Vol. 5 Issue 6 June 2008 We meets the first Thursday of the month at Beth Sholom, 1050 S. Tuttle Ave. Sarasota FL Workshop at 6:00 pm. Officers meeting 6:30 pm. General meeting and presentation 7:00 pm. Now one of Germany s Flicking Fingers, Visit our Web Site at is visiting select parts of America with his solo lecture-tour. Their book (The Book) has become a modern classic of Close up magic, their group lectures at FISM and the Dessert Magic Seminar in Las Vegas, apart from winning the team Siegfried & Roy s prestigious Sarmoti Award have achieved legendary status, and their over three hours-long DVD The Movie is generally considered one of the funniest, most informative and all-around best magic-dvd of recent years. Manuel Muerte, the team s official master of misdirection presents not only several original effects for parlor and Close Up work but also offers insights into principles of misdirection and how to make your magic more deceptive and entertaining. The perfect blend of theory and practice! He has won the second price in Close Up at FISM 2000 and the first price in comedy at FISM 1994 in Yokohama Japan. He has lectured in all of the major cities in Europe. He did several lecture tours in America and finally he performed his lecture at FFFF, at the Magic Castle and at FISM This lecture will also introduce his new DVD that covers in detail the concepts and effects presented in the lecture: *Cups and Balls. * Casanovas Coin - a coin and a wristwatch penetrate a ladies stocking. * The Wonder Box: - a card appears several times under a cigar box with a surprise finish. * Card in Shoe: - a signed card and a glass appear inside of the performers shoe. * Bill Quick Change: - an impromptu version of the $100 bill switch. * Bill in Lemon: - a new method. * Jackpot: - a new version of an old theme: a coin vanishes several times ala the one armed bandit, complete with surprise ending. * Mental Effect a clever new effect with no name. The entire lecture will be performed in English. Vol. 5 Issue 6 June 2008 Page 1
Magic Workshop From the President Once again our workshop is what you make it. Bring along something that you want to share with your member friends or ask for help with something that you re having trouble with. You re not restricted to anything. There is usually someone there who has had the same problems and is willing to share the knowledge. There s no better place to learn than in the company of members with similar interests. If someone is willing to coordinate the close up sessions please let one of your Board members know. It s not required that you do the teaching but scheduling is required. June 5th July 3rd Manuel Muerte Aldo Colombini & Rachel Wild Let your Board know who you would like to see and they will attempt to book that performer Stevie Dee Parties, Conventions, Graduations. You name it, He does it. Steve can be reached at: or FAX I want to start off by congratulating Bud Hedger for the fine job he did with his very first lecture. Bud seemed very natural and composed for a first timer. He was funny and informative. Good job Bud! I was really impressed. I am very excited about our upcoming lecturer, Manuel Muerte. (June 5 th ) He is a FISM Award winner all the way from Germany. This should be one of our best yet. Please encourage your friends and others interested in Magic to attend. As usual, there is a $15 per person guest fee whenever we have a Guest Lecturer. Jim Levell has lined up Aldo Colombini and Rachel Wild (his wife) to lecture on July 3 rd. Aldo and Rachel are a favorite at our club. They put on a very entertaining lecture and they have one low price for all of their tricks. Just $10 each. They also have very well put together lecture notes. I know we all look forward to seeing them again. Last month I asked Michael Kent to head up the Gala-Fund Raiser event this year. He has already started making contact with the Glenridge Performing Arts Center to see if we can use their wonderful facility again this year. He is also starting to contact some magicians etc. to see who would be interested in performing or MC. Michael and I will be looking for suggestions and help from anyone and everyone in the club to help with this year s event. It will be a tough goal to try to beat last year s Gala. Everyone involved did a fantastic job. This is the Club s main source of revenue for the upcoming year and helps us to have so many wonderful lectures etc. Thank you all in advance for your continued help and support. 3 MAGICAL REMINISCING With Jim Peterson NELSON C. HAHNE Art Director for the Linking Ring Magazine Nelson C. Hahne ( ) was one of magic's finest illustrators.he literally did thousands of illustrations for books, catalogs and magazines, starting in 1924 and continuing until his death in 1970 at the age of 61. Today in The Linking Ring Magazine there is a Linking Ring CLASSICS which features a cartoon by Nelson C. Hahne. Our Editor, Samuel Patrick Smith, has done this to honor his memory. Tony Dunn is the current Art Director for the magazine, but beginning in the forties and continuing for four decades Nelson Hahne had the position. He grew up in Ohio and magic and art were an important part of his life even as a youngster. He graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce. Following graduation Nelson attended art school and got a job in the advertising field. Hahne believed the ideal magician should be made up of certain ingredients. In his first book, "Here's Magic", Hahne wrote that a magician..."must have a dash of daring and a dash of audacity in his makeup." All of the magicians Hahne illustrated possessed those elements. He spent some time in Chicago working on Laurie Ireland's first catalog and also illustrating Laurie's first book, "Ireland Writes A Book". He did hundreds and hundreds of magic illustrations for Floyd Thayer, Max Holden, National Magic Company, John Synder, Jr., Nelson Enterprises, etc. Fortunately, Hahne signed almost all of his work and many of his illustrations were even dated. He signed his work in different ways, and would often just letter his name "Nelson Hahne" or just "Hahne". Today, Ring 81 member, tony Dunn has several original Hahne drawings in his collection. He and his wife, Virginia, moved to Pompano Beach, Florida in 1970 just prior to his death from cancer. Former editor Howard Bamman stated in the December 1970 issue of The Linking Ring, "His respect for art and magic were profound and he generously shared his talents on the pages of the Ring Magazine. His magic and humor with pen and brush still are an inspiration today for the many that remember him and his work. Re: The Art of Deception Page 114 Vol. 5 Issue 6 June 2008 Page 3
Trick of the Month. U Find Your Card Lu Brent (NSR) This clever trick also originally appeared in Encyclopedia of Card Tricks. No set up required. Any place, Any deck, Any time. Using any deck allow the spectator to shuffle the cards, then divide them into two packets. Have spectator choose one of the packets and give you the other. Tell him that while your back is turned he is to select a card from his packet, remember what it is and place it on top of his packet. Turn your back and tuck your elbows firmly to your sides to conceal any movement. Reverse the bottom card of your packet and also the second card from the top. When spectator is ready, turn around, and place your packet on top of the spectator s cards. Tell him to place the cards behind his back and follow your instructions. He is to take the top card and put it on the bottom of the deck. Turn over the top card and place it in the middle of the deck. When done he is to turn around and hand you the deck. Spread the cards on the table or fan them in hand to reveal one reversed card. Divide the pack at that point. Restate all that was done. He shuffled the cards, made a fee choice, combined both packets and freely inserted a reversed card anywhere in the deck. Have spectator name his card Turn over the card below the reversed card and reveal the selection. There is a very small possibility that the spectator will insert the card between the face up card and his selection. If this happens, the card you turn up will not be the one he names. His card will be the next one. Simply turn it up and congratulate the spectator on being so close. If you change your address or subscribe to a new one, please notify the club secretary. We communicate with the majority of our members this way and want to make sure that you re not left out of the electronic loop. Vol. 5 Issue 6 June 2008 Page 4
Every month we ask the members who they would like to see as a performer at our monthly meetings. There are many performers out there who if they happen to be going through this area would be happy to perform and sell their wares here in Sarasota. Give the Board your suggestions and they will, if possible, try to get that performer. The following is a listing of magicians who have previously entertained and amazed us. Ron London, Dick Barry, Harry Allen, Zeke Hammer, Rev. Bill Baker, Rocco, Phil Fenton, Daryl, Mark Mason, Carrol Baker, Jeff Ezell, Dirk Losander, Michael Baron, Chad long, Tom Jones, Rick Fisher, Ian Suyz, Tony Dunn, Danny Tong, Carl Andrews, Jim Pace, Joshua Jay, Shoot Ogawa, Martin Nash, Kostya Kimlat, Paul Cummins, James Swain, Dave Downer, Michael Ammar, Aldo Colombini & Rachel Wild, Dan Garrett, Alex Proctor, Pavel, Diamond Jim Tyler, Doc Eason, Sterling Steal, Alex Geiser Many of our own members have stepped up and performed for us. Jim Peterson, Mark Alan, Bud Hedger, Michael Kent, Ed Kaczmarek, Bob Scekeres, Bob Banta, Ken Chandler, Ilan, Cameron Cruce, Windy Douton, With such a long list of talent it s most certain that someone was left out. No slight intended. The information of years past is not readily available. Our magic library is constantly growing under the supervision of James Levell. Like any other library you need to have a library card in order to access the collection. Ring 81 is not issuing cards but there are some parameters in place. If you donate some magic item such as a book, VHS tape, DVD etc you automatically become a member. If you do not have anything to donate but want to be able to access various items, you can pay a one time fee of $10 to have lending privileges. This is one library where no one is going to say shhhh. Vol. 5 Issue 6 June 2008 Page 5
Arnieism of the Month Arniebaby---who wants you to know that--- Live, Love and Enjoy. None of us has a warranty, but we all have an expiration date. Your suggestions and submissions are not only appreciated they are sought. Share a trick, an event or anything relevant to Ring 81. Want More Magic? A group of Ring 81 members meet every Tuesday from 7 to 9 pm at Bennigans Sarasota, Bahia Vista and Rte. 41. It s a nice informal atmosphere in which to share and compare your latest effects with some of your fellow club members.
