Twin City Postcard Club Volume TCPC XXXI NOV/DEC Number VOLUME XXXIII NUMBER 6 Cute Kitchen Helpers By Dean Borghorst IN THIS ISSUE Cute Kitchen Helpers TCPC Show Another Success Notice of Intent to Incorporate 1, Norman s Bakery was located on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis and distributed these two postcards and one trade card. I bet the girls had fun watching the hustle and bustle of the shop. One of the cards is postmarked 1911 but the bakery, like most good bakeries, is long gone. The event was a big success. The new location was bigger making it much easier for dealers to display their merchandise. There was plenty of room for displaying the postcard boards too. Thanks to all who assisted in making it happen! See more photos on page 6 & 7.
Intent to Incorporate Vote Scheduled for November 18 The board of directors has decided to incorporate TCPC in the state of Minnesota -something that requires membership action. Copies of the proposed by-laws and constitution will be available for members to pick up and review at the November TCPC business meeting. This topic will be brought up for discussion and a vote to incorporate. Why incorporate? In this day and age, it is an advantage for any club or organization to incorporate itself in order to be recognized as a non-profit (501c) group so as to avoid potential issues. This establishes legal protection for the officers and members of the club in separating personal assets from the club. Cost for incorporation is low, By-laws and a constitution must be filed with the application for incorporation Will this change anything on a regular basis? No, it simply is put in place as a way to provide the legal protection as stated. If anyone wishes to know more, google incorporation in Minnesota and see what is documented. If we do have business meetings, the secretary will keep minutes as needed so there are records of what transpired At the November meeting we will vote on incorporation, so we can elect officers during the December meeting. We will need a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer as elected officials. The secretary position is a requirement under the constitution and by-laws. Individuals must nominated and elected in December s meeting along with the other positions for the TCPC Board of Directors. Welcome New Members: Gordon and Yvonne Cariveau, Oronoco, MN Postcard interests: wide range - main streets; real photos; Halloween, etc. We are on the web! 3 From Plymouth Plantation Horn-Book Here is a facsimile of an early horn-book. Though not really a book, it was the first primer from which the colonist s children learned their letters. It was a thin, paddle-shaped piece of wood, and had placed upon it a parchment page, protected by the sheet of transparent horn (hence the name). The early pilgrim horn-books showed only letters. Illustrations were added later. Thanks to Chuck Donley for providing this postcard which provides us with a glimpse of what these early colonists used..editor Helpers from page 1 PAGE 3

The quality of cards made this show enjoyable and I know that I, for one, look forward to the show that is already in the plan for The photos tell the story and I don t need to say more! PAGE 4

TCPC Fall Show 2009 The fall postcard show was much anticipated as dealers and collectors gathered at the West St. Paul Armory to sell and purchase postcards. This is the clubs first time at this location. It provided more room and better lighting. The club thanks all dealers, collectors and the volunteers that made it possible to put on the event. Here are a few photos from the show but if you wish to see more photos, please enjoy additional photos on the TCPC website. PAGE 6

Depot Postcards By John L. Cole Railroad depots seem to be high on collectors lists of valuable postcards. Real photo postcards are considered number one with printed postcards number two. Real photo depot postcards from 1900 s to 1950 s seem to be high in demand but low in availability. Today s newer depot postcards from the 1970 s to the 1990 s are the only ones that are available in quantity. They were made by Roberta Niesz and her father of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They accumulated a collection of depot negatives by trading photographs with other railroad fans. They cataloged the depots by states. When reprints were made, the batch was five cards. These postcards were originally made when some postcard dealers wanted images put on postcard paper stock. Roberta purchased older postcard paper wherever she could find it. Finally, in the 1980 s, she purchased the remaining stock of Kodak paper. Depots were printed on different brands of paper such as AGFA, Ilford and Kodak. She ran out of paper in 1993 and had to find another way to produce postcards. Since then, Roberta has printed the negatives on 3 1/2 by 5 paper which is different than the 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 postcard stock. This required her to crop the picture. Using the modern Ilford paper, the silver content is lower so the image isn t as nice. That is probably why the older cards are in such high demand. Roberta still fills orders for depot cards but asks if they want postcard stock, which is available for some depots. If she is out of the older stock, she supplies the newer cards. I have been trying to find the CGW depot in Kenyon, Minnesota for years. I was finally given one of Roberta s depots from a pen pal in New Hampshire. At least now, I have one to fill the space in my album. Above is an example of a standard sized postcard. To the right is an example of the modern photo postcard. Note how it is trimmed down on the right side. PAGE 8
Editor s Challenge The three postcards to the right illustrate what appears to be two men who apparently shot several horses. There isn t a good explanation why this occurred. Does anyone have an idea what could have prompted this? To All TCPC Members and Friends Happy Thanksgiving And A Very Merry Christmas PAGE 9
