2 From the President The July meeting was certainly alive with what magic is all about. I was in New York and missed what has been described as one of the most enjoyable meetings of the year. What was very amazing is just how much magic rests in the abilities of our own very gifted and talented magicians. From Ed Kaczmarek's class on basic miracle airplane fuselage design to all of the member-produced miracles, the evening was, in my mind, a signal to turn more toward the talents of our own Ring 81 membership going forward. It is easy to say someone is a professional, thus that magician must be better able to produce miracles. In fact, it really means only that one earns money to produce miracles. In any case, congratulations to Al Loeffler for his organizing skills, to all who performed, and most especially to all of you who so enthusiastically came together to enjoy the evening. Bob Banta It s time to start practicing your magic routine for the September Members Contest. This event is not meant to see who is the best, but to implore our members to demonstrate their love of magic in any method they choose. Cards, Coins, Silks, Ropes, etc all are part of our arsenal of this art form. Where better to perform but in an atmosphere of camaraderie and brotherhood. August 5th: Trevor Duffy Sept. 2nd: Member Contest (see P4) Oct. 7th: Windy & Sunny Doughton Stevie Dee Parties, Conventions, Graduations. You name it, He does it. 4 JULY 1st "MEMBERS PERFORMANCE NIGHT" REPORT Anybody who missed our July 1 st meeting missed an evening of great performances, lots of fun, and an outstanding "Airplane" workshop by Ed Kaczmarek. The theme of our July 1 st meeting was MEMBER PERFORMANCE NIGHT. It was a smash success, highly entertaining, and so much fun. Ten of our members performed a variety of baffling magical effects. Silks, ropes, cylinders, load boxes, paper cones, mystic Asian bags, chop cups, mental magic, and wonder of wonders only one card trick. How's that for variety. The ten participants who performed all of those magical wonders for our entertainment were: Windy Doughton, Steve Gottschalk, Ed Kaczmarek, Michael Kent, Wes Meltzer, David Pitchford, Jose Reyes, Steve Sims, Bill Smith, John Tietjen. Windy and Sunny Doughton who have performed magic shows for more than 30 years - - drove all the way from Seminole to participate, and later sent the following comments of appreciation. "Last night was very interesting and shows that you have some very talented members in Ring 81. We were happy to perform with them. A night like that makes our trip of 132 miles worth it. ---WINDY" About thirty of our members attended. It was nice that several wives came, also, to cheer their spouses in performance. It would have been even better if more of our members were present to applaud the performers. The International Brotherhood of Magicians is just that: a Brotherhood. Membership in a Brotherhood carries certain responsibilities. Most important is to attend meetings. Another is to support, encourage and appreciate member performances Al Loeffler, Program Manager MAGIC CONTEST 2010 ~ September 2, 2010 ~ ANNOUNCEMENT RING 81 MAGIC CONTEST ~ SEPTEMBER 2, 2010 ~ ENTER NOW We're happy to announce this very exciting Ring 81 event a Magic Contest. 5 Trick of the Month. OUTS This is a physiological presentation that has been around for many years and used in different forms. The presentation: The spectators are conditioned to the fact that this is not a trick but rather an experiment. They are told that at times that you have the ability to predict what someone is about to do. Three cards are taken from a card box and placed on the table, faces up and the box is placed aside. For our example we ll use the KH, QH and the JH. The spectator is asked to place the box on any one of the cards. Once done, they are asked if they want to change their mind. In this example they chose the JH. You proclaim that you had a hunch that this was the card they were going to select. You show the backs of the KH and the QH revealing ordinary backs. Showing the back of the Jack of Hearts reveals a large X drawn on the back. Setup: Prepare the JH with an X on the back. On the back of the card box write, I knew that you would pick the QH. On a slip of paper write, I knew you would pick the KH and place this in the card box. If they pick the JH proceed as above. If they choose the QH reveal what is hidden on the back of the card box. If they choose the KH open the card box and reveal the note therein. This type of routine has been performed with poker chips and many other items always giving the performer an OUT.
