The Heralds of Harmony appeared on Tampa s FOX 13 s Good Day Tampa Bay show at 8AM on Tuesday. The space was pretty tight with less than half of the HoH performing chorus could fitting into the studio. But director Bill Billings and the guys did a great job in bringing some musical holiday cheer to the huge viewing audience. And, of course, it also provided them the ideal opportunity to let all of Tampa Bay know about the big Christmas shows coming on December 13 at the Performing Arts Center. If you missed the guys on TV, you can catch a short clip of some of their music on channel 13 s website. Just click the link below. Detail?contentId= &version=1&locale=EN- US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=5.2.1 AND we got this note following the show: Sitting in my car dealer waiting for $500 in repairs when up pops the Tampa chorus on TV channel 13. Saw the entire show and the chorus sounded great. Those sitting in the waiting room had no idea how big Tampa's chorus is so they just recognized some good singing. In addition, the faces looked great on the small tube. Give the members who participated my regards and thanks for a great barbershop performance. - Mike Miller, Sarasota Chapter At our Recent Rehearsal. New friends with us were overwhelmed by the Show...will be ticket purchase folks for next H of H Show. Once again..many thanks! - Bob & Shirley Prue PAGLIARA CHARITABLE FOUNDATION 2010 April Spring Contest/Convention in The Heralds bid farewell to Fred Bjork Several members from the chorus participated in a small service for Fred at the Bjork home. His wife, Deane, was grateful to have the house full of friends and relatives plus lots of food. HoH s John Pennington made a few short remarks and shared a couple of scriptures. And, Heralds Roger McLaughlin, Kent Jenkins, John Pennington, Marty Vandenberghe, Lou Wurmnest, Bill Phipps, Dick Sipple, and Lynn Hineman honored Fred s memory as they sang a couple of songs. Several of the Heralds Angels were also there. And, the group was joined by Sunshine District Past President and Tenor Dan Brinkmann who entered into some additional singing after the brief memorial service. Fred, you will be dearly missed!

10 Page 3 Well, the Heralds had another successful Christmas show! That was my second -- from the stage. My very first Heralds show, which I saw from the spectator side, was also a Christmas show, in I went as a favor to Dianne, my mother-in-law, who was dating some guy that sang in a "Barbershop chorus", whatever that was, and wanted us to see his show. I'd never heard of the barbershop style at that time, and didn't really understand what it meant; I think I thought it actually had something to do with hair! But anyway, I was willing to go, but not, you know, chomping at the bit. If I liked it, great. If not, well, it was only one evening. Well, I thought they put on a great show. I read the insert in the program, the one about "come to our rehearsal and we promise you'll be singing on the risers by the end of the evening!", and I read it a couple more times, and I asked Roxanne, "Would you think I was crazy if I said I wanted to go to their rehearsal?" She said something on the order of "No, not at all", as near as I can recall, and Dianne and Dave (the guy Dianne was dating in the chorus) picked us up the next Tuesday. So there I was, and everyone was very friendly. One of them, Joe, led me through a couple of bars of music before rehearsal even began, and seemed impressed (or at least pleased :) that I could sing back to him the notes he sang to me. Little did I know that "singing tags" is a long and cherished tradition in Barbershopping, and I'd just sung my first. So anyway, it was their first rehearsal since the show, and it's more-or-less traditional to dissect the most recent show, good and bad. They talked about various things that'd happened at the show, recounted comments from patrons, and so forth, and then the director, Bill, said something like "Well, are you ready to sing a little?" In the program, where they said "by the end of the evening you'll be on the risers!", I kind of assumed that there'd be some audition process or something. After all, "by the end" implies "not at the beginning"! Nope. "Are you ready to sing a little?" and up we all trucked to the stage where the risers were waiting. There were a couple of us visitors, and they had us introduce ourselves, describe how we came to be at the rehearsal ('cause of the show -- duh!), and then they sang us a short welcome song. Then, to my surprise, they gave us some music and intermingled us in the chorus immediately. Not knowing anything about singing, and thus not knowing what part I sang (I was pretty sure I wasn't a bass, but that was about as far as I'd go), they told me to sing "lead", showed me which part of the music that was, and put me in front of the Lead section leader, so that I could *hear* what to sing as well as see it on the music, if that would help. Bill led us through a warm-up, and quickly surprised me again by *not* pointing at me (or any other visitor, or anyone else) and critiquing my singing. He'd always wave vaguely at some part of the chorus and say something like "more air", or "you're a little on the under-side of that note", or whatever. We sang through some, or maybe all, of the Christmas songs, and Bill never threw anything at me, so I was happy. :) I gotta tell you, I pretty much expected the Heralds to say "Thank you so much for coming! Please never come back!" I've never done any real singing. Now, my parents had sung in the church choir my whole life, and two sisters and a brother had been in chorus in high school, but I was the "black sheep" of the family in that respect: a couple of years of piano when I was a kid, band 6th-10th grade, but no chorus for me. I'd done Children's Choir when I was six, and maybe six months of private guitar and voice lessons in my late twenties, but that was it. So I really didn't expect the warm welcome I received, not from the people that put on the show I'd just seen! But get a warm welcome I did, and I had a good time, and I really did get to stand on the risers and "ring a barbershop chord" (before I even knew what that meant!), and the rest is history. So I'd like to invite all of you to the next Heralds of Harmony rehearsal, this Tuesday at 7pm at the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge, located at 5500 Memorial Blvd. If you like to sing, or *think* you *might* like to *learn* to sing (I was pretty much in this second camp!), give us a try. I've had a great time. :) - HoH Lead, Larry Clapp
