1 A monthly publication of the Tampa Chapter, Barbershop Harmony Society Monthly E-Newsletter January HAPPY NEW YEAR! The busy hustle and bustle of the holidays is behind us. Thank you to all of you who were a part of our Christmas shows, whether it be as a participant or as a patron. Your support is appreciated more than we can express. So, did you miss us? It s okay to admit it. So much has happened since our last HERALD. Three Christmas shows, installation of our 2011 officers, Leadership Academy, and the departure of a dear friend and a great Herald. Brad Grabill, newsletter Editor extraordinaire, has packed his bags and will be taking some time off to pursue other interests for a while. Thank you Brad for being such a wonderful editor of The HERALD for so many years. You will be dearly missed! So, with that, the Heralds have plucked out the least suspecting individual from the chorus to help with this task. In fact, that person isn t even IN the chorus!! Her husband is though, and she is often seen at rehearsal each week. Our newest member of the publishing staff is Roxanne Clapp, wife of Lead and Secretary, Larry Clapp. The HERALD will be published monthly instead of weekly but will continue to carry the content you long for each issue. Watch for it mid-month, every month. It s time to start thinking about Valentine s Day. Order your Singing Valentine soon. 9 The Tampa HERALD Page 3 January 2011 G roupanizer The Heralds of Harmony has moved its online presence for chorus administration and members only activities to Groupanizer and will be gradually moving to Groupanizer for its public presence as well so you may see some subtle changes along the way. The New HoH (Groupanizer) Web Site The new web site is beginning to be used more as we continue to get familiar with its many new functions. The Member Attendance Function is one that is and will become very important to the Chorus Leadership Team. Please tell us when you plan to attend. It is very simple after logging on to the site, you will see My Attendance Plan on the left side of your Dashboard screen. Click on this and it will display a number of chorus events. Click the edit button beside an event and it will give you a pull down tab that contains the options, i.e. Will Attend, Might Attend, and Won t Attend. Select the one that is appropriate. You will also see an area for a short note. When I missed a rehearsal a couple weeks ago, I entered, On a Cruise. But, that is optional. Remember the old sign-up sheets? They will be no longer necessary. Thank you for updating your plan for attendance. As an aside, we are adding our Chapter History to this site. If you are a historybuff, then you are going to have some fun. From your Dashboard screen, click on the Documents tab at the top right of the screen. This provides an index of HoH Documents. Click on Historical Documents and you will see a list of Historical Documents listed by year. For an example, click on 1944 Documents. You will see a letter (.pdf) from the International Executive Secretary, Carroll Adams that was sent to Bob Aldrich, dated November 9, 1944, discussing Bob s interest in starting barbershop singing in Tampa. I hope you enjoy it. The Historical Documents Section is a work in process so new items will be added as time permits. Dave Roberts HoH Web Administration and Chapter Historian RainOut A few ways the guys coped with having the night off... It rained so hard on January 25th that rehearsal was CANCELLED. How often does that happen?! Thankfully, there were no reports of damage or casualties among the Heralds Nation. Hid in the closet and sang the Irish Blessing, Limbered up for choreo by dodging raindrops, and my personal favorite, Rehearsed Anyway! Heralds of Harmony History CORNER The Tampa Chapter was chartered in 1945 and was the first Chapter in the state of Florida.

14 The Tampa HERALD Page 3 March 2011 This year 60 Singing Valentines were delivered to surprised and unsuspecting ladies and gentlemen all over the Tampa Bay area thanks to the following five quartets and the excellent organization of Randy Lawson. Memory Makers Randy Lawson Ralph Kleinlein Dan Deignan Ray Scalise TB4 Russ Powell Alex Boltenko Roger McLaughlin Chris Overstreet Special Arrangement Brad Grabill Ed McKenzie Dave Roberts Marty Port Flex Flour Steve Matheson Chuck Steiner Marty Vandenberghe Dan Mcfarlane Travelers 4 Larry Clapp Bill Phipps Chris Barthauer John Santamaria TB4 won the travel award for taking Sunday deliveries as well as their Monday lot. Rumor has it they have a story to tell about their Church Delivery. Ask them about it! The night before Valentine s Day, the Heralds received a little air time on Channel 8 News and again the morning and evening of Valentine s Day on Channel 10 News. Some of the Heralds put on their salesman hat for this event. Thanks to Doug McDonald, John Santamaria, Ed McKenzie, Russ Powell, Marty Port, Lynn Hineman, Gregg Hunsberger, Bill Phipps, Ray Scalise, Brad Grabill, Steve Matheson, and Steve Stenzler for helping make this day such a success. We need more quartets to participate next year so we can deliver all the Singing Valentines our fans care to order. Get started now in setting up your quartet for next year. If necessary, recruit a new member for your quartet to fill the gap of that missing part. Heck, recruit a new member anyway!
15 The Tampa HERALD Page 4 March 2011 Terrific Fantastic Teil Rey Direction Changing Awesome Outstanding Fantabulous! Fabulous Working with Teil is wonderful; she is able to simultaneously command attention, be playful, and attend to every detail. John Santamaria These were just some of the words used to describe Teil Rey and the overall experience of being coached by her. Teil is a professional choreographer and friend of the Santamaria family (lucky for us!). President John Santamaria with Teil Rey after choreo coaching. As Vice President of Chapter Development, Ed McKenzie, put it I had my eyes opened this week when she worked with us....she proceeded to address each and every shortcoming with a quick fix and move on to the next one... and, she did it with a constant smile, encouragement, and the obvious expectation that we can do it better. She was very exacting and very positive. Terrific Teil and Super Steve are just the dynamic duo we need. Ed McKenzie Caught on camera What?! You want me to sing baritone?! Words put in to Lead Andrew Wheeler s mouth. Assistant Director Brian Weber has been teaching us to avoid the stalker face.
16 The Tampa HERALD Page 5 January 2011 G roupanizer Update Tip of the month... S Your Profile in the Groupanizer Web Site The web site contains many features but one of the most important is your profile. Remember when we had to cancel our rehearsal on January 25 due the weather? It would have made it much easier if all the phone numbers were current. For you old timers, remember the days of phone lists and the frustration of keeping them current? We have the opportunity to get this done by doing the following: After Logging On which brings up your Dashboard, click on My Account (top item on left side list). This is your profile which you can update by clicking on Edit. At this point, you can change your Internet ID, your password to this site, etc. Click on Profile, and you can update and share whatever information that you wish. Thank you for doing this. Update your Attendance Plan This function is becoming very important to the Musical Leadership. The Team plans what will be worked on for each upcoming rehearsal. Letting the Music Team know of your planned participation is invaluable. It is very simple. From your Dashboard, click on My Attendance Plan. For each rehearsal or event, click on the Edit square. This gives you the opportunity to let the team know your plans. There is even a note area for whatever you want to say i.e. work, vacation, and etc. Again, thank you for keeping your attendance plan updated. 18 The Tampa HERALD Page 7 March 2011 The Back Page Puns for Educated Mind The fattest knight at King Arthur s round table was Sir Cumference. He acquired his size from too much pi. I thought I saw an eye doctor on an Alaskan island, but it turned out to be an optical Aleutian. No matter how much you push the envelope, it ll still be stationery. Two silk worms had a race.
