General meeting and presentation 7:00 pm. Visit our Web Site at Michael Dardant Magic Mike, New Orleans resident originally from New Iberia, LA has been a professional magician since he was thirteen years old, and has recently begun competing at magic competitions, ultimately preparing for the World Championship, considered the Olympics of Magic, which occurs in a different country every three years; F>I>S>M>, Federation International des Societes Magiques 2012 has been a great year, landing Michael 13 championship awards! In May, he took first place in both categories of Stage and Close up Magic in Canada s National Magic Convention (C.A.M.) This occurred a week after having the honor of performing for a conference in New York that for over 40nyears has been called Fechtor s Finger Flicking Frolic > Each year only 200 of the worlds best lose Up artists are invited. In July, he became an International Champion, winning 1st place in Close Up and the Peoples Choice Award, at the International Brotherhood of Magic Convention (I.B.M.) in Norfolk, VA. He has already been booked as Close Up magician for the 2013 IBM Convention in Phoenix. Most recently, Mike traveled to Miami and took 1st place in Close Up Magic at the Magic on the Beach Convention, Then on August 2nd he took his skills and his zany assistant, Kitty Kaos, to Seattle Washington for one of the oldest and most prestigious magic gatherings known as P.C.A.M. The Pacific Coast association of Magic. His Close Up act, once again, took a 1st place medal. It was the dynamic duo of Michael and New Orleans comedian and variety performer, Mandi Turner, Kitty Kaos that blew everyone away with an 8 minute comedy magic stage act. The won not only the hearts of the crowd, but several awards as well. Disclaimer: Since Michael was a late addition to this meeting the above facts may not be up to date but are factual. 2 From the President PREZ-TIDIGITATION With the New Year upon us, and the compulsion (by many magi) to make a resolution, here is a suggested list for you all, whether one be an amateur, semipro or pro. For 2014 I hereby resolve to: 1.PRACTICE MORE: 2. Pull some of that "old stuff" out of the closet and take a fresh look at it; 3. Attend Ring meetings with more frequency; 4. Volunteer to perform at Ring meetings...whatever the program for the evening, anyone can perform before or after the scheduled event; 5.PRACTISE MORE 6.Do a bit more reading of magic publications; 7.Do some shows for charitable groups. 8. Perform at one of the Ring's public outings like at the annual Chalk Festival, Shark Festival, Veteran's Day, and other such events that occur throughout the year; 9.Learn a new card trick or sleight (even if you hate card tricks)...attend the early (6:00 PM) instruction session prior to the Ring meetings & the Tuesday Night Gatherings at Applebees; Continued on page 3 January 2nd February 6th March April 3rd Michael Dardante Lecture Flea Market Picnic Jay Sankey Stevie Dee Parties, Conventions, Graduations. 3 Trick of the Month. Instead a Trick of the Month we fill it s important to feature a Trickster of the month. The following article appeared in the Herald Tribune on December 17, Space does not allow the entire article to be included here. Prestidigitation in Venice Glenn Gary moved to Venice recently after headlining the longest running magic show in Washington DC. One of his first activities was to join Ring 81. Since then he has opened The Cabaret of Magic Interactive Theater on Miami Ave. in Venice.,. a business which is part retail and part theater. The retail part features magic paraphernalia including juggling equipment, books and VDs. In the back behind a velvet curtain Gary performs magic on Tuesdays through Saturday. According to reports, the reaction as been phenomenal. Everyone seems to be exited that we are here. GO SEE THE SHOW. Continued from page PRACTICE MORE 11. Do a kid show (even if you hate doing kid shows...that's how we get some young child interested in magic. 12.Learn a new coin sleight (even if you hate coin sleights). 13. See a magician when shows come to town or when one of our own is performing at a local venue. 14. PRACTICE MORE 15. Patronize our local "brick & mortar" magic shops in Bradenton (Jonti) & Venice (Glenn Gary). 16. Buy a trick...online...at our annual Flea Market...wherever & however you can; 17. Provide POSITIVE & CONSTRUCTIVE feedback in judging another performer; 18. PRACTICE MORE Vol. 11 Issue 1 Page 3
4 December s meeting was opened by our president, Gale Molovinsky. He described his experience at the LA Magic History Conference and went on to discuss the election of new officers for Ring 81. David Pitchford was elected as vice president. Otherwise the slate of current officers remains the same. The treasurer, Ed Kaczmarek gave his report and we went on to the main event: twelve brave souls, members in good standing, performed their schtick for a critical audience of magicians. You can t get any better than that. Our master of ceremonies, John Tietjen, aka Jonti opened the festivities with the changing bag routine after which he introduced each of the performers beginning with Jose Reyes and his wife, Hilary. They were not only dressed for a Mexican Christmas his wife even carried the Pinata which was the focus of the act that also involved a changing bag. Next, John Ames did a remarkable slight of hand using two corks. Wes Meltzer demonstrated his mastery of the cut and restored string effect and Nick Enevento followed with a card effect comedy. Scott Hertrick did a beautiful rendition of the sealed box effect. A card is randomly selected by a patron. The corner of the card is torn off and vanished only later to appear in a sealed box untouched throughout the performance. Dave Pitchford did one of his marvelous routines with cards that fool us every time. Jerry Meketon disclosed his icebreaker trick using blank business cards that mysteriously become printed. Ed Seder kept us fascinated with little more than a dictionary. I could not stay for the remainder of the session, but I heard that the card manipulations of Thomas Trieto and Don Rataj were expertly performed. Ed Kaczmarek was the last one to perform and his act involved the Columbini effect and a $ bill. Glad I wasn t there because it would make me nervous to see our treasurer run the risk of losing money. Of course there was no real chance of that. Submitted by Jerry Meketon, Sect. Vol. 11 Issue 1 Page 4
5 Jonti brings Santa to the meeting John Ames was a real corker José & Hillary Reyes introduced us to a piñata Scott Hetrick, keeping with the theme by deciding who was Naughty or Nick Benevento kept us entertained with his card poetry. Wes Meltzer tore some cards and then strung us along for a while Jerry Meketon made sure that he had his business cards David Pitchford with a deck of cards. Who would have thought? Ed Feder demonstrated his mentalism using a dictionary Thomas Prieto combining cards and mentalism Vol. 11 Issue 1 Page 5
