Bill is stepping down to appropriately dedicate significant time and energy to the care of his dear mother during these days of fragile health. Bill has served for the past four years as our front-line guy and has never wavered in demonstrating a commitment to musical excellence, organization and a warm sprit of brotherhood for the Heralds. Few people can match the level of loyalty and longevity that Bill Billings has displayed in the ranks of HoH. Bill assures us that he ll still be around as his life permits and will continue to make whatever contribution that s possible to make the Heralds all that we can be. Thank you, Bill, for all you mean to us! Our Assistant Director, Byron Poore, is currently serving as Acting Director of the Heralds. A Board-authorized committee is pursuing an Interim-Director agreement (now thru year end) with Steve Jamison, who could begin directing Heralds rehearsals on August 25. Recently seen at HoH... 4 The Tampa Bay Heralds of Harmony are having a Special Guest and Alumni Night, on Tuesday, August 18 at 7 PM, at our rehearsal theater in the Scottish Rite Masonic Hall, 5500 Memorial Drive in Tampa, FL. (See map link at bottom of this page.) If you are interested in singing (and hearing) barbershop at the highest levels, we'd like for YOU to be there with us. It's going to be a wonderful evening of chorus music, quartetting, tag singing, and refreshments! We'll have short performances from 2 choruses - the Heralds, and the Winter Park Sunshine Jubilee Chorus - along with five quartets, including Crosstown Express, and international BHS competitors Harmonious Hunks. There will be ample time for meeting old and new friends, and for impromptu quartetting and tagging, both at break and during the afterglow refreshments. The Heralds will ALSO be introducing our NEW Interim Musical Director - Steve Jamison, esteemed coach and long-time music category judge, who is also now serving as Chairman of the BHS Contest & Judging Program. Under Steve's directorship, and with the capable leadership of Assistant Directors Byron Poore and singing category judge David Mills, and with coaching input from presentation category judge Mark Schlinkert, and Director Emeritus Bill Billings, the Heralds are looking forward with great anticipation to a new and even more exciting chapter in their storied history as Florida's premier Barbershop Chorus. The Heralds have a great new package for Sunshine District International Preliminary Chorus Competition in October. There are other changes afoot that will make the chapter and chorus an extremely enjoyable experience for all committed singers, and we'd like even more good vocalists to join us on the risers - whether Alumni, or new Heralds. So, there will be the opportunity, but no pressure, to join us. There will also be lots of fun, a chance to sing and to mingle a bit, and for our Alumni, a chance to get acquainted with the new musical leadership team of the Heralds. And if what you see and hear on August 18 entices you to return on future Tuesdays, then so much the better! Regardless, we'll all have a very good time on August 18. So please join us! We hope to see you there. Any questions? Please ask Membership VP Bryan Hevel, at Come and find out why we always say. IT S GREAT TO BE A HERALD! The great folks there have agreed to donate back to HoH 10% of all we spend there each week. So don t miss out on the fun AND the big payback to the chorus. See you there next week! Outside countless barbershops across America, signs that read "Four chairs, no waiting" have encouraged customers to enter, take a chair, and participate in a collective ritual of American male adulthood. Similarly, the four parts of barbershop harmony have come to represent American musical camaraderie, set in a utopian Main Street of Long Ago, USA. Four Parts, No Waiting explores the role that vernacular, barbershop-style close harmony has played in American musical history, American life, and the American imagination. In his research into barbershop harmony, Gage Averill has uncovered both a rich musical tradition--a hybrid of African American and European cultural forms--and an integral feature of the mythologized vision of small-town American life. The accompanying audio CD both illustrates the evolution of barbershop singing over the last two centuries and provides examples of the hallmark sounds and structures of this unique musical form. With intelligence and humor, Averill offers a thorough exploration of barbershop's evolution through American culture and an analysis of the myths that have surrounded the musical form. He also uncovers a vibrant tradition of civicmindedness, community participation, and camaraderie--all of which feed the passion for barbershop singing that characterizes so many of its devotees to this day. April Spring Contest/Convention in While we re speaking of celebrities & notable entertainers These four Heralds (Ed McKenzie, Steve Matheson, Marty Vandenberghe, and John Santamaria) are currently filling the roles of the infamous School Board for a local production of the THE MUSIC MAN. As we all know, it s every barbershoppers dream to be in the music man. And if you can t play the librarian, the next best thing is to be in the show s quartet. Reviews are raving about these guys. They re doing our chapter and our wonderful hobby proud. The production is by the New Tampa Players. Here s a link to the theater group s website: On the first day of the International quartet contest out in Anaheim, The Harmonious Hunks happened upon a very impressive star sighting. Bryon Poore bumped into a very tall Conan O brien (the newly installed host of NBC s Tonight Show ) in the hotel lobby. O brien, having astutely deduced that the flashy suit meant that Byron was probably some sort of barbershopper... coaxed him to go get the rest of his quartet. The Hunks had several minutes to chat up Conan, sang for him, and even got him to sing along a bit with them. There was a filming crew in tow, but we still don t know if the interview and singing will ever make it onto the late night airwaves. We can only hope!

Tags were taught and sung, many quartets performed, musical craft was imparted, old friends showed up, and new friends came for the first time.
