Maybe it was a new web site r maybe an imprtant date related t a significant event r maybe a new database was released. Whatever it was I nted it n the paper f the first page f the web site. The Handuts simply prvide me with the pprtunity t fcus in n what I cnsider are imprtant genealgical bits f infrmatin imprtant t the researcher as well as t share my wn persnal thughts n why it is f nte. 8 Handut #5 SCHAUMBURG TOWNSHIP DISTRICT LIBRARY NEXT GENEALOGY PROGRAM ON DECEMBER 13, 2016 Our next genealgy prgram will take place n Tuesday evening, December 13, We will have anther break-ut sessin fr ur gathering n December 13, Our previus attempts prved t be quite a gd success. I wuld like us t build n thse successes and affrd thse participants the pprtunity t meet with thse again r sample ther grups. After an initial intrductin f new participants at the start f ur nrmally scheduled meeting, we will establish ur breakut grups at apprximately 7:45 PM. We wuld have these breakut discussins frm abut 8:00 PM until abut 9:30 PM. These grups wuld cnsist f abut 7 t 8 participants. They wuld discuss sme cmmn tpic f genealgy that interests them r frm which they culd learn even mre t assist their research frm sharing with thers in the grup and learning frm thers within the grup. I saw many researchers ding this at ur last breakut sessin and they fund it very prductive t access internet infrmatin while being in ne f the grups if they wanted t shw smething t smene else at the table. Please remember that the grup s cmpsitin is based n the numbers that will participate. If nly ne persn is present t participate in the Plish grup, then we cannt have a Plish grup that evening. I cannt guarantee there will be enugh participants t frm a grup. 10 Handut #6 WHY YOUR FAMILY NAME WAS NOT CHANGED AT ELLIS ISLAND The fllwing was fund at Dick Eastman s Blg at dated Octber 13, The New Yrk Public Library is the latest rganizatin t publish an article abut the myth f the family name was changed at Ellis Island and then describes exactly ne exceptin. Almst every genealgy writer in the US, including myself, has written abut the myth befre. It is nice t see smene with the authrity and credentials f the New Yrk Public Library write abut it. Perhaps this fairy tale will nw be put t rest. The article by Philip Suttn says many things, including: There is a myth that persists in the field f genealgy, r mre accurately, in family lre, that family names were changed there. They were nt. Numerus blgs, essays, and bks have prven this. Yet the myth persists; a stry in a recent issue f The New Yrker suggests that it happened. This pst will explre hw and why names were nt changed. The article then humrusly ges n t describe ne exceptin. Despite the clarificatin f the name change myth, there was ne persn s whse name actually was changed at Ellis Island. Harry Zarief, the assistant cncert master fr Mrtn Guld, and famusly a father f quadruplets, had his name changed at Ellis Island frm Zarief t Friedman. The man nw named Harry Friedman apparently was nt happy with the name change. In 1944, HarryFriedman went t curt and btained a legal change f name, BACK TO ZARIEF! Cmments by Tny Kierna As ur library s genealgy crdinatr, I can t tell yu hw many times ver the years I have heard the stry while trying t help a researcher that his/her ancestr s name was changed upn arrival t the United States at Ellis Island!! As individuals, we like t hear these unique stries and we tend t believe them because why wuld ur family members lie t us abut what happened. The stries d sund gd, and when they are gd we just want t cntinue telling it t anyne that wants t hear it. Unfrtunately, the stries are nt true and this myth has been prven wrng time and time again ver the years. Yet it still lives n! Such stries embellish ur family histries and thrugh that prcess embellish each f us and individuals. The stries 10

11 just make us feel mre unique cmpared t ur fellw researchers that may nt have stries f name changes at Ellis Island. I highly recmmend reading the stry accessible within the link abve t the New Yrk Public Library blg pst. All yu have t realize is that the Ellis Island inspectrs NEVER wrte dwn the names f the individuals as they prcessed the immigrants. They were using the passenger lists supplied by the steamship cmpanies during immigrant prcessing. The names culd have been incrrect frm the start via the passenger list created by the steamship cmpanies in the varius prts f embarkatin used by the immigrants. If they left frm a prt that was part f their hme cuntry, it wuld appear t be difficult t get the names wrng because the language spken was a cmmn language in that prt city. If the immigrant frm Germany left via Bremen r Hamburg and went t Suthamptn, England fr the first leg f the jurney, ne culd imagine the passenger list created in Suthamptn culd have errrs because f the language differences there between steamship emplyees and immigrants. In fact, name changes yu have discvered in yur research were ften the result f the immigrant themselves making the name change fr the family s as t fit in mre with the American scial way f life and culture. Ellis Island inspectrs did nt make name changes! Perhaps yu knw the name f ancestr s surname at their pint f rigin and als as it is nw knwn within the family. Maybe there is a legal name change trail. Maybe nt. Yes, yu have discvered this name change between Pint A and B but yu cannt Carte Blanche identify the name change ccurred via the Ellis Island prcessing f the immigrant upn arrival. As a gd researcher it behves yu t dcument yur research as yu make yur discveries. Dn t blindly keep spreading the myth f yur ancestr s name change in light f what the prcess was at Ellis Island. A gd stry is hard t pass up, but a gd genealgy researcher sticks with the dcumented trail f evidence. 11

12 Handut #7 DNA S NEW MIRACLE: HOW ADOPTEES ARE USING ONLINE REGISTRIES TO FIND THEIR BLOOD RELATIVES The fllwing was fund in Dick Eastman s Online Blg at dated Octber 14, The Washingtn Pst has published an interesting article by Tara Bahrampur abut adptees using DNA t find their birth relatives, smetimes even their birth parents. But the rapidly expanding databases have als had an unintended cnsequence: They are helping peple find bilgical parents whse identities had lng been mysteries. The implicatins are wide-reaching. Fr adptees, birthparents, children f single mthers with unknwn fathers, and fathers unaware that they had a child, the answers t lifelng questins r the revelatins f clsely guarded secrets may nw pp up in inbxes withut warning. The technlgy can raise privacy cncerns and lead t emtinal cmplicatins. Sme adptees have fund bilgical relatives when they didn t set ut t. Yu can read this interesting stry at Cmments by Tny Kierna Genealgy researchers rutinely submit their DNA fr testing and sme have been shcked t make discveries that change their wrld. I use the example f Bill Grifffeth, famus CNBC Business News Anchr n The Clsing Bell financial shw. His brther tld him t submit his DNA fr testing just s they wuld have mre t wrk frm in their future genealgical research. He did. His results basically shwed that he did nt have the same Y DNA results he shuld have expected between himself and his brther. After much persnal turmil and further research, he was able t determine that the persn he knew f as his father was in fact nt his father. His mther wh was still alive at this time cnfirmed the stry t him and acknwledged wh his real father was. Adptees and genealgy researchers that determine that a particular ancestr was an adptee are als nw using the DNA prcess t make bld line discveries themselves. Adptees have a very difficult time ding genealgy research in the nrmal ways because s much f their ancestry has been legally made unavailable t them via the adptin prcess and curt-sealed dcuments f the time f adptins. S they nw see using the DNA submissin as a tl t pssibly help them make their bld line cnnectins. The genealgy researcher has t understand that these pssible bldline discveries d nt happen magically. Think f it like this. I am a general genealgy researcher that is ging t submit my DNA t a particular DNA prcessing cmpany. I may 12

13 have n idea wh my bilgical parents are r if I have siblings, r wrse yet, as in the case f Bill Griffeth abve, I think I knw wh my parents are and siblings are and I submit my DNA thinking all results were be uneventful. If I happen t have a different bilgical parent r have siblings I d nt even knw abut AND these unknwn parent r siblings als submitted their DNA t the same cmpany fr prcessing, then the results I receive fr my DNA will als list the cntact infrmatin fr a parent that matches t my DNA at a high level as well as siblings that match t me at a high level but a little lwer level than parents. Adptees see that it is wrth taking a DNA test t see if by luck they d receive high matches. Matches frm DNA prcessrs give us an idea hw clsely we are related t smene else. As an example, a 3 rd t 5 th cusin might shw me a centimrgan scale match f 80. A sibling might shw me a centimrgan scale match f A parent might shw me a centimrgan scale match f Once an adptee sees such high matches, they can assume that they may have matched bilgically t smene else that submitted their DNA at a very high level. The higher the centimrgan number, the mre yu can assume yu are matched t a parent r a sibling, and thus yu may have discvered a previusly unknwn parent r sibling. But all participants wuld have had t have their DNA submitted t the same cmpany. There are ways t braden yur testing results t see if yu match t thers within ther DNA testing cmpanies. There is a website called GEDmatch at that allws yu t take yur DNA results frm let s say Ancestry.cm and pst them within GEDmatch t see if yu match t anyne that may have submitted their results frm Family Tree DNA. But the key is that thse taking DNA tests have t actively put their results int GEDmatch t braden any matching results they may have genetically t thers that tested within a cmpany different frm the ne they submitted t. It makes perfect sense that adptees submit their DNA fr testing even if they are nt genealgical researchers because there is a pssibility they might btain results helping them better identify wh might actually be genetically related at a high level as parent r sibling. But it is still a slim chance t make these discveries simply because there may be nly 3 t 4 millin DNA submissins, mainly by genealgical researchers, in cmparisn t a ppulatin f ver 300 millin. The pl is simply nt yet large enugh t make the dds fr adptees t make these miraculus discveries n parents and siblings. Please be aware that if yu have nt yet submitted yur DNA fr genealgical purpses, if the day cmes when yu d submit, be aware that yu culd get sme unexpected results that culd be life changing t yu. S submit yur DNA, knw what can happen, and crss yur fingers! 13

14 Handut #8 HOW FINDAGRAVE COULD, AND SHOULD BE, MADE BETTER The fllwing was fund in Dick Eastman s Online Blg at dated Octber 21, Amy Jhnsn Crw has psted an article in her blg that illustrates ne f the prblems with FindAGrave and ffers suggestins fr hw it culd be better. If yu have an interest in FindAGrave, yu might want t read Amy s article, Hw FindAGrave Culd and Shuld Be Made Better, at: Cmment: FindAGrave s biggest cmpetitr, BillinGraves.cm, certainly is nt perfect. It has sme prblems f its wn but des nt share the prblems that Amy wrte abut. Fr ne thing, BillinGraves.cm starts with a picture f the tmbstne. N picture? N entry n BillinGraves.cm. Perhaps FindAGrave shuld adpt a similar plicy. Cmments by Tny Kierna Fr the vast majrity f genealgy researchers, we find that FindAGrave is an invaluable resurce fr us t find material nt nly abut the lcatin a persn is buried but als ften be able t see phts f the gravestne and much mre family infrmatin that is included in the memrial that is psted at FindAGrave. I am a cntributr t FindAGrave (have nt upladed any in the last few years) and initially upladed infrmatin and phts f gravestnes n sme f my ancestrs that are buried at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles, IL. Hwever, as the abve link t the article pints ut, there are many vlunteers wh just ram cemeteries and take phts f gravestnes and gravestne names and then uplad thse t FindAGrave. They have n idea wh it is fr whm they are uplading infrmatin. Als, many cntributrs just lk at their lcal bituaries that may be in lcal newspapers and als create memrials in FindAGrave fr that persn. Sunds like a nice thing fr us as researchers t be able t make these discveries in FindAGrave when it applies t ur ancestr r relative. Hwever, as the authr pints ut in the article, making a discvery f an bituary fr a father-in-law made her feel a little different since the bituary had nt even yet been printed in the newspaper when she discvered it already existed as she herself was ging t cntribute it t FindAGrave. In her cases, she was upset because she wanted t be able t d this herself. She is a prfessinal genealgist and has been invlved herself as a cntributr t FindAGrave. She cntacted the cntributr and discvered that the bituary gt psted s fast t FindAGrave because there are ften cntests ging n between cntributrs as t wh can uplad mre material faster and build up their numbers as cntributrs. The cntributr did transfer ver the memrial f this father-in-law withut any prblem. But the authr f the article still feels that FindAGrave shuld nt be a numbers game with death infrmatin and bituaries being upladed as if it were a cntest. 14

15 Her cmparisn t BillinGraves is that a pht f the gravestne is what triggers an entry int BillinGraves. That assumes there is sme time after the death f an individual when a family can create smething t enter int BillinGraves after a gravestne has been cmpleted and phtgraphed and upladed. With FindAGrave, all smene has t d is enter in death infrmatin and it becmes a part f FindAGrave with the persn entering it in becming the keeper f the memrial. The rub cmes in that maybe it wuld be nice if a family member were t create the memrial with infrmatin rather than a stranger. Fr that t happen with the death f a family member, mre time is required t d that rather than smene just finding an bituary nline and psting it because they just want t add numbers t their stats as a cntributr. This is just smething t think f if yu are a cntributr t FindAGrave. While it is nice that yu are uplading infrmatin perhaps n stranger t yu, just remember that there is a real family behind that death f a persn. Maybe wait a mnth befre yu enter in an bituary r death infrmatin n a ttal stranger. Maybe a family member wuld like t d it but nt within 12 hurs f the death f smene. The authr s article sure pened up my eyes t a cncern that family members have abut nt nly adding infrmatin t FindAGrave in their wn timeline but als t what they discver in FindAGrave s quickly after a death f their wn lved ne. FindAGrave shuld nt be a cntest f numbers f thse deceased that are strangers t yu unless a gd amunt f time has passed since their death and perhaps n family member has upladed infrmatin. 15

The authr f the article is Dave Obee. Dave always writes a nepage article n sme gd tpic in genealgy that he persnally relates t. This ne caught my eye because he lists his tp ten gripes when dealing with lking at his matches f individuals he receives frm his DNA testing prvider. I am sure we can all tell ur wn stries abut the things that gripe us when we are trying t help ut smene else that appears as ne f ur DNA matches. Here are his Tp 10 (in reverse rder): (10) The matches that are s clse. I already have these peple in my database. What they have nline is flawed s I whip ff an saying by h by, this is yur lucky day; lk at what I have fr yu! And they never get back t me. (9) The Ancestry matches that include a tree with 30,000 carefully researched (yeah, right) names. (One persn has several trees n the g; ttal cunt, mre than 100,000 relatives.) If I knew the reasn, I wuld knw whether I shuld bther writing again and again. (6) The GEDMatch cnnectin that is apparently a third cusin wh apparently lives less than tw hurs frm me.
