Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today s Bible Truth. Before kids arrive, take a few moments to pray for them. Pray that kids would walk away from today with tangible ways to practice patience when it s hard. Pray that kids would understand that God wants to help them and wants to hear from them when they re struggling. Ask God to help kids understand that His answers might not always look like what they expect, but that He s present with them nonetheless. 9:00 & 11:30 What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Play What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? Choose a volunteer to be Mr. (or Miss) Fox. Guide the other kids to line up at one end of your environment while Mr. Fox stands at the other end with his back to the group. At your signal, the group calls out, What time is it, Mr. Fox? If Mr. Fox answers a time that is an even hour (5:00, 10:00, 1:00, etc.), everyone takes that many steps forward. The players may take any size step they choose. If Mr. Fox answers, It s time to chase you! he turns around and chases the other players back to the start line. Anyone he catches sits out. Guide kids to move different ways for each round: baby step, kangaroo hop, tiger crawl (on hands and feet with hips low), etc. What You Say: Have you ever had to wait a long time for something? What was it? Was it hard to wait? What did you do while you waited? [Transition] In our Bible Truth today, we ll hear about a woman who had to wait a looong time for something she really wanted. What You Say: Waiting for something that is fun, exciting, or that you really really want can be hard sometimes. If you re excited about having an awesome time together, look at your neighbor and say, It s about to get crazy up in here. HOST and KIDS: It s about to get crazy up in here. HOST: Today s crazy.fun starts with the Power Praise team leading us in praise and worship. Help me welcome them now. Let s check out our Life App for this month. It s a tricky one, I m telling you. I ll be the first to tell you that this Life App, well, it s a little hard for some people. It s hard for ME sometimes! Let s read it together. CG: Patience Slide 5

6 HOST and KIDS: Patience is waiting until later for what you want now. HOST: Try it again! HOST and KIDS: Patience is waiting until later for what you want now. HOST: Waiting until LATER for something you want NOW? That doesn t sound fun, does it? Nooooo! But patience is important, because some things are worth the wait. Here to tell us just how important Patients is, is [Historyteller s Name] SETTING UP THE BIBLE TRUTH HISTORYTELLER: Hey, hey, hey, everyone! Historyteller enters. Host sets up the baby doll in the bassinette/crib by the FINISH line and then exits. Pick up the Bible and walk to the START line. You know what I love about the Bible? Well, I love a lot of things about it, but one thing I REALLY love is that we can read stories about some of the bravest, strongest, most amazing people ever! And we get to talk about one of those people today. Her name was Hannah. And Hannah was pretty awesome. In fact, she was really awesome. She showed so much patience CRAZY amounts of patience! We can read about Hannah and her husband in the book of 1 Samuel. (Hold up Bible.) When we meet Hannah, things weren t going so well for her. HANNAH IS TEASED Place one cone on the ground and take a step toward the finish line. In fact, Hannah was being teased. Do you know what it means to be teased? It s when someone makes fun of you or says things that hurt your feelings. Raise your hand if you ve ever been teased before. (Raise your hand.) I ve been teased before, too. And it doesn t feel very good, does it? Well, it didn t feel very good to Hannah, either. The woman who was teasing Hannah was named Peninnah. Here s why she did it. Listen to this. Open the Bible to 1 Samuel 1:6-7 and read. Peninnah teased Hannah to make her angry. She did it because the LORD had kept Hannah from having children. Peninnah teased Hannah year after year (NIrV). Isn t that just SO mean? Peninnah made fun of Hannah because Hannah and her husband hadn t been able to have a baby together. Place one cone on the ground and take a step toward the 6

7 FINISH line. And Hannah WANTED a baby. She wanted a baby so, so badly. She wanted a baby so badly that sometimes she wouldn t eat for a long time because she was so sad. She would cry and cry and cry. HANNAH PRAYS AND ELI SEES HISTORYTELLER: But Hannah had hope. She had hope that God would one day give her a son. So she prayed. One day, Hannah prayed to God. Listen to what she said. Open the Bible to 1 Samuel 1:11 and read. LORD, you rule over all. Please see how I m suffering!... Please give me a son! (NIrV). Hannah told God that if He gave her a son, she would make sure the boy grew up hearing about and loving God. Place one cone on the ground and take a step toward the FINISH line. Hannah wasn t alone when she prayed this prayer. There was a priest a man who worked in God s house where Hannah was praying. His name was Eli. And Eli saw Hannah praying. Hannah was praying so hard that Eli thought something might be wrong with her. He went over to her and asked her what was going on. I was telling the LORD all my troubles, she told him (1 Samuel 1:15 NIrV). Place one cone on the ground and take a step toward the FINISH line. She continued: I ve been praying here because I m very sad. My pain is so great (1 Samuel 1:16 NIrV). Place one cone on the ground and take a step toward the FINISH line. HANNAH HAS A BABY HISTORYTELLER: Eli looked at Hannah, and he saw her patience. He saw how much she wanted what she was praying for. So he said, Go in peace. May God give you what you asked for (1 Samuel 1:17 paraphrase). Then... guess what happened. Guess! Place the last cone on the ground and cross the FINISH line. Pick up the baby doll (with the blanket) from the crib. Hannah had a baby. She did! She had a baby boy named Samuel. And just like she promised, she 7

8 raised Samuel to know and love God. WRAPPING UP THE BIBLE TRUTH Walk back to the START line. HISTORYTELLER: Look at all these cones. Walk from the START to the FINISH line while talking. Each of these cones represents PATIENCE. They represent a time Hannah had to wait on what she wanted. She had to wait a long, long, long, long, LONG time. But she still talked to God. She knew that she didn t have to wait alone. She knew she could tell God how she was feeling, and she knew that He would care. Our Bottom Line today says this. CG: Bottom Line Slide [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. Can you say that with me? KIDS and HISTORYTELLER: [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. HISTORYTELLER: Hannah knew that she could trust God through all the waiting. You and I can do that too. We can trust God while we re waiting for something we really want. [Basic Truth] We can trust God no matter what! We know we can always talk to Him, and He ll be there to help us. Let s pray. Pray HISTORYTELLER: God, thank You for the gift of prayer. Thank You that we can talk to You about anything, anytime, anywhere we are. You hear us, and You love us. Please help us to be like Hannah. Please help us to talk to You when things are good, when things aren t so good, and in those times when we need patience. We love You, and we ask these things in Jesus name, amen. If you have an offering with you today, raise your hand and we will bring the bucket over to you. Historyteller exits as Host enters. Closer HOST: Raise your hand if you ve ever really, really, really wanted something. Maybe you even prayed for it. (Raise your hand.) I ve really, really wanted something, too. Not knowing whether or not it will happen can make your stomach feel kind of yucky. It can make you sad or scared. And that s exactly how Hannah felt. She wanted a baby more than anything! But she was patient even when it was hard and she was so, so sad. She found a way to be patient even when others were making fun of her. She decided to talk to God about it. She didn t give up. Hannah showed patience, because she knew some things are worth the wait. 8

9 Now, I want to ask you a serious question. In today s Bible Truth, Hannah got what she wanted, right? She got a son. What happens when we DON T get what we want? What happens when our grandma stays sick? When our parents do get divorced? When there isn t enough money? When we can t find any friends? What do we do then? We talk to God. That s what He wants us to do continue to talk to Him and trust that He loves us and that He is taking care of us. Here s the one thing we need to remember today. Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (10 minutes) Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible Truth applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions. 9:00 & 11:30 Baby, Baby What You Need: Swaddled and dressed baby doll (1 per small group), lullaby music What You Do: Guide kids to sit in a circle. Ask prompting questions to briefly review the Bible Truth. Remind kids of today s Bottom Line: [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it, and guide them to repeat it after you a few times. Start the music and give a child the doll. Guide him to take off the blanket and pass the doll to the child beside him. Then the baby gets passed to the next kid, who re-swaddles the baby. The kids continue passing the baby as the music plays. At various times, stop the music. Prompt the child holding the doll to say the Bottom Line: [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. NOTE: If a child is shy or reluctant, don t force him to say the Bottom Line. Instead, invite him to either whisper it in your ear or choose another child to say it for him. What You Say: You guys did a great job patiently swaddling the baby and patiently waiting. In our Bible Truth today, Hannah waited a long time for a baby, didn t she? She waited so long that she became very sad. Sometimes when we re waiting for something, all we can do is think about the thing we re waiting for! [Make It Personal] I remember when I was a kid, I really wanted [insert something that you waited for as a kid, such as a pet, a responsibility, a sibling, etc.] You might feel like there s nothing you can do except to wait. But it helps to talk to someone about how hard it is to wait. [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. 10

11 10:15 Wait! Wait! (Do) Tell Me! What You Need: Story Pictures and Hannah s Story Activity Pages What You Do: Show kids the Story Pictures and invite them to identify each person. Set the pictures in a large circle and guide kids to stand around the outside of the circle. Read Hannah s Story, directing kids to move around the outside of the circle and stand by each person s picture whenever they hear you say that person s name. Guide kids to do a motion for each person when they stand by their picture: o Hannah: pantomime brushing long hair o Eli: place hand over heart o Baby: pantomime rocking a baby o Samuel: stand on knees What You Say: Hannah knew that God was the only One who could help her wait for the baby she wanted so much. Maybe you re having a hard time waiting for something. Maybe you re waiting for your dad to get a job, for your mom to get well, for your family to get a pet, or for your brother or sister to be nice to you more often. Maybe you re sad or mad about having to wait. It s okay. God loves you, so tell Him how you feel. He can help you feel better, and He can help you be patient. So no matter what you re waiting for, remember: [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. He loves you! All Service Times Pray and Dismiss (10 minutes) [Pray to God Prayer Activity] Made to Reflect: an activity that creates space for personal understanding and application What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Guide kids to sit silently and think of something that they re waiting for. It might be a pet, learning how to read, for their mom or dad to get a job, for someone to get well, or for someone to know Jesus. Lead kids in prayer, asking God to help the kids trust Him while they wait. What You Say: Dear God, thank You that You always listen to us. Thank You that You want us to talk to You when we are sad, mad, or upset about waiting. Thank You that You want us to tell You how we feel because You love us and want to help us. Please help us remember to talk to You when we re having a hard time being patient. Help us remember that we can always trust You while we wait. We love You, God. Amen. As adults arrive to pick up, guide kids to tell their parents today s Bottom Line: [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. 11
