1 Unit 5: Choice Projects & End of Year Art III 1 Grade: Time Allotted: 8th 9 weeks Unit Introduction: This unit focuses on students developing a style and purpose in their artwork. They will have freedom to choose from various media and project ideas to explore their individual style. They will also reflect upon the decisions they made as artists and present their work to peers. In addition, students will demonstrate proper museum etiquette and discuss works of art while attending a museum exhibit. Individual Lesson Topics/Focus: Project Options and Focus o Drawing Realistic or abstract approach/ use of various materials. o Painting Realistic or abstract approach/ use of various materials. o Multi-media o Sculpture look at works by Calder, Oldenburg, Chihuly, and others for inspiration/ use of various media o Printmaking introduction to wood carving/ multi-colored prints o Book-making o Journaling Focus on what is seen/art as an outlet Presentation of Art Works Museum Visit and Discussion Peer critiques/walk-through Artist s Statements Self-reflections of finished projects Media and Tools/ Usage and Cleanup Unit Objectives: Students will be able to: -reflect his/her own artist statement while using various media and processes -use learned vocabulary and observation skills to create works of art -practice using the elements and principles in their own works of art -understand the purposes, advantages, and disadvantages of using various media and tools -reflect on the use of various media and techniques throughout history -practice techniques in a variety of projects to improve observation skills and planning skills -work together respectfully with classmates to create successful works of art -reflect on the emergence of any particular styles that set each student s artwork apart from others -demonstrate proper use and cleanup of materials and tools Unit Standards: (Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills, grade 8) 1:1 Identify and apply knowledge of the principles of design in personal artwork and the artwork of others 1:2 Identify and apply the elements of art in works of art. 1:3 Compare and contrast works which are similar or different in expressive quality, composition, and style.
2 2 1:4 Discuss works of art of different media and styles beyond statements of mere preference. 2:2 Explain the purpose of visual art and artists in history and culture. 2:3 Identify how visual art is used by artists in today s world, including the popular media of advertising, television, and film (e.g. illustrator, fashion designer, sculptor, display designer, painter, graphic designer, animator, photographer). 2:4 Identify the relationship that exists between visual art and other art forms such as music, dance, drama. 3:1 Use observation, memory, and imagination in making original works o art. 3:2 Assess and modify art work in progress based on an understanding of art materials and techniques. 3:3 Demonstrate safe and proper use, care, and storage of media, materials, and equipment. 3:4 Depict three-dimensional qualities by overlapping planes, vertical position, size, and color intensity in original artwork. 3:5 Develop and apply skills and techniques using a variety of art media and processes in making two- and three- dimensional works of art. 4:2 Demonstrate respect for personal artwork and the artwork of others. 4:3 Demonstrate thoughtfulness and care in completion of artworks. 4 Bell work Criteria 4 Each day, students will spend 5 minutes drawing or writing in their sketchbooks. They are to treat their sketchbooks like a visual journal. After this 5 minute bell work time, students may quietly retrieve projects and supplies for the day s work. This time period will be classified as the 10 minute Silent Start. Sequence of Events: Week 28 (03/05-03/09) M F Continue Wall Murals from previous unit. Complete Artist Statement and Group Evaluations. Week 29 (03/12-03/16): M F Begin Choice Projects. Students must complete 4-8 projects within the allotted time (depending on complexity of projects). Artist Statements will be written for each. A list of media options will be given to students. Students will be able to choose their media, techniques, and subject matter to best reflect their own style and interests. Spring Break March Week 30 (03/26-03/30): M - Th Continue Choice Projects. F Holiday. No School. Week 31 (04/02-04/06): M Th Continue Choice Projects F No School. Professional development day for teachers. Week 32 (04/09-04/13): M Th Continue Choice Projects. Week 33 (04/16-04/20): M Th Presentation of Works. Students will present their completed choice projects to their peers for discussion. They will discuss what they learned, emergence of style, reasons for subject and media choice. Peers will give feedback.
5 Week 34 (04/23-04/27): M W - Art Show Preparations. Begin clean-up of room for Art Show. Have students choose up to 2 works to display. Take all other works home. Begin hanging/displaying artworks. Make posters to direct guests. Design signs for halls. Also begin discussing museum etiquette and trip details for next week. Th Finishing touches on Art Show. Students will help guests through display. 5 Week 35 (04/30-05/04): M Discuss Museum Trip. T Dallas Museum of Art Field Trip. W Discuss what was seen at museum. Discuss museum assignment. Th Begin making kites from straws and tissue papers. Based on mathematical design. Week 36 (04/07-04/11): M T- Continue kites. W Possible free day depending on behavior and cleanliness of room. If not, students will clean room then have gesture drawing day. Th Last day for students. F Teacher Work Day.
