Natalie & I are talking about starting a family soon, but we need more room in our home not only for the child but for the new illusions we put together each year. Plus we are hoping to have a rehearsal space in our new home that would make it easier than moving furniture each time we practice. (Cont) Natalie & I first met General Grant when we attended the Magicians Alliance of Eastern States convention in General Grant had a booth in the dealer room, I had heard of him by name but did not know much more than that. Gen Grant performed in the dealer show and blew Natalie & myself away with his flawlessness and professionalism. I found myself in awe with the ease at which he accomplished his magic. After his show, Natalie & I complimented him on his routine and spoke with him about Natalie putting dove work into her part of our Magic & Illusion show. He taught her about doves and gave her pointers and gave her confidence that I could not have. He encouraged her and helped create her routine she now uses. Natalie & I will always have a special place in our hearts for Gen Grant. He is an amazing magician and a great guy. Magic News / Paul Daniels sells his magic collection on Ebay... Paul Daniels is a world famous magician who I consider the David Copperfield of England. He had a series of magic specials on TV over there in the 1980 s and has traveled the world with his magic. He has amassed a huge magic collection over the years and is now planning on selling off a lot of his magic and illusions on Ebay. This brings up a lot of interest in the magic community, not only because this auction is available to magicians and non magicians alike but some feel that this is a type of exposure. Magicians love keeping their secrets close to their vest, but with magic going to the highest bidder world wide this may be an issue with the famous Magic Circle in England. Let me put this in perspective, can you imagine if David Copperfield sold his collection on Ebay? How crazy that would be, think about that... Wes Iseli s Video of the Month / Visual coin vanish This month I decided to show you a trick I first saw when I was little. It really confused me then and is still 20 years later an amazing effect. This effect was on one of Doug Henning s first TV specials and he performed it on the edge of the stage in front of a live audience. I have showed this to several of my friends and it is truly a stunning piece of magic. It is one of those secrets that is almost as cool as the trick itself. I hope you enjoy! Natalie & I work a lot of different pageants and have even performed our illusion show for a few. I have emceed at a few pageants as well as judged talent portions. It saddens me, it is a shame that is all people talk about. I have given my life to help these animals but the criticism is constant from the overzealous and uneducated. I have seen Rick s show personally and if they give him a chance and watched the show they would see that he truly loves those cats and does everything he can to educate people on their struggle in the wild. People are protesting an idea without knowing what really goes on behind the scenes. Party Magic News / Did you know? Party Magic has been in business for 15 years this year. Things soon went bad quickly, you see Houdini had asked for an older docile horse and they brought him a young wild colt. Since the horse was not used to having someone on its back it began to buck.

Luckily the horse did not do that, but instead took off at full gallop down the road.

Magicians have an air of being not mere mortals, that they somehow know more than the average man or their skills are somehow superior. I am sure every magician in the world has a story that would show their short comings. Even the great Harry Houdini s ego took a hit during one of his public publicity stunts when he decided to up the danger factor for one of his escapes. Houdini invited the press and the public to witness an escape that had never before been attempted. He addressed the crowd then mounted a horse, they tied his hands behind his back and they tied his feet together under the horse s belly. Things soon went bad quickly, you see Houdini had asked for an older docile horse and they brought him a young wild colt. Since the horse was not used to having someone on its back it began to buck. Houdini could not be thrown from the horse because he was tied to it. What worried everyone was that the next possible scenario was for the horse to drop to the ground and try to roll Houdini off. Luckily the horse did not do that, but instead took off at full gallop down the road. Houdini sat helpless and could not escape until the horse wore itself out, which did not happen until Houdini was several miles away. The problem was that when Houdini did make his escape no one was there to see it. The newsmen and the public all went back to work joking about what was just attempted and how ridiculous the stunt was. Houdini had made a miscalculation not to try out the escape beforehand. His lesson he learned was not to practice in public and to plan for all outcomes. Harry Houdini This story was paraphrased from the book titled The secret life of Houdini by Kalush & Sloman Magic as a full time job part 2 Natalie & I do several types of shows, from small family shows to company picnics all the way up to our full evening Vegas style Illusion show. I thought this month I would fill you in on what it takes to put on the average show. One hour prior to leaving our home on a show day I will go get the show animals out of the outside building and put them in their travel cages, which usually entails 2 doves and 2 bunnies. Then we check the show contract to see if the customer ordered any extras, such as levitation, kid magician, magic from our web page etc. Our van is already loaded with the main parts of our show, but most extras we need to pack for each show separately. If it is a large show our big sound system will also need to be loaded. Then we put on our show clothes and get ready to go. We then load the van and plug in the address into the navigation. Since we spend so much time in our van we try to make it as comfortable as possible. We have a Sirius radio, a cooler, a DVD player, and a couch to nap on while the other drives. It is very common to spend way more time on the road traveling to a show than it takes to set up, perform and pack up the show. Below are a few pictures from back stage at our illusion show. Take it with your left hand and make a big production about placing it in the palm of your right hand. You then turn your hand over as you make a fist and say the magic word. You then turn your hands over and slowly open them and the coin has vanished from you right hand only to reappear in your left hand. Secret: The magic is done when you turn your hand over and make your fists. It is done in one fluid motion, while quickly throwing the coin from the right hand into the left hand. Tip: This will take a lot of practice in front of a mirror. Tip 2: After your hands are closed take your time revealing that the magic has happened. It will seem more magical if you wait a moment or two then say the magic has happened, that way it will not be so obvious to your spectators what actually happened.
