Essential Question: How can designers and artists use the element line in various art careers? How can line be used in logos? How does a logo represent a company? What would a logo look like for the following careers: Fashion Design,, Interior Design, Architecture Materials & Supplies: Day 1 scrap paper 5.5 x 8.5 rulers pencils Day 2 white paper 6 x 6 rulers circle stencils (3.5 diameter) pencils markers (thick and thin) colored pencils (for more colors) Vocabulary: industrial or product designer designs products such as cars, electronics, furniture, and other manufactured products using computer-assisted design technology fashion designer designs and makes clothing based on the latest trends and customer preferences architect designs spaces where people live, work, play, and worship; final product is a 1

2 building graphic designer takes ideas and concepts from business people and translates them into images for the public; work can be websites, magazines, logos, signage, greeting cards interior designer designs the inside of homes, offices, business centers, department stores, churches and other structures line characteristics: straight/curved, thick/thin, long/short, vertical/horizontal/diagonal line variations: zig-zag, dotted, wavy, spiral logo a graphic representation, name, or symbol of a company uniquely designed for easy recognition Prep Work: Cut nice white paper down to 6 x 6 Cut regular 8.5 x 11 printer or scrap paper in half to make 5.5 x 8.5 Start: Daily Greet / Role / A & Q of the Day / Announcements Greet teacher and students at door. o When the door closes there is no talking or you will lose your point Greet class from front table. SB: Artwork and Question of the Day Points Lesson Plans Day 1 Objective / Pre-Assessment (Hook) / Prior Knowledge SB: Today we will learn about commercial art careers, lines, and logos. SB: Pre-Assessment o Read the test to them out loud before passing it out. o SB: Put on the word bank slide (only days 3,4,5) o Pass out tests and students go get pencils. o Bring the tests to the front when you are done. Cabinet Wall go over careers using posters (answers to pre-assessment). o Tell students to think about which career they like or connect to the most because they will be creating a company, designing a logo, and making an advertisement. Intro to Project / Where to Start SB: Now we will compare and contrast lines used in company logos (acts as prior knowledge). What type of designer would create logos? Graphic Designer variations from straight: zig-zag, dotted, spiral, wavy characteristics: straight/curved, thick/thin, long/short, vertical/horizontal/diagonal 2

3 o : Apple mac computer, i-pod, i-pad, i-phone) Logo 1 st logo: Newton A Mind Forever Voyaging Through Strange Seas of Thought Alone. Isaac Newton physicist and mathematician regarded as one of the most influential scientists of all time Newton Story: Newton was sitting under an apple tree, an apple fell on his head, and he suddenly thought of the Universal Law of Gravitation o Interior Design: Isaac Mizrahi American fashion designer Logo teamed up with Target in Logo colors resemble colors in his home furnishing collections at Target o Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright American architect known for designing structures that were in harmony with their environment (organic architecture) Logo to him, red was the color of creation (life giving color); his building have a lot of geometric shapes (hence square logo) o Fashion Design: Coco Chanel - French fashion designer credited with liberating women from the corset look and popularizing casual chic (smart / stylish) as a feminine standard Logo her initials; casual chic o What type of art career designed all of those logos? Graphic Design o Can a graphic design company have a logo? Yes, but we will only be creating logos for, Interior Design, Architect, and Fashion Design SB: Logo Rules for Designing your own Demonstration or Modeling and Materials SB: Logo Sketches o Step 1: Name and table on back. o Step 2: Top front: Career, Company Name, Description of company designs o Step 3: Sketch AT LEAST two ideas. Explain the different between sketching an idea versus drawing a nice visual o Step 4: Demonstrate how to incorporate rulers and circle stencils if they want. Pass out paper. Students get rulers and pencils. Lesson Plans Day 2 Review of Project (Sample, Objective, Materials, Art Techniques, Requirements) Review careers using logos. Review logo rules. Demonstration or Modeling and Materials Final Logo 6 x 6 paper Step 1: On the back: Name, Table, Career, Company Name, Company Description Step 2: Draw your final logo in pencil. Use rulers for straight lines. Step 3: Finalize it with markers and/or colored pencils. 3

4 Assessments: Project Requirements Project Requirements: Students must include on the top of the scrap paper and the back of the final: o career (, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Architect) o company name o company description at least two preliminary sketches on scrap paper final logo on 6 x 6 that uses five logo rules o represents the organization/subject/product o simple design o limited number of colors (1-4) o recognizable printed in black and white o original / unique font Knowledge and Skill Assessment Knowledge Assessment: Student is able to describe and discuss five commercial art careers: o industrial design, interior design, fashion design, architect, graphic design compare and contrast line in various artworks (in this case logos) define logo Student understands that all art careers still use the basic elements of art and principals of design using the logo rules makes a difference in how it is perceived by the public Skill Assessment: Student is able to create a logo based on the logo rules Reflection: The students really seemed to like and understand this logo lesson. I think it was a good project for the career unit. In the future I would not have students choose a company for Graphic Design. The concept of having a graphic design company was confusing. They can still understand the concept of graphic design because they are acting as graphic designers when they do the logo. Students were also confused about the products that industrial designers and the other careers actually design. I would make a chart with pictures and words to show what each career designs. Most students kept thinking that ers only designed electronics. Interior design was also confusing to some, but not as difficult. 4

5 Independen ce in Work Class Performance & Creativity Achievement & Craftsmanship Rubric: 5 th Grade Career Logo S+ S S- N -mastery of the company strongly reflects one art career: Fashion Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Architecture, logo follows all 5 rules: represents company and career, no more than 4 colors, simple design (not too much detail or images), recognizable in black and white, and original / unique font at least two preliminary sketches on scrap paper -superior level of logo is drawn and colored neatly words, images, or letters are easy to read and understand -fully participates and demonstrates effort in all -exhibits originality and creativity in thinking, expression, and work products; takes risks to discover -is self-directed -assumes responsibility for behavior and assignments -adequately meets company reflects one art career: Fashion Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Architecture, logo follows all 5 rules: represents company and career, no more than 4 colors, simple design (not too much detail or images), recognizable in black and white, and original / unique font at least two preliminary sketches on scrap paper - sufficient -willingly participates and demonstrates effort in -exhibits average creativity in thinking, expression, and work products; does not take any risks -is self-directed -occasionally requires individual attention -falls short of meeting objectives; needs teacher support, more time, and assistance to meet most of the company has trouble reflecting one of the art careers: Fashion Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Architecture, logo follows some rules none or one preliminary sketch on scrap paper -falls below the average level of -inconsistently participates and demonstrates effort in -no originality and lack of creativity in thinking, expression, and work products -frequently requires individual attention -has difficulty meeting objectives at this time, even when teacher support or extra time to learn is given: company has no relationship to an art career logo does not follow any rules no sketches -poor -consistently requires teacher direction and encouragement to participate in -demonstrates little effort in -consistently requires teacher direction and encouragement to complete tasks 5
