General meeting and presentation 7:00 pm. Visit our Web Site at BORIS WILD is one of the most renowned French magicians in the world. He is an international performer, author, creator and lecturer. His specialty is close-up magic, a top-level performance happening a few inches only from your eyes! His performances have drawn thousands of spectators all over the world: London, New York, Las Vegas, Monte Carlo, Sydney and Tokyo... His creativity and original approach of magic allow him to perform for the biggest companies in the most prestigious places of the five continents, such as The Magic Castle in Hollywood where he has already performed more than 100 shows. In 2008, Boris was chosen to be the official magician at the evening gala of the World Economic Forum in Davos which gathers the most influential people of the planet. Boris got the title of French Champion of Magic by winning the Grand Prix AFAP. He was also awarded at the FISM World Championships of Magic and the Monte Carlo Magic Stars. He has appeared on many French and international TV shows: Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde (five appearances), Magic Show at the Lido, Magic Night at the Paradis Latin, Champions of Magic (USA), International Close-up Show (China)... His books, effects and videos are sold worldwide and are all bestsellers. In 2006, Boris appeared in the photo exhibition The World s Greatest Magicians in Stockholm. In 2008, he is chosen to be Guest of Honor at the FFFF Convention, the most prestigious gathering of close-up magicians in the world. He is then the first French performer to get this title and the youngest ever. In 2009, Boris is awarded the Merlin Award for Most Original Close-up Magic by the International Magicians Society and then becomes Chairman of the Close-up Jury at the FISM World Championships of Magic in Beijing. In 2011, he is honored by the Bronze Medal of Cultural Influence from La Renaissance Française and appears on the cover of the famous GENII Magazine with a story of fourteen pages entirely devoted to him. In 2013, he appears on the cover of the video magazine REEL MAGIC, following David Copperfield, and is the recipient of the Robert-Houdin Silver Medal. In 2015, he appears on the cover of MAGICSEEN Magazine, Europe s #1 magic magazine and receives a Special Recognition Award from the International Brotherhood of Magicians for his thirty years of magic. 2 From the President As requested, there will no longer be a President s message. I ve mentioned this before, but nothing s been done, so now we need to set up a more formal arrangement. The members need to pitch in setting up the room before our meetings and cleaning up after them. Although I was responsible for arranging for us to use this space, I didn t intend for set-up and clean-up services to be included in perpetuity! I don t want to have to continue doing this myself, but I also don t want us to lose our meeting space because we re not being good guests. I ve notified the Board about this notice and that it will be include in the newsletter. I now suggest that the Board set up some kind of procedure to insure that the facility is left in the same condition that we found it. It is not a herculean task if all pitch in but a burden for one person to do this all of the time. 3 Trick of the Month. Best Card Trick in the World. Also Called The Chicago Opener Effect: Spectator selects a card, returns it to the deck and it is revealed to be a different color back. It is tried again and the new selection matches the previous selection. Required: On card with a different back than the deck being used. Setup: Different colored card on bottom of deck face down. The matching card, with the original back, is second from bottom. Performance: Spread cards instructing spectator to take any one. Have spectator look at it and show it around. Start a Hindu shuffle and as spectator to tell you when to stop. At that point have card returned to that spot and square the deck. The different colored back is now on top of the selection. Spread the cards and state that the selection has revealed itself by changing color. Cut the deck at that juncture bring the gaffed card to the top of the deck. Do a double lift revealing the selection. Turn cards back down to deck Place gaffed card to table. State that you will try this again. Pick up deck and ask a different spectator to tell you stop while you do another Hindu shuffle. When stop is called show spectator the bottom card. Combine deck and spread on table. Not finding a different color point to the one that is a different color previously placed on table. Reveal the second chosen card by turning over the tabled card. Vol. 13 Issue 5 Page 3

4 Orson Welles Movie buffs know him for his ground-breaking films, like Citizen Kane and The Lady from Shanghai; cinema students study his innovative techniques; historians know him for the night he terrorized a nation with his radio play, "The War of the Worlds." He was a writer, a director, an actor and an all-around genius. But Orson Welles was also a magician. And despite his roller coaster career in Hollywood, making some great and some unusual films, and always scrabbling to raise the money to make another film, Welles had another life. He loved performing magic. Born May 6, 1915, he got his first magic set at the age of three. As a child he saw Houdini perform (Welles was only eleven when the great escapist died in 1926). At the age of ten he ran away from home and was discovered two days later on a Chicago street corner - surrounded by a crowd, doing a magic act! The stage quickly became a magnetic attraction for him, and all through school he was writing and acting. By the time he was twenty he was involved in professional theater, acting and directing on the New York stage, and putting on a weekly radio show called 'The Mercury Theater of the Air." In I940 (he was just 25), Hollywood beckoned and he created what many still consider one of the great films of all time: Citizen Kane. Welles had continued to work on his magic act (many consider his films an extension of his magic) and when World War 11 broke out, he decided to put on a major show for servicemen and women. In 1943, under a huge tent in Hollywood he produced "The Mercury Wonder Show for Servicemen." Military personnel got in free anyone else had to pay. Many film personalities did circus-type acts and Welles performed magic, doing a bullet catch, Houdini's Needle Trick, the borrowed bill appearing in an orange, and many other dazzling effects. That same year Universal Studies did a film called Follow the Boys. In the movie numerous stars did vaudeville acts and Welles' act consisted of sawing actress Marlene Dietrich in half! In the early 1950s he did a three-week stint at the Riviera in Las Vegas. His act (for which he received $45,000) consisted of both magic and doing recitations from Shakespearean plays. Welles always had trouble raising money to produce his own films and spent much of his time acting in the films of others often playing the part of a magician. In Henry Jaglom's film A Safe Place (1971), he was a magician who befriends a small girl. In Get to Know Your Rabbit (1972) he teaches Tommy Smothers to become a tap-dancing magician. In 1973 he directed and acted in a film called F for Fake (never totally finished) in which he does a number of effects including an Asrah Levitation. In my collection, I have a poster for the 1949 film, Black Magic, in which Welles portrays Cagliostro. For many years he had been working on a film project he called The Orson Welles Magic Show. The plot of the film kept changing, but part of the movie was to be a thirty-minute performance of Welles doing magic. It was to be done with one camera angle and no editing cuts. He wanted to prove that the magic was not accomplished by camera trickery or special editing. Orson Welles continued doing magic until his death. He was a frequent guest on talk shows and often did a magic trick as well as waxing eloquent as only he could. The very night before he died he appeared on Mery Griffin's TV show and did a favorite card trick. Unfortunately, The Orson Welles Magic Show, like many of his projects, was never completed. I saw him once on one of his speaking tours, and he recited a favorite anecdote...during one of his WW2 magic shows featuring his wife Rita Hayworth as a box jumper...a reviewer wrote that she was sweating profusely. emerging from an illusion. Welles took offense and wrote a letter to the editor in response, stating that "Miss Hayworth does not sweat...she glows!"
