You are about to embark on an exciting expedition into the geological unknown. Your mission is to design an invention WHICH WILL solve a geological concern relevant to our community. Names of the Inventors in your Group and color fonts: Part 1: Innovating and Idea and Blueprint Week #1: Brainstorm 2-3 geological problems with your group. List and define any key terminology used here Important: Note any reference materials that you used here. Websites: Note the url and the title of the page Books: Note the title of the book and page number. Magazines: Note the name of the magazine; month/year; title of article; and page number.

References: Week #2: Determine which geological concern (G.C.) your group will solve with a new and unique invention. Explain this G.C. in great detail with specific terminology relevant to your G.C. Define any key terminology used. Note why your group found this to be an important G.C. problem to solve. A. Your group s chosen G.C: B. Brainstorm 2-3 invention ideas that could realistically solve your group s G.C. Be specific in your explanation. Define any key terminology that you use. Describe any benefits and any drawbacks of your invention. Note any additional uses that your invention may have beyond the original G.C. Note the costs involved in creating your invention Week #3: Choose an invention from Week #3 to pursue with your group. A. Explain why you feel this was the most worthwhile of the inventions you brainstormed to

pursue. What were its greatest advantages and/or benefits? Give your invention a clever title. Clever Title: Explanation: B. Begin drafting a rough sketch of your blueprint. This first draft should be sketched lightly in pencil. Work neatly using an eraser and ruler. Remember to draw in proper scale and label all parts neatly in order to give the observer a clear understanding of your invention s function, parts, and usage. Create a key to interpret any symbols used on the blueprint. C. After your rough sketch is approved, begin your final blueprint and include all elements that were approved on your first draft. Remember to work neatly in pencil, using a ruler. Label all parts. Get your final blueprint approved before outlining it with a fine tip black sharpee. Remember to include the title of your invention and the name of its inventors in a corner of the blueprint.

Part 2: Designing your Geological Magazine Cover Week #4: Design a rough sketch of the cover of an imaginary geological magazine that will announce and advertise your new invention to the world. Your cover should be creative, colorful, graphic, and appealing to the reader. It should catch the readers eye from off the newsstand. Include the following elements on the rough draft of your cover: Clever Title of Magazine Clever Title of Article An Image: The image can be of your invention or the problem that spurred your invention. The image may incorporate pictures of celebrities, politicians, or scientists endorsing your product. Digital or hand drawn images are acceptable. A brief blurb that entices the reader to want to read more about your invention: Will erosion affect the resale value of your home? Learn about a unique invention that may save you thousands of dollars today!! All of the above must be approved by your teacher before proceeding to the task in week #5. Week #5: Create an over-sized design of your magazine cover, incorporating all of the elements of your draft onto a poster sized foam board. Work neatly using clip art images, pictures, etc. Print up all text using Microsoft Word and neatly glue on the board. Do not glue anything down until your team of inventors are all satisfied with the layout and you have gained final approval from your teacher. Use a glue stick or rubber cement. Do not use Elmer s glue.

Part 3: Writing your Magazine Article Week #6: Compose a persuasive essay about the benefits and advantages of your G.C. invention. This should be written as a magazine article that will appear on the flip side of your foam board. Your article should clearly define the G.C; incorporating a sharp distinct focus; and a precise usage of words and grammar. (See the rubric). A. Compose your rough draft right here. Make any corrections noted by your teacher before printing. (Do not proceed to the final task from Week #7 until your article has gained final approval from your teacher, the editor in chief.)

Week #7: Design the layout for the back of your poster board. This is like the inside of your magazine. It should include your article, your blueprint, and 2-3 images that are relevant to your invention. Do not glue anything down until your group is satisfied with the placement of all elements and you have received final approval from your teacher. Use a glue stick or rubber cement. Please, do not use Elmer s glue. Please, review all elements of your project before turning it in to your teacher.
