1 Vol. 8 Issue 10 October 2011 We meet the first Thursday of the month at Beth Sholom, 1050 S. Tuttle Ave. Sarasota FL Workshop at 6:00 pm. Officers meeting 6:30 pm. General meeting and presentation 7:00 pm. Visit our Web Site at Gregory Wilson is a two-time FISM award-winner with a number of best-selling instructional DVD s on the market. In 1998 Greg was also awarded the Most Creative Magician of the Year by the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He has contributed scores of original effects to MAGIC, Genii, The Linking Ring, M.U.M., Arcane, Penumbra, Magic Menu and other magazines well as a full chapter in Paul Harris The Art of Astonishment, a chapter in Harry Lorayne s Best of Friends 3, a chapter in John Lovick s Switch and a chapter in the wildly popular Magic For Dummies. Just don t hold that one against him! What s In Greg s New Lecture? For a limited time, Gregory Wilson is back on the road with a new lecture and lots of unpublished material to share. From close-up to stage, there s a little something for everyone. You ll learn: Exact Change: A soon-to-be stunned spectator names a number from You remove all the change from your pocket and the total matches exactly! It has fooled some of the best minds in magic: Banachek, John Kennedy, Chris Kenner, Paul Harris, Bob Cassidy, Cyril and many more. Chip on Shoulder: Finally for sale, this is the ultimate pack-small-play-big routine with an appearing and disappearing casino chip. Bounce/No Bounce: Sounds cliché to call something a magician-fooler, especially with such a well-known prop. But wait until you see it. Coffeehouse Conjuring: With props found only in a coffeehouse (coffee, cups, lids, straws, napkins, sugar packets, stir sticks, tea bags, etc.), you ll be doing impromptu miracles available on every other street corner around the world. Silverware Swindle: A knife and fork scam that has twisted magicians minds who then twisted Greg s arm to finally put on the market. Rubicon: In Greg s professional repertoire for years, this groundbreaking Rubik s Cube routine will soon be seen on Cyril s new TV special. Plus, a whole lot more: Including Greg s highly visual and midair acrobatic card work. The emphasis here is ENTERTAINMENT. Just because it s called a lecture doesn t mean that it has to be dry and boring. You ll experience a rip-roaring, fast-paced, high-energy, laughout-loud, audience-involving SHOW! Editors note: If you don t go to any other lecturers thorough the year, don t miss this one. Vol. 8 Issue 10 Page 1

2 From the President FROM YOUR VICE PRESIDENT Ed Kaczmarek Last month s lecture featuring Steve Marshall direct from Tokyo, Japan was excellent. If you couldn t find something he did to add to your repertoire, you must have been sleeping. He definitely had something for every experience level. I bought his Diamond Twist just to get the extra large fake diamond. I am taking over a little more of Al Loefflers work load while he recuperates from surgery. We have been in touch frequently and he is getting stronger by the day and is expecting to make it to our October meeting for the Greg Wilson Lecture. I m sure he will get a very big reception from the membership. He may have a little to say (that goes without saying) but he is going to pretty much stay on the back burner for a while. We will be looking for nominations for officers from the floor at our October meeting. So if you would like to serve as an officer or know someone you would like to put in as a nominee, please let one of the officers know either at the meeting or you can me at edsmagic@aol.com or phone me at H# (941) or C# (941) Continued on Page 3 October 6th Greg Wilson November 3rd TBD December 1st TBD Stevie Dee Parties, Conventions, Graduations. 3 We missed our president, Al Loeffler, at our September meeting. He had surgery and will be convalescing for a few months. Meanwhile, our vice president, Ed Kaczmarek, who has been working closely with Al, took up the reins and carried through. Between Al s influence and Ed s extensive knowledge, Ring 81 is doing just fine. The meeting opened early so that members who were specialists in card manipulation could instruct those who wanted to learn. We had three full tables of students and much excitement. Once our invited lecturer was set up, we moved toward the stage where Steve Marshall, just in from a 14 year stay in Japan, demonstrated several effects from his magic routine. He also filled us in on how working as a magician and living in Japan differed from the U.S. Until recently, for example, professionals and amateurs could not be members of the same organization. An organization for close up magic now accepts both. Steve began his act with a yellow poster having a Japanese ideogram painted on it in black letters. The word is supposed to be LEMON written in Kanji, but there are few lemons in Japan and few natives know how to write the ideogram, so one can have a lot of fun with it in either the US or Japan. The end of the trick is pouring lemons out of the folded, but presumably empty poster. He next introduced us to a series of tricks often performed by the Magic Napoleons. One is tall (Bona), the other is short (Parte), sort of a Mutt and Jeff, or Abbott and Costello. They specialize in the Knotted Silk, The Wong Guess and the Diamond Twist. A trick with rubber bands that change colors before your eyes and any calculator that acts strange when you shake it ended the performance. A little socializing and straightening up and the evening was over. Submitted by Jerry Meketon Treas. Continued from P 2 The Magic Gala is starting to shape up very well and we need a lot of volunteers for the one money raising even for the club we have during the year. We are looking for walk-a-round magicians for the lobby as well as ticket takers, stage crews, snake sellers, gofers, etc. Again, please use the # s in the above paragraph. Looking forward to seeing the Greg Wilson Lecture, See you there. Ed K. Vol. 8 Issue 10 Page 3

4 Trick of the Month. A Little Math Miracle For those of us who love mathematical magic, here is a beautiful effect that you can do anywhere, anytime with any deck. A pad and pencil will be handy but not required if simple math can be done in the head. With your back turned.ask the spectator to write down a four digit number, any number. Now, ask the spectator to add together the four digits and subtract them from the original number. Example: Spectator writes He adds =17. Spectator subtracts 17 from 3941 and arrives at Have spectator look through the deck and find four cards who s numerical value equals his total. Also, ask the spectator to make sure that the suits of the for cards are all different. The spectator finds the 3H, NS, TC and 4D, As the spectator to remove one of the cards and put them in his pocket. He/she can lay the other three cards face up on the table as you have no way of knowing the fourth card..??? Looking at the three cards you immediately know the suit. Assuming that the spectator put the nine of spades in his pocket. It s obvious the spade card is missing from the table. You must remember thee key numbers..18,27, and 36, (All three multiples of nine. Mentally add together the total of the cards n the table. In this case it s the 3, a 2. and a 4. So = 9. Subtract your answer from whichever number of the three number immediately higher than you answer. In our example, 9 from 18 equals 9. Nine of spades is the card in the Spectators pocket. If the three cards on the table had totaled 22 then you would have subtracted 22 from 27 and the card in the pocket would be a five. 5 MICHAEL BARRON NEWS Happy Labor day! We are officially more than half way through our Brazilian tour! We have performed for awesome sold out crowds in Sao Paolo, Fortaleza, Recife, Natal, Salvador, and now Belo Horizonte! Next week it's on to Rio de Janiero for a few weeks at Copa Cabana beach! The tour will continue on to Curitiba, Porto Alegre, and Novo Hamburgo before heading back to the US for a break.
