1 Page 1 of 7 SEP Carnival (Science and Engineering Practices) Problem: You and your group will design a working carnival game to explore the major practices that scientists and engineers use to investigate the world and design and build systems. Supplies to think about: Note: Some materials may be available in the classroom in limited supply Marbles Tennis balls Ping pong balls PVC pipe pieces Rubber bands Popsicle sticks Magnetic tape Constraints Mini marshmallows Paper plates Paper bowls Plastic spoons Plastic cups Paper clips Small bags, such as plastic or organza Uncooked rice String Pennies Know the constraints for the assigned game you will design Only recycled materials allowed to be used from home (i.e. cereal boxes, paper towel rolls, unused plastic materials, old game parts) No glass No motored or electronic circuits or 3D printed objects Unless stated and/or approved, all games must be free-standing and fit on EITHER a single desk table or on a single lab table. Procedures: 1. On paper provided, with your group, brainstorm a design for your assigned working carnival game. Make sure all information below is clearly written and complete. a. Identify the problem and the constraints. b. Then, sketch out your initial design. Keep in mind the available class materials and the recycled materials you can bring from home on the first day you begin to build. c. Label the materials you are going to use AND how you will use them.

2 Page 2 of 7 d. Explain how each person in your group will contribute to the building of the game, including testing the game and modifying it so it consistently works. (see #2 below) e. Explain the goal of the game. f. Record the name of your game. 2. Once your carnival game is built, describe how you had to modify your game to allow for successful play, or in other words, the final design that allowed for consistent play without repair being needed. a. Explain how success of the final design by describing how many times you played the game to test it as well as the outcomes of each tests. (It is recommended you complete this in a data table. Ask your teacher for guidance.) Timeline Day Goals for the day 1 Brainstorm initial design and sketch; label materials used; explain how each member will contribute to the building of the carnival game; record how to play the game as well as the name 2 Build initial design and test. Record observations- how successful in the game and what modifications you ll make 3 Redesign and retest. Record observations- how successful in the game and what modifications you ll make 4 Finish final designs and testing to make sure it is good working condition. Record observations- how successful in the game and what modifications you ve made 5 SEP Carnival Day and peer review! Provide feedback on the design and working order of each game as you play them Describe one aspect of the game you really enjoyed and why. (If you plan to write something like, it was fun, state what made the game fun.) Rate the overall success of the game

3 Page 3 of 7 Use this rubric as a checklist to identify if all parts of the SEP Carnival activity have been completed successfully. 2- Requirement is clear and complete.
