Calallen Middle School Pre-Advanced Placement and GT/Horizon Program 7 th Grade Summer Reading Assignment White Fang By Jack London Unabridged version (DO NOT read the version for small children.) Teachers: Mrs. Lamb and Ms. Smith DUE DATE: SECOND DAY OF SCHOOL No late assignments will be accepted.
May 2017 Dear Incoming 7 th Grade Pre-AP and GT/Horizon Students and Parents, One of the purposes of the Calallen ISD Pre-AP and Horizon Reading program is to provide a quality educational background for students, so they can be more successful in their high school English Pre-AP and AP courses and exams. An important way to help students do well on an AP exam is to provide opportunities for them to develop an extensive repertoire of literature. As the push for educational excellence intensifies in all disciplines, building a good literary-based background ensures that more students make a high enough score on the AP exam to possibly place out of some college courses. We are requiring that all incoming 7 th Grade PreAP and GT/Horizon Reading students complete a summer reading assignment. The students will read White Fang by Jack London. (Unabridged) Complete a Scrapbook Project. Instructions and Rubric are attached. (MAJOR GRADE) Complete the Short Answer Questions on the worksheet for your Reading class. Complete the Pre-AP Writing worksheet for your Writing class. The assignment is due the SECOND DAY OF SCHOOL. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. A test over the novel will be administered at the beginning of the school year. We hope that you and your student will look upon this as a great opportunity to enrich your lives through good reading and as preparation for future successes. We look forward to working with you in the upcoming school year! Sincerely, Mrs. Shelley Lamb & Ms. Jennifer Smith 7 th Grade Pre-AP & Horizon Reading Teachers
Due Date: 2 nd Day of School Turn in this assignment to your READING teacher. White Fang Reading Questions 1) Of Bill and Henry, who was the optimist and who was the pessimist? How did their personality traits relate to their survival? 2) How did the wolf pack prove to be tenacious? 3) Explain two problem-solving techniques the men used against the wolves. 4) How did the men explain why the she-wolf was able to mingle with their dogs without a commotion?
5) Explain the LAW OF MEAT (code of survival) as learned by the cub. Why was it important to the survival of the animals NOT to think about the law? 6) Explain how White Fang was hurt physically and psychologically by his first experience with fire. 7) Explain what the following quote meant to the dogs: The man-animals were gods unmistakable and inescapable. 8) Why was White Fang hated by man and by other dogs? 9) Explain the terms of the covenant (agreement) between dog and man.
PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS Due Date: 2 nd Day of School Turn in this assignment to your READING teacher. Review the character attributes of White Fang, Gray Beaver, Beauty Smith, and Weedon Scott. Create two (2) pages of White Fang s scrapbook. The scrapbook will contain snapshots and journal entries written from White Fang s point of view and chronicle important events he experienced with his three masters. This assignment will be evaluated as a major grade using the rubric provided. Follow these guidelines: Use two (2) 12 x 12 pages to create four (4) scrapbook pages. Bind the pages together to make a scrapbook. Snapshots should be pictures or drawings approximately 4 x 4 in size. They may be hand-drawn, computer-generated, or cut from magazines. A journal entry is 3-4 sentences written about a snapshot that describes the incident, the master s behavior or attitude, and White Fang s feelings or memory of the event. It is written from White Fang s point of view and shows elements of his character. Use the first page as a title page, the two middle pages for pictures and journaling, and the back page for your name, class, and date. Follow the tips and suggestions for a good quality product. Be creative! As an option, you may create this project on the computer using an appropriate program. Please follow all directions. The project may be ed or turned in on USB drive.
White Fang s Scrapbook Rubric CONTENT 6 Journal Entries (30 points) White Fang s point of view 3-4 sentences Typed, printed or written neatly in cursive Grammar/Spelling/Punctuation 6 Snapshots depicting White Fang and/or masters (30 points) White Fang and/or masters Situation from novel Correspond with journal entries 4 x 4 color or black and white CONSTRUCTION Creativity White Fang s voice apparent in journal entries (20 points) Detailed and appropriate snapshots relate to novel Appropriate and imaginative cover design and title Imaginative use of a variety of materials Appearance Neatness in writing journal entries (20 points) Straight lines; no stray pencil marks 12 x 12 size Balanced and symmetrical layout and pages Use of black pen for writing and outlining
Tips for a Good Product Make snapshots 4 x 4 in size. Use map colors or fine-point, water-based markers to color handdrawn pictures or colorize black and white copied pictures. Use pencil shading for a black and white effect. Be consistent. All pictures should be of the same format. Pencil drawings should be outlined with a fine-point black ink pen. Use a ruler or ruled paper for journaling or type entries. Hand-written entries should be in black ink. Write rough drafts of journal entries; proofread carefully! Use bold stenciled, printed, or press-on lettering for titles on pages. Use a glue stick instead of liquid glue to assemble the scrapbook pages. Scrapbook pages should be balanced and symmetrical. Erase all stray pencil marks. Choose from a variety of embellishments to decorate the pages such as stencils, stickers, rubber stamps, cut paper, press-on letters, borders, photo corners, clip-art, fabric, etc. Be neat! Be creative! Be original!
Name: Writing Period: White Fang -- Summer Assignment for Pre-AP Writing IMPORTANT: Each answer on this sheet must be in complete sentences, in your own words, and legible. Turn in to your Pre-AP writing teacher by the second day of class. The theme of nature vs. nurture is an important one in Jack London s White Fang. Before you read the novel, do a brief search for the nature vs. nurture debate as a theme in literature. In the space below, explain what you think that the nature vs. nurture theme is about. As you read the novel, consider how White Fang changes throughout the story. What characteristics are result of his heritage? How is his behavior changed by his experiences and by the way he is treated by other dogs and by his different masters? What characteristics did White Fang inherit from his parents? What was the most basic instinct that guided White Fang in the beginning of the novel? Who was White Fang s first master, and what was he like? How was White Fang treated by this master? What did White Fang learn during this time with this master? How did he change? Who was White Fang s second master, and what was he like?
How was White Fang treated by this master? What did White Fang learn during this time with this master? How did he change? Who was White Fang s last master and what was he like? How was White Fang treated by this master? What did White Fang learn during this time with this master? How did he change? Nature vs. Nurture: After reading the novel, which viewpoint do you believe that Jack London would most likely support? Support your statement with at least one example from the last part of the novel. 1. One s character is primarily determined by one s heritage and natural instinct. 2. The way one is treated has a greater influence on one s character than their heritage.
