He is respected throughout the world by his peers, applauded for his skills by the most famous of magicians and sought after for repeat performances by clients. Chris Capehart has done it all. In thirty-five years has performed on the big stage, lectured to magicians, become a famous, accomplished street performer, created routines and mastered the linking rings. He has been published and imitated throughout the world. His skill at close-up is no less than astonishing. His quick comeback verbal skills sharpened on the streets of New York City have made him an outstanding comedian. At the Abbott's Convention 2002 he was awarded the Senator Crandall Award for Comedy. At the CAM Convention he worked with Jeff McBride. After his performance Jeff McBride said "He is the only magician I've ever seen who can bring down the house with a stock trick." In Las Vegas at the SAM National Convention Chris Capehart again proved himself to be a master of magic by being the Master of Ceremony for the show. Both Mike Miller and Joan Caesar have labeled Chris Capehart a promoters dream. Chris Capehart is a regular headliner at "Monday Night Magic" in New York City. He has performed in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, New York, Philadelphia, Hollywood, Chicago, Denver and numerous other cities. He will be again performing at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California in February He has also been asked to travel to England to perform at The Blackpool Magic Convention. Chris Capehart has been dubbed "The Ring Master" and for good reasons. The three-ring routine is one of the cornerstones of magical illusions. Chris's three-ring routine, which he perfected in 1981, has been acclaimed by some of the world's most renowned magicians as "the best of the best." He mesmerizes magicians and audiences with a close-up ring routine more commonly performed at a distance. His routine is featured in Volume 13 of the highly acclaimed magic series "Stars of Magic" that is marketed to other magicians around the world. You'll find Chris's fantastic moves incorporated into other magicians ring routines such as Shoot Ogawa's Ninja Rings. Jamy Ian Swiss, Marc DeSousa, Simon Lovell, Denny Haney of Denny and Lee's, Bob Little and Hank Moorehouse have all said that Chris Capehart's Three Ring Routine is not to be missed. 2 From the President What a wonderful way to bring in the joys of springtime in Sarasota. Our first day of April was anything but April Fool's Day, except in the sense of experiencing a lot of fun-making miracles. Al Loeffler, as Vice President and Programs Chairman organized a great up-close training session for a dozen Ring 81 members to learn from the master, Michael Ammar. As this session was in progress, others in Ring 81 provided a fun evening of table-hopping magic for the Temple Beth Shalom outdoor barbeque and picnic. All of this followed by a super lecture by Michael Ammar. The best part of all of this was the amount of performing that went on as well as the help we all got to make our future performances even better. Thanks to you, Al, and to all who gave their support to make this a rewarding and fun evening for so many. Chris Capehart's lecture for our May meeting will undoubtedly round out a very exciting first half of 2010 and looking forward, so will the upcoming flea market/auction, member lectures, and member magic contest. Keep your eye on the calendar. Finally, I want you to know that all of these great events and magical growth opportunities take a lot of hard work from your Ring 81 Board. However, we also want you to know we are elected to serve you and solicit your input. 3 LECTURE BY MICHAEL AMMAR Michael told us that his favorite feat of magic is his left foot, tapped it twice and produced the Ace of Diamonds. He wound up the deck of cards and before we knew it, that Ace became a Four of Clubs which he dubbed the Fly-Away card when he made it vanish. We knew then and there that we were in for a very entertaining evening with Michael Ammar on April 1st. (no joke!) Marvin Rubin selected the Two of Hearts, signed it and returned it to the deck which Michael then placed aside. Three balloons were then removed from an envelope and inflated by Ammar. The first quickly flew away, the second slowly deflated and the third dramatically burst to reveal Marvin s signed card inside. We expected the coin in Michael s hand to vanish but some of us were quite surprised when a small doll-sized arm slowly appeared from inside his palm, crept its way toward the coin, snatched it and quickly disappeared. Both of Ammar s hands were then opened revealing nothing! We learned how to create a moment of anxiety for someone by creating the illusion that their wallpaper had been ripped. This entails folding a piece of paper in half, tearing it into an inverted V, rolling one side of the paper down then sticking it to the wall. If one were devious enough, this could get an interesting reaction if done to a masterpiece in an art museum. Michael turned on his cell phone and showed us a picture of four coins. He then proceeded to pull one coin out of the phone. Holding the (real) coin in his hand he then showed us a picture of the three coins still inside the phone. He pulled the remaining coins out one at a time, each time showing on the screen the number of remaining coins until he had a blank screen and four coins in his hand. We couldn t blame Steve Berger for being a little nervous handing over his i- phone to Ammar who broke the screen, but then (of course) restored it to perfect working condition. 5 Trick of the Month. A Book Test US Grant In an ordinary deck of cards reverse the Ace of Hearts (AH) somewhere near the middle of the deck between a 5 and a 7 of any suit. On the bottom of the deck place a double face card with the AH showing. NOTE: The AH is being used to explain this effect. Any card can be used as long it is a duplicate of one side of the double face card. Before the trick is performed, memorize the 7th word on the first line on page 5 of a magazine or book that is at hand. To perform: From the face down deck remove the bottom card, face up showing the AH. Turn the packet face down and either you or the spectator thrust the AH, face up, into the deck. Be careful that the other side of the double sided card is not revealed. Spread the deck, face up, which will show a reversed card between the 5spot and the seven spot. Turn over the face down card revealing it as the AH. Explain that the two cards split by the AH are keys to strange phenomenon. The five will represent a page number and the seven the seventh word on the first line. Hand out a book or magazine to the spectator. Have him/her open it to page five and look at the seventh word on the first line. In your most dramatic pose and action bring the word to mind and announce it to the spectator.
