This course will cover everything you need to get you started, from preparing your artwork for print and getting your image onto a screen using the photo-stencil technique, to printing and registration, using water-based inks. Explore this diverse medium in a friendly learning environment using our excellent facilities. 2 FURTHER INFO // Screen printing is a highly versatile technique that allows an endless variety of marks to be printed from bold solid areas of colour, delicate line drawings, text and photographic images. This printmaking method involves creating a stencil on a screen. This is a fine-mesh fabric stretched taut over a frame through which ink is then forced resulting in a print. This course offers an introduction to water-based screen printing. Artwork preparation You will learn about the various methods of transferring images to a screen. These include using simple cut paper stencils, hand drawn images & mark-making, and photocopied or digitally printed images onto acetate. Preparation of screen You will then learn the methods involved in preparing a screen for printing. This will include coating a screen with light-sensitive emulsion, exposing your imagery to it using ultra-violet light, and developing with water. Printing You will learn how to print, mix inks and registration techniques You will then have the opportunity to print a small edition using several colours onto paper. Materials Provided - Acrylic paints - True-grain drawing film - Acrylic printing medium - Acetate - Paper - Chinagraph pencils / Indian ink / brushes WHAT TO BRING // Please bring with you any images that you would like to develop into print. These can be any artwork, drawings, patterns, textures, photographs, etc. They need to be photocopied in black & white onto an acetate sheet. The darker and blacker the print the better. Light

3 grainy photocopies will produce poor results. A separate acetate is required for each colour you wish to print. As a simple example, a 2 colour flower image requires 2 separate acetates. One acetate for the stem and a second acetate just showing the flower head. There is a photocopier at the print workshop which you can use, however if you are able to get these done elsewhere beforehand then this would obviously save you time on the day. Another option is to just copy your images onto regular photocopier paper instead. Again, the blacker and heavier the copy the better, (it is important here to just use normal printer paper and not a heavier weight photo type paper which would be too thick). Alternatively you may wish to produce some hand-drawn artwork on the day using various media including Indian ink, black acrylic, chinagraph pencils, etc, onto a transparent film. We suggest that you produce A4 sized acetates as this is a nice manageable size to work with. But we do have larger screens to take A3 also, so this is still an option if you have something particular in mind this size. All materials are included in the course fee. (There is the option of purchasing quality If you wish). If you can, it would also be useful to bring the following with you: Pencil, ruler and notebook Apron Glasses! (If you need them!) 4 GENERAL // On arrival please ring the bell and wait for someone to answer. You ll need to sign in, and let a member of staff know which course you are on, so that they can show you where to go. Please try to arrive around 10 minutes early for each day of the course, so that the tutor can go through health and safety and domestic arrangements with you, and to ensure the course can start promptly. If you arrive any earlier than this you re free to make a brew and have a look around the gallery, but please be aware that the tutor will be preparing for the course during this time. Please bear in mind that one of the main objectives of our courses is for those attending to learn a skill, rather than to create a masterpiece. Most of our courses are designed to give you a good understanding of the technical processes involved in making a print, so that you can start practicing the techniques yourself, either in the workshops here, or elsewhere. We will guide you wherever possible about what sort of imagery will be best to use, but often it isn t until you learn a process that you can decide what sort of images will work best, or suit that particular technique. If you have any specific questions before the course then please feel free to get in touch. Similarly if you have any specific questions or issues during the course, please make sure you ask the tutor that is what they are there for, and they re always happy to help! It is a good idea to wear old clothing and / or an apron. (If you don t have your own we have some here). Long hair should be tied back, and avoid wearing loose jewellery like bracelets or scarves which could get trapped or tangled in machinery and equipment. There is a member s kitchen area with tea and coffee making facilities, (for which we ask for a small donation), a microwave, toaster and fridge. You are welcome to bring your own lunch with you, or there are local bakeries and shops for you to purchase food.

5 Please let us know prior to the course if you have any special requirements or access needs, or if you suffer from any condition which we should be aware of. Parking on the road outside the workshop is limited to 1 hour between 8am and 6pm Monday - Saturday but is unlimited outside of these times. Free 24 hour parking is available in the car park directly behind and across the road from Mirfield Library (where the recycling bins are). Please note that parking in the Co-op and Lidl car parks is now limited to 2 hours maximum. Warning: although we minimise the use of certain chemicals, some techniques may involve the use of agents which require wearing personal protective equipment such as mask and gloves. If you have any known allergies to any substances please let us know. This course is not advisable for pregnant women.
