1 Everyone knows that drinking alcohol can be great fun, but as we also know alcohol can be deadly as well. It's a very powerful drug which affects both body and mind, so you must treat it with the greatest of respect. Everyone during their life will arrive at the decision to quit drinking alcohol and this was true for Carol Klein. Dear Friends, This is a true story by Carol Klein. Carol now lives in Chicago, USA, and is now happily married to her husband, and is a mother of two wonderful daughters and one wonderful son. Not everything has always been this rosy for Carol. By the early age of 16, Carol had began sampling different alcoholic drinks and in her early twenties her drinking problem had began to spiral out of control. Carol is now 38 and a reformed alcoholic. Like lots of us, Carol tried a ton of stuff to try and help her quit her drinking problem, but she saw very little results. What you re about to read is the transcription from a telephone conversation I had with Carol on February 1st, Ed: Ed Philips here...please can I speak to Carol? Carol: Hi Ed, It's Carol speaking. Ed: Hi Carol, I ve just received your message you left me the other day asking if I could call you back because you have some great news to tell me.

2 Carol: Yes I have Ed, you have helped me over come my drinking problem and also taught me how to become a stronger person, and I have a lot to thank you for. Ed: WOW... That s absolutely amazing news Carol. You must be so proud of yourself? Carol: Yes I am Ed, and you have no Idea how much happier I am as a person, not just with myself but my family too. So that is why I d like to share my story with you and maybe I just might help someone else along the way. Ed: No problem Carol, would you mind if I recorded this? Carol: Sure go ahead. Ed: Okay let s start at the beginning... when did all this begin and how old were you? Carol: My mother and father had always drunk at home, so there was always Alcohol available. I had just turned 16 and I had invited some of my friends round for my birthday. All night they had begged me to open some of my parent s alcoholic drinks. So as you do when you re that age, you want to be the coolest teenager in the room, so I did. Ed: Then what happened? Carol: Well we drank, and to be honest I really enjoyed it. The next morning I woke up with a bad head and I also got the grilling of a life time off my parents. Ed: So you didn t learn anything from that experience? Carol: Not a thing, in fact the only thing I did learn was that I liked the taste of alcohol. Ed: So this is how it all began... And at what age did you realise you had a drinking problem?

3 Carol: Yup...that is how it all began just after my 16 th birthday. I was in my early twenties I would say around when I released I had a drinking problem. Ed: Had you met your husband by then? Carol: Yes, we had been married for just over 9 months and we where expecting our first child. Ed: So you carried on drinking through you pregnancy and did you not know that is the worst thing you can do as this leads to birth defects. This is caused because alcohol crosses into the placenta, which is your baby s blood stream. And Carol do you also know that every time you had a drink your unborn child was drinking the same. Did you know that? Carol: Yes I did know about that, but at the time I didn t even think about it as all I was interested in was having my daily dosage of alcohol. Yes I was a bad mother, but it s something I have to live with for the rest of my life. Ed: Did it affect your work? Carol: At first I was OK as my friends would always cover up for me being late, or not turning up, and when I did; and had to speak to people, I d always have a bag full of chewing gum at hand, so I didn t reek at alcohol. Ed: Then what happened? Carol: After a while my friends gave up on me, and basically told me enough was enough and that I had to sort my problems out. Ed: Did you? Carol: Yes, I joined numerous programs over the following months. They were OK at first and it did help me in the short term, but they never really taught me how to understand why I was drinking, and how to cope with it. So I just gave up on them.

4 Ed: Were you still drinking when you had your second and third children? Carol: Again I am very sorry to say this, and it still upsets me to this day when I talk about it, but I was still drinking everyday. Nothing I had tried had really helped me. Ed: Are you OK to carry on with this Carol... you seem to be very upset. Do you want to leave it for a while and I ll call you back later on? Carol: Please carry on Ed, I need to get this off my chest. I have done wrong in my life and I know I have, but as a family we now need to move forward and make the most out of our lives while we're still here. Ed: Did you end up losing your job through drinking? Carol: Yes, I nearly lost everything we had. Ed: Did your husband ever tell you that you had a drinking problem? Carol: Yes Ed: The next question is a hard one Carol, but did you ever think your husband would walk out on you and take the kids with him? Carol: Yes every single day, and to be honest I ll never know just how lucky I am. It s a woman s dream to have kids and a loving husband, but I was so close to losing it all. Ed: Can you remember what day it was when you knew you had a serious drinking problem? Carol: Yes crystal clear, when I went to the shops and I told myself before I went in that I wasn t going to buy any alcohol and the only thing I walked out with was a bottle of vodka. I look back now and I think how sad I was. Ed: Was this the turning point in your life?

5 Carol: Yes Ed: So what did you do? Carol: Sometimes people just need to take a step back and look at what s really important to them which is what I did. I went over the things that really counted to me like my children, my husband and all of my close family, and drinking alcohol wasn t one of them. That day we were all sat at the table having dinner and I made a promise to them that I ll do what ever it takes to conquer my drinking problem, and do you know what Ed... I have a tear in my eye saying this, but to my amazement all four gave me the biggest hug I d had in years and said they'd support me all the way. Ed: You must be so proud of all four of them, knowing that they would stick by you through the hard times? Carol: Yes I can t really tell or try to explain the feeling that I had that day, I just knew everything would be OK. Ed: So what happened next? Carol: Well, my husband and I started to do our research on the web and that is when we stumbled across your website.
