3 Page 3 THE BACK PAGE We all have learned, over the years, to be very, very careful on the journey from the Bay area to Jacksonville or other north Florida locations. Highway 301 is notorious as a route where speeding tickets are easy to come by. So, just to give you a little perspective. On the left - a photo of the kind of vehicle you would hope the Highway Patrol is using. On the right - a photo of the kind of vehicle they are ACTUALLY using. Enough said? Bob Mitchell (who must know more songs than any other Herald in the world) celebrates 19 years as a Barbershop Harmony Society member. (We think he must have joined back when he had hair!) GROAN OF THE WEEK Jimmy: 'Hey, Mike! How's your new pet fish doing? You told me he was really something special.' Mike: 'To tell the truth, I'm really disappointed in him. The guy who sold him to me said I could teach him to sing like a bird.' Jimmy: 'What? Let me get this straight... You bought a fish because you thought you could teach him to sing like a bird?' Mike: 'Well, yeah. After all, you know, he's a parrot fish.' Jimmy: 'Now listen, Mike, while you might be able to teach a parrot to sing, you'll never get anywhere with a parrot fish.' Mike: 'That's what you think! It just so happens this fish CAN sing. The thing is, he's terribly off-key and it's driving me crazy. Do you know how hard it is to tuna fish?' HERALDS THANKS definitely go out to Jeff Lathom for stepping in at the last minute to lead our weekly rehearsal on Tuesday, April 17 due to illness of our director, Bill Billings. (At least that s the story the riser guys were given. Word on the street is that Billings was taking a nap on the beach somewhere. We ll probably never know for sure!) Anyway Thanks, Jeff, for helping us out in our time of need!

Seats are $15 and may be ordered at The Savannah Theater seats 800+ people and the box office expects 2 sold-out performances. General info about the benefit is available by calling (352) Just what IS barbershop? Here s the introduction to a great information piece found on the BHS website. Read the rest of it here: documents/pages/pub_id_ hcsp TUTORIAL ONE: What is Barbershop Harmony? The Barbershop Harmony Society is devoted to promoting, preserving, and enjoying a special form of harmony known as barbershop. But what makes a particular song or arrangement "barbershop-able"? What's the difference between barbershop and doo-wop, jazz, madrigal, and other a cappella music? Technically speaking, barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied singing with three voices harmonizing to the melody. The lead usually sings the melody, with the tenor harmonizing above the lead. The bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes and the baritone provides in-between notes, either above or below the lead to make chords (specifically, dominant-type or "barbershop" sevenths) that give barbershop its distinctive, "full" sound. Probably the most distinctive facet of barbershop harmony is the phenomenon known as expanded sound. It is created when the harmonics in the individually sung tones reinforce each other to produce audible overtones or undertones. Barbershoppers call this "ringing a chord." Singing in a quartet or chorus and creating that "fifth voice" is one of the most thrilling musical sensations you'll ever experience, leading to goose bumps the size of golf balls.

16 Page 3 District Convention info for May 4-5, 2007 There are lots of great things in store for all barbershoppers who will be attending the annual Spring convention of the Sunshine District. The Tampa Chapter will be represented by three quartets in the Friday quartet semi-finals: Saturday Night (singing 4th with Pat Bauer on bass) Getaway (singing 8th with Paul Carter on tenor, Terry Tripp, bari; Scott Tripp, lead; and newly re-joined Herald Brian Henderlong, bass) Last Call (with Mark Schlinkert, lead; Byron Poore, tenor; Jerry Johnson, bass; and Bill Billings, bari.) Please note that the contest sessions start at 6:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights. (That's earlier than in previous years). Heralds Steve Matheson has arranged a full-page ad in the program detailing Encore '07 The Road To Denver. If you would like to view a preview copy of the convention program, follow this link: conventions/2007springconventionprogram-rev1.pdf And in addition to the Sunshine District convention, there will be a very big community event also underway (Sail Jacksonville). This means the downtown crowds will be likely be larger than normal. SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR HERALDS HOH, in preparation for singing in the Trophy performance on May 5, will have a rehearsal Saturday morning of the convention weekend. Every Herald should plan on being in Jax no later than 9:30 and ready to move into the warm-up room at 10am. If you are only coming for the day, and do not plan on going into the contest except when HoH sings, you do NOT need a ticket. However, if you want to enter the auditorium for any part of the contest, you will need at least an event ticket or a convention registration. If any Herald who wants to sing in the Joe Barbershop Mic Tester chorus that Bill Billings will be directing, needs to be available by 9am for that warm-up/rehearsal.
