Letter from the Prez Page 5 PSSST! This is Leigh, your LOTA Editor. Our president is out of town and could not get his monthly letter to me on time. I am sure he would have said something like I like the thank everyone who attended the David Ginn Workshop, it was educational, fun, and we got some great tricks in our goody bags. Frank would also most likely ask members to spread the word about our Auction this month (see page 5 for details), and our normal meeting night on the 21st of October. If Frank was not going to say these things, then OOPS! My Bad.
Magic Auction & Flea Market Page 6 There are so many items available representing ALL KINDS OF MAGIC that Andy invites you to contact him ahead of time at (480) if you are looking for anything special and he will bring it to you for inspection that Saturday. Visit ring55.org now for details on how YOU can have a sales table and/or offer your own items for auction. Please feel free to contact our Vice Prez, Ken Browne at brownekr@yahoo.com with any questions. Mark your calendar now for Saturday, October 11th/9:30 A. M. Admission is FREE (you do not need to be a member) and you are invited to sell, bid or just come for FUN! WOW! October 11th (Saturday) is the date of this year s Ring #55 SUPER MAGIC AUCTION. In addition to all the regular FUN activities, this year you will have the opportunity to bid on items from the estate of longtime collector JP Jackson (California) courtesy of Andy Greget. Both Andy and Ring 55 will be accepting Credit and Debit Cards for payment to make it easier to buy the great things you want. The Auction is scheduled for Saturday, October 9:30 A.M. at the Las Vistas Clubhouse (where the Christmas Party is held, etc.). You may submit your list of items to Leigh now. Want to sell items DIRECTLY to customers? You can rent a table space for only $10 and keep all your profits. Contact Ken Browne or Jay Gorham to reserve your spot. (NOTE: Due to very limited number of tables at the clubhouse, it is highly recommend you bring your own folding table)
Wizards World by Larry Wilfong Page 7 Attached is a picture of a Zig-Zag, Thin Model Sawing and a seldom seen Cross Escape illusion. All have been brought into being through the actions of three former members of Ring #55. Here's "the rest of the story": Gil Reagan had the parts cut out for years, but with his duties as a JAG serving with the U.S.A.F. all over the world he just never had time to work on these projects. Our friend Kirby loves presenting stage illusions, so Gil generously gave the unfinished components to Kirby. Kirby moved to California and had to forgo taking these bulky pieces with him; so Kirby gave the raw illusion parts to Victor Gade. Victor loves to perform magic and build his own equipment. However, Victor was persuaded (hi Susan) to move from Phoenix to Waterloo, Iowa. Victor took the cut-out parts with him. The GOOD NEWS is that today I've received a picture from Victor showing the FINISHED PRODUCTS> all with the fine tuning and special improvements for which Victor is known. Everyone involved is soooo pleased that these illusions will now bring decades of fun and mystery to audiences of young and old alike. Larry
SEPTEMBER RING REPORT by Mamata Hotz Page 8 We had two ring events this month. On Saturday, September 13th IBM Ring 55 had a special magic event that was one of the highlights of this year. A David Ginn Workshop. As we walked into the lecture room, The back wall was lined with tables with great magic products available for sale. Behind those tables was a row of shopping bags each with a name written on it. It was OUR names. Everyone who attended the workshop got one of these bags full of free goodies including tricks and DVDs. President Frank Pastula Jr. introduced David Ginn and from there on, we have one of the most enjoyable magic workshop we seen in years. My husband Leigh Hotz told me that Mr. Ginn was one of his early influences in his magic career and had owned many of his earlier books. Even though I do not do any magic myself, I enjoyed the whole workshop from the tricks, to the special handling of kids, and psychology behind of why he does things the way he does. After a couple hours, we had a break for lunch, and to buy some of the magic tricks available before they were sold out. After our break, we reconvened for the 2nd half of the workshop which was just as entertaining and educational as the 1st half. At the end of David s workshop he gave us an inspirational speech to leave with (along with our free goody bags and items we had purchased). A few days later on Tuesday the 16th, Ring 55 had our normal monthly meeting. President Frank Pastula Jr. talked about our upcoming magic auction and flea market on October 11th, and was looking for volunteers. Larry Wilfong gave us a controversial topic of who actually invented the black art principle. It apparently was derived from a theatrical show accidental lighting mistake that was eventually taken advantage of my magicians for their art. Larry then performed a vintage black art prop which was the precursor to what we know today as a square circle production prop. Our meeting theme this month was My 1st Magic Trick some of the performers included Gary Bullock who did a card prediction. He was followed by Leigh Hotz who did his multiplying ball routine with a few added silk moves. Bailey did a card effect, then Frank Pastula Jr. showed us a old classic broken and restored toothpick. He followed it with a mental choice type effect. Stewart Friedman showed off a knot on shoelace trick. At the end of the night after we got our magic fix, we were reminded once more about our auction to look forward to next month. Mamata Hotz
Wizards World by Craig Brooks SUPREME MAGIC DING DING One of the more intelligent silk production items had what was likely the worst title for a trick ever, Supreme Magic's Ding Ding. Released for the first time in 1962, it was the invention of a gentleman by the name of Adi Kaufman who gave it to Werner Geissler-Werry of Germany. Werry then gave the rights in England to Edwin Hooper and Supreme Magic. For those not familiar with the Werry name, he was the European equivalent of UF Grant and he was responsible for a lot of magic over several decades. Like Grant there was a wide variety from stage to close-up, original and innovative. Ding Ding, originally called Das Ding or The Thing, is a brilliant method for producing primarily silks, though it was a load container and anything that fit could be produced. The beauty of this screen/tube is that is was deceptively thin and could be cleanly shown on both sides. When I say cleanly I mean without any of the usual choreographed handlings that other screens used, to conceal a load chamber. There was nothing added to or taken away, yet the screen would produce a number of large silks. The capacity was quite large for the size of the screen. I have included a copy of the original Supreme ad which completely details not only handling but the first showing of it to Werry by Adi. If props and silk magic are your "thing" you would have a phenomenal method for producing the silks you needed for a particular trick by incorporating Das Ding. It was a wonderfully simple idea and easy to execute...the best kind. Page 9
