2 RWA Bristol's first art gallery The Drawing School can be found on the first floor of the RWA - a spectacular Grade II* listed building in the heart of the city. For 160 years, the RWA has been one of the region's leading centres for the exhibition, exploration and practice of the visual arts. As an Academy, the RWA has a broader role than solely being an art gallery to promote not just the appreciation and understanding of art, but also its practice. Find out more at rwa.org.uk 2 Welcome to the autumn programme, which is full of exciting courses and workshops to enhance your creative skills from September through to the end of the year! The RWA Drawing School offers both courses and workshops for participants of all stages and abilities, led by outstanding professional artist-tutors. Our 3, 5 and 10 week courses are perfect for those looking for a more in depth exploration of techniques and subject matter. This term we are pleased to offer two new 3-week courses Imaginative Watercolour (p7) and Botanical Art: Seasonal Treasures (p9), both of which celebrate the wonderful medium of watercolour but take very different approaches to achieve distinct effects. As well as the return of many favourite workshops, ranging from half days to 3 days, we have a fantastic selection of new classes. For those interested in figurative art, there s Life Drawing into Painting (p10), From Figure to Feather (p14), and Relief Modelling the Figure (p17). Those attracted to landscapes will be intrigued by Landscapes: Drawing to Monotype Printing (p11), and anyone fascinated by traditional techniques will appreciate Drawing Sacred Islamic Patterns (p14) and Gilding Techniques (p18). Loosen up with Experimental Print (p19), and explore word and image in Create a Graphic Short Story (p16). Old Master Techniques Francesca Berlingieri Maxwell Tuesdays, 10am 1pm 10 weeks 220 Starts 18 September From Caravaggio to Vermeer, to Toulouse-Lautrec, many painters have used tonal contrast to build depth and volume. The workshop will be underpinned by contemporary and historical drawing examples. Portraits in Oil Laurence Kell Saturday 29 September 10.30am 4.30pm and Sunday 30 September 11am-4pm 120 This workshop will take participants through a three stage process to produce an oil portrait from a live model. Advice will be given on drawing, mixing tone and mixing colours from direct observation of the model. Some previous experience of drawing and painting is necessary. Figuration to Abstraction Francesca Maxwell Sunday 7 October 11am 4pm 55 new Abstract or non-figurative art is the main current of modern art. One route to abstraction begins with drawing and painting subjects based from life, eventually moving away from concepts of perspective, gravity, naturalistic shapes and colours towards the abstract. Explore your imagination and creativity and discover your personal language of abstraction. During the day we will work on several compositions from more figurative to fully abstract using paper collage, pastels and acrylic paint. 8 Drawing Islamic Geometric Patterns Tom Bree Saturday 20 October 10.30am 4.30pm and Sunday 21 October 11am 4pm 115 The religion that is most closely associated with the use of geometry in its art is Islam. Beautiful patterns adorn mosques, palaces and Islamic schools to remind the Moslem that beauty is one of God's attributes. Study and draw some of the geometric patterns used in Islamic art and architecture, using the traditional drawing tools - compasses and ruler. No mathematical knowledge or religious involvement is required - just patience, application and a love of beauty. Drawing the Light: Erasure Techniques Helen Jones Half-day workshop Monday 22 October 10am 1pm 30 Erasure - a process of drawing with 'light' from a dark background - is an effective way of adding tone and depth to your work. In this new workshop, examine erasure techniques and their historic use when creating spectacular tonal drawings. Participants will undertake their own experiments and exercises to unlock this technique s potential, with the aim of improving observation and mark-making skills, before finally creating a multilayered landscape drawing. From Figure to Feather new new new Hannah Murgatroyd Half-day workshop Friday 26 October 10am 1pm 38 A very special class where participants will draw a majestic Indian Tawny Eagle and his handler in the studio. Extend your drawing range and flexibility to drawing an unpredictable subject. All drawing levels welcome, from practicing artists to beginners willing to jump in and have a go. Paired Life Drawing Hannah Murgatroyd Half-day workshop Friday 26 October 2pm 5pm 30 A fantastic opportunity to draw from two experienced models, a man and a woman.
