2 From the President Written by the Editor Al Loeffler has spend the last few month with major medical problems but still remains positive and optimistic in all our conversations. His last bout with an operation on the lung left him some what weakened. He is determined to get back on his feet as soon as possible and once again put on his silly hat and lead our club. I did not ask him to write a President's report for this issue but instead to allow him to spend his time getting better. I m sure that I speak for all of the members wishing Al a speedy recovery and look forward to his resuming his role in the Ring. The November 3rd meeting will feature non other but member Jonti, aka John Tietjen He will be lecturing and demonstrating on MAGIC and U. Included will be, using something old, something borrowed and something new. He also poses the question, What is UCCU? Stevie Dee Parties, Conventions, Graduations. You name it, He does it. Steve can be reached at: or FAX Support Our Members CIGAM HOUSE OF MAGIC th St. West Bradenton FL JONTI Head Magician Slight of hand, DVDs, Lessons Phone: jontimagic@tampabay.rr.com Vol. 8 Issue 11 Page 2

3 This October meeting brought us beautiful cool weather, an excellent magician and lecturer, Gregory Wilson and the happy presence of our president, Al Loeffler, short from surgery but long on good cheer. Due to Joe Floersheimer s advanced newsletter, we had more visitors than we ve had in a long time, all of them illustrious. Among the visitors was Tony Dunn, an illustrator of magical moves whose work we have all admired but few of us have met in person. It is our good fortune that he works for the Linking Ring. Ed Kaczmarek, our vice president, opened the meeting with a problem that other chapters may be experiencing too. Our major fund-raising Gala though a great artistic success, fell short at the box office. Consequently, we will either have fewer lecturers or pay less. If we pay less, the number of lecturers will likely shrink, a condition no one really wants. So we are all pulling for the 2012 Gala, Tuesday, January 24 th. We were also reminded that we donate our services to public benefits and festivals. A new one that Dick Johnson sponsors is at the G-Wiz museum for their benefit and the benefit of the Players Theater. Now comes the great impromptu magician, Greg Wilson, with rapid moves, fast patter and excellent teaching skills. He spent a fair amount of time on his chip on shoulder routine. A casino chip disappears and reappears on different sides of a volunteer s shoulders, while the volunteer s watch disappears and his wallet disappears. The chip appears and disappears from the magician s hands making us all dizzy figuring it out. Once explained, there was a rush to buy the props. He introduced us to the exact change effect where a spectator calls out a number between 1 and 100. The magician empties his pockets and the coins add up to the exact total. He showed us his new ball point pen routine where the cap keeps invisibly moving from one end of the pen to the other. Unfortunately, I had to leave before he demonstrated his acrobatic card routine, but I heard it was excellent Even better than his magic secrets, he shared with us his observations of people learned over many years. For example, most people will allow you to touch them on the shoulder or upper arm without complaint. They will accept you looking into their eyes. But if you do both at the same time, they ll get upset. So when he does his chip on shoulder, he always looks away. He also demonstrated how if you can get someone to do something, even something trivial, it becomes easier for that person to comply with other requests. I remember a workshop with Milton Erickson, the famous psychiatrist -hypnotist, where he used this approach to induce hypnosis. From a simple request to sit in a particular chair and then move her body slightly, she was in a trance, responding to his suggestions without resistance. So magicians and hypnotherapists are not so far apart, I ve often thought a skilled magician could solve all of our problems. Submitted by Jerry Meketon Vol. 8 Issue 11 Page 3

4 Trick of the Month. Blue and Red Prediction Adapted by Bob Banta and David Pitchford from Mentalist s Dream, Self-Working Mental Magic by Karl Fulves, page 23 Effect: Three spectators (may be one, two or three) each in turn choose a number between ten and twenty. The mago, from a red deck, counts their selected number of cards to the table in a facedown packet. Mago then adds the digits of their respective numbers together and from the top of the just-dealt packet, counts the number of cards equal to the sum of the digits, facedown to yet another packet. The top card of the last-dealt packet is revealed is now the spectator's selected card. Each spectator in turn takes the last card dealt. Mago removes a blue-backed deck from its box and spreads the deck revealing three face up cards that match, in order, the three cards held by the spectators! Setup: 1. Needed, one red-back and one blue-back deck. 2. From the blue back deck, remove the 10S, JH and QC. Turn these cards face up, and in order (10S, JH and QC), insert them back into the face down deck with the 10S ten to fifteen cards from the bottom, JH in the middle and QC ten to fifteen cards from the top. 3. From the red-backed deck, select the same three cards (10S, JH and QC). Place these cards face down in the face down deck at the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth positions, respectively, from the top of the face down deck. Procedure: 1. For three spectators.* 2. With the red-backed deck, perform a false shuffle or a false cut. 3. Ask the first spectator to give you a number between ten and twenty (not the number ten or the number twenty, although the number ten will work). 4. Count the number of cards equal to the chosen number (example thirteen), face down to the table. 5. Lay the remainder of the deck face down on the table and pick up the just-dealt face down pack. 6. To make this even more random please add the two digits together. Example, one plus three equal four. 7. Count that number of cards (four) face down to the table. 8. Turn over the top card (the fourth card dealt) and place it in front of the spectator on the table. 9. Pick up the just-dealt pack from the table and place these face down on top of the face down tabled remainder of deck. 10. Drop the remaining packet face down on top of the face down deck. Note in every case, this packet will always be nine cards. This will position the next spectator s card tenth from the top. 11. Repeat steps 3 through 10 for the next two spectators. 12. Now remove the blue-backed deck from its box and spread the deck revealing three face up cards, 10S, JH, and the QC, that match, in order, the three cards held by the spectators! *Description for three spectators. For a different number of spectators simply turn the number of cards in the blue-back deck face up to match the number of spectators. Likewise, make sure the same number of cards is stacked in the red-backed deck, starting at the tenth card from the top. Pay attention to the order of the cards. The tenth down card should be the same card as the card nearest the bottom in the face down blue-backed deck. One to three spectators is optimal. Vol. 8 Issue 11 Page 4
