Role SB: Artwork and Question of the Day o Day 1: iphone ad Touching is believing. for the iphone touch What is this advertisement trying to communicate? o Day 2: Honda Odyssey ad The Van of your Dreams What is this advertisement trying to communicate? Finish: Review & Post Assessment / Q of the Day / Points Review Questions o Day 1: What are the five types of commercial art careers that we discussed today? What are the four rules (for beginners) of designing a print advertisement? o Day 2: Post Assessment (written test) SB: Artwork and Question of the Day Points Lesson Plans Day 1 Objective / Pre-Assessment (Hook) / Prior Knowledge SB: Today we will continue our career unit and make an advertisement for our company. SB: Review 5 careers by using the previously viewed logos. SB: What is an advertisement? / What is the purpose of an advertisement? Intro to Project / Where to Start SB: Now that we have made our company s logo, we are going to advertise our company by making a print advertisement. Here are some advertisements that go with the company logos we looked at last week. *Notice how the logo represents the products* o Industrial Design Ads: Apple (movement, modern, fun) o Interior Design: Isaac Mizrahi for Target (bold colors) o Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright (geometric buildings) o Fashion Design: Chanel - casual chic (smart / stylish) as a feminine standard 2

3 SB: Layout for Beginners (reasons / example) SB: Advertisement Rules for Designing your own o margin invisible line at bottom to line up headline and logo o visual main image and main part of ad o headline most impact on layout, visual weight, below or to the side of visual o logo small and in bottom right corner SB: Teacher Sample reviews requirements and steps Demonstration or Modeling and Materials Part 1: Sketch Paper o Step 1: Name and Table on back o Step 2: Career, Company, Descrption (just like logo) o Step 3: At least 2 sketches for advertisement. Review the final 4 papers they will turn in at the end. Review which paper is used for each step. Lesson Plans Day 2 Review of Project (Sample, Objective, Materials, Art Techniques, Requirements) SB: Review careers SB: Review advertisement design for beginners SB: Review project requirements and remind them everything is due today (all 4 papers) Demonstration or Modeling and Materials Part 2: Final Advertisement o Step 1: Name and Table on back. o Step 2: Optional margin using ruler. o Step 3: Lightly draw the advertisement in pencil so you can erase mistakes. o Step 4: Go over with markers and/or colored pencils. You can use any colors. Show students the four papers that are due and how to turn them in. 3

4 Assessments: Knowledge and Skill Assessment Knowledge Assessment: Student is able to describe and discuss five commercial art careers: o industrial design o interior design o fashion design o architect o graphic design define advertisement Student understands that all art careers still use the basic elements of art and principals of design using the advertisement rules makes a difference in how it is perceived by the public Skill Assessment: Student is able to draw a visual with pencil, markers, and/ or colored pencils write a headline in own font reproduce smaller version of logo use a ruler for straight lines and optional margin Project Requirements Project Requirements: Students must Reflection: include on the top of the scrap paper and the back of the final: o career o company name o company description preliminary sketches on scrap paper (at least two different ideas) final advertisement of company on 9 x 12 that uses advertisement rules o margin (optional) o visual (top or side) o headline (under or to the side of visual) company name or slogan o logo (bottom right) The advertisement part of this unit was too advanced for 5 th grade. I think it is better for the secondary level. No student really mastered it: they either didn t follow he layout rules or the visual and headline lost track of the company and career it was representing. The logo lesson was much more successful and enough to cover the career objective. No matter how many reminders, most students still put the headline on the top. If done again, students need to also see a teacher sample of an ad in landscape view where the visual and headline are next to each other. Students need to be able to see a list in the classroom of product examples for each career. Some students did very well on the post assessment but not on the advertisement. That tells me they understand the concepts but would not or could not apply them. 4
