Your project must grab the attention of the judges and the public. If not, all of your hard work will not be noticed. Your display must yell, Look at me! 1

SCIENCE FAIR CHECKLIST PROJECT CHOSEN AND RESEARCHED EXPERIMENT MATERIALS GATHERED EXPERIMENT EXECUTED DATA GATHERED FROM EXPERIMENT SCIENTIFIC PAPER AND ORAL PRESENTATION COMPLETED WHAT S NEXT? You have already done an incredible amount of work..... [read slide] 2

JUST THE BEST PART.... [read slide] 3

PART... OF COURSE [read slide] 4

YOU ARE NOT JUST A STUDENT / SCIENTIST, BUT ALSO A.... [read slide] 5

GRAPHIC DESIGN SIGN PAINTER TITLE DESIGNER POSTER ARTIST LAYOUT DESIGNER ILLUSTRATOR LETTERER CALLIGRAPHER Graphic design is defined as... artwork in which letter forms (writing, typography) are important and carefully placed visual elements. The field of graphic design has many specialties... [read slide] 6

PUBLICAITON DESIGN BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATOR CARTOGRAPHER CHART ARTIST INDUSTRIAL ILLUSTRATOR MEDICAL ILLUSTRATOR PHOTOGRAPHER SCIENCE ILLUSTRATOR TECHNICAL ILLUSTRATOR A specific type of graphic design is Publication Design. Think newspapers, magazines, books and increasingly the World Wide Web. These artists are responsible for creating attractive, well organized publications. Notice the specific types of illustrators...an illustrator is an artist who creates pictures to explain a point; to show an important part of a story; or to add decoration to a book, magazine or other printed work. A medical illustrator draws or creates extremely detailed and accurate images of the human body for doctors to use in the treatment of patients. 7

ANIMAL PHOTOGRAPHER PHOTOGRAPHY BIOLOGICAL PHOTOGRAPHER INDUSTRIAL PHOTOGRAPHER MEDICAL PHOTOGRAPHER Photography is an integral part of today s world of graphic design. Photographs capture a moment in time, an event and in your case an important step or part of your project. Good photography is more than just point and shoot... Its good composition or how well the subject of the photograph was captured lighting and exposure, scale, detail, context... Good composition or arrangement is a part of good Layout... 8

Layout A layout is the arrangement of type and art (photos, illustrations or any other graphic you might have). A Good Layout... [read slide], then... A good layout 9

A Good Layout... Attracts: Grabs the viewer s attention and pulls them into your piece Organizes: Maps out a visual path for readers to follow shows what comes first, second, third, etc. Works: Does what you set out to do. [read slide], Attracts..., Organizes..., Works..., Hmmm what is it that you set out to do? Hopefully, it was to demonstrate a working knowledge of the scientific method? Right? 10

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE BY NOW! OR CLOSE PURPOSE HYPOTHESIS BACKGROUND/RESEARCH ABSTRACT MATERIALS & PROCEDURES DATA: TABLES, GRAPHS, PICS RESULTS AND DISCUSSION CONCLUSION ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS At this point, it is time to seriously start thinking about how to display all that hard work. Hopefully, you have some ideas... If not then... 11

What do I have to do first...? 12

1 Examine or study your project to find parts/pieces or elements to create a SINGLE UNIFYING VISUAL THEME A good layout... organizes This means look at everything that you did in your project... From the little parts to the big picture. You are trying to find that thing that will tie it all together visually. 13

SINGLE UNIFYING VISUAL THEME? TRYING TO GET ALL THE PARTS OF THE DISPLAY TO WORK TOGETHER TO EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE YOUR PROJECT... A good layout... organizes A single unifying visual theme coordinates color choices, typography (lettering and fonts) and all graphics including illustrations, photography, charts/graphs, models, etc. 14

FIELD OF ENTRY BEHAVIORAL & SOCIAL SCIENCES MEDICINE AND HEALTH AERO, EARTH AND SPACE BIOLOGY (BOTANY AND ZOOLOGY) CHEMISTRY PHYSICS TEAM An easy place to start is your field of entry... 15

BOTANY Some areas might be easy to figure out, like botany for instance... you grew a plant, so choosing a green color scheme with either a variety of greens (analogous colors) or green and red (complementary colors) would be a good start. Graphic elements relating to the plant like a leaf design or motif (pronounced moteef: A single or repeated design or a recurring feature of a design or decoration.) To attach a picture, things necessary to grow the plant dirt, water, nutrients, sunlight etc... Finding your unifying theme helps to organize your layout. 16

17

ART INFO UNITY A feeling that all parts of a design are working together as a team. COLOR SPACE SHAPE GRAPHICS CHARTS GRAPHS PICTURES BODIES OF TEXT EXTRAS SHAPES (+) AREA AROUND SHAPES (-) A good layout... organizes 18

CHARTS PICTURES TABLES LAYOUT GRAPHICS TEXT MODELS COLORS A good layout... organizes 19

CAUTION!CAUTION!CAUTION!CAUTION! COLOR CAUTION!CAUTION!CAUTION!CAUTION! CHOOSE COLORS THAT RELATE TO YOUR PROJECT Choose and stick to a color scheme. Its a plan for selecting or organizing colors. 20

Common color schemes include: warm (1/2 yg-1/2 rv), cool (1/2 rv- 1/2 yg), neutral (black, white, and range of grays), monochromatic (1 color plus the tints, shades and tones of that color), analogous (colors that sit side-by-side on the color wheel and share a common hue or color), complementary (colors opposite each other on the color wheel), split-complementary (a color and the colors on either side of its complement) and triad (colors equally spaced on the color wheel). 21

Simple black typography (lettering for titles, subtitles etc) and white on white background has a bit of contrast, but not very attention getting, read: BORING... A good layout ATTRACTS 22

By using 2 primary (blue and yellow) colors plus black typography on a white ground, you create way more visual interest. Contrast is key... 23

CONTRAST CONTRAST CONTRAST Choose a color scheme with good contrast... Its hard to see the middle word because it lacks contrast... Another thing-- 24

CONTRAST Avoid yellow letters on white background... 25

SHAPE (S) GRAPHICS CHARTS GRAPHS PICTURES BODIES OF TEXT EXTRAS shape A flat figure created when actual or implied lines meet to enclose a space. A change in color or shading can define a shape. Shapes can be divided into several types: geometric (square, triangle, circle) and organic (irregular in outline). 26

Every element on the display board should be considered a shape. The black letters of PROJECT TITLE is a rectangle on a white rectangular background. The areas like RESEARCH, that include text the body of text is usually a rectangle... Etc. Equally important to shape is the idea of space. 27

SPACE: THE DISTANCE OR AREA AROUND OR BETWEEN THINGS [read slide] 28

There are two types of space positive and negative. Good composition has a balance between positive and negative space... 29

SPACE Too much space can create feelings of isolation, aloneness and lack of confidence 30

TOO MUCH NEGATIVE SPACE AROUND THE SHAPES When looking at this display, the viewer tends to think there wasn t much to say 31

Too little negative space can be uncomfortable and overwhelming 32

NOT ENOUGH NEGATIVE SPACE AROUND THE SHAPES When you don t have enough negative space things get confusing. To make your board readable, you have to give the eyes a chance to rest between sections. 33

A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF SPACE AROUND THE SHAPES Here, there is enough space for the viewers eyes to relax... distinguish between titles and subtitles and text. Which leads us to... 34

FONTS / TYPOGRAPHY PROJECT TITLE SHOULD BE THE LARGEST LETTERING AND READABLE FROM _-_FEET AWAY. SECTION TITLES SHOULD BE SMALLER Text, etc. [read slide] 35

AVOID USING FONTS THAT ARE HARD TO READ IN ALL CAPS.... OLD ENGLISH Tal fve\cg [read slide] 36

What s next... 37

STARTING YOUR DISPLAY BOARD GATHER PROJECT MATERIALS AND REFINE SINGLE UNIFYING VISUAL THEME [read slide] 38

PLANNING A COMPOSITION MEDIA: The materials used by an artist and the special techniques that make their use expressive. PROJECT: REPORTS, PICTURES, MODELS, ETC. DISPLAY BOARD PAPER: CONSTRUCTION, TAGBOARD, POSTERBOARD, CARDSTOCK MARKERS, PAINT (TEMPERA, ACRYLIC, WATERCOLOR) PROJECT CENTERED EXTRAS* [read slide] *Project centered extras are anything (pictures, graphics, offsets, etc) that goes along with your SINGLE UNIFYING VISUAL THEME... A good layout-- organizes 39

PLANNING A COMPOSITION TOOLS PENCIL FOR LAYOUT AND PLANNING RULER OR TAPE MEASURE YARDSTICK (STRAIGHT EDGE) GLUE (STICK)*, RUBBER CEMENT, DOUBLE SIDED TAPE, WHITE GLUE (LAST RESORT) SCISSORS, CRAFT KNIFE, SCRAPBOOKING TOOLS [read slide] 40

PLANNING A COMPOSITION START WITH A SKETCH PENCIL, RULER, PAPER At least one copy was included in your Science Fair folder. Extra copies can be found on the web page. Use pencil and ruler to draw a plan for your layout. For creativities sake, do more than one. 41

PLANNING A COMPOSITION TOOLS COMPUTERS AND PRINTERS... DON T NECESSARILY MAKE A BETTER DISPLAY JUST LIKE ADDING COLOR DOESN T MAKE IT BETTER LOOKING... PAPER: HEAVIER THE BETTER WHEN GLUEING* [read slide] You may (will) have to print out titles, subtitles and text a number of times until you get it/them the right size. Go black and white on cheap paper first... 42

TOOLS AND MEDIA TIPS, HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS COLORED PENCILS ON CARDBOARD DON T WORK AND SHOULD BE DONE ON PAPER THEN ATTACHED TO BOARD COLORED PENCILS ARE BEST USED FOR SMALL, DETAILED DRAWINGS SHOULD WORK TOWARDS INTENSE BOLD COLOR WITHOUT THE WHITE OR PAPER COLOR SHOWING THROUGH EXCEPT TO REPRESENT WHITE 43

TOOLS AND MEDIA TIPS, HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS WATER AND CARDBOARD DON T PLAY NICE TOGETHER... THINK WARPAGE IF PAINTING, USE A BOARD OR SUBSTRATE SUITED TO THE MEDIUM (TEMPERA, ACRYLIC, WATERCOLOR) FOAMCORE FOR TEMPERA OR ACRYLIC, HEAVY WATER COLOR PAPER FOR... DUH! 3-DIMENSIONAL ADDITIONS TO BOARDS ARE TRICKY.... GRAVITY AND BALANCE 44

TOOLS AND MEDIA TIPS, HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS DO USE DRAWING AIDS TO HELP YOU REPRESENT YOUR SUBJECT REALISTICALLY DRAWING AIDS: PICTURES FROM YOUR SCIENCE BOOK, GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH, BOOKS, MAGAZINES, THE INTERNET IN GENERAL LOOK IT UP, PRINT IT OUT AND USE IT AS A GUIDE TO DRAW OR PAINT IT. NOTHING WRONG HERE 45

TOOLS AND MEDIA TIPS, HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS UNLESS IT IS A PART OF YOUR SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT AVOID SPRAY PAINT (ITS NOT WATER BASED, BUT IT IS WET AND IT WILL WARP YOUR BOARD IF NOT USED SPARINGLY THIN COAT, LET DRY, REPEAT) IT CAN BE USED IN LIMITED AMOUNTS FOR BROAD, SWEEPING STROKES OR WITH MASKING TEMPLATES FOR BACKGROUNDS AND DISPLAY BOARD ENHANCEMENT 46

TOOLS AND MEDIA TIPS, HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS UNLESS IT IS A PART OF YOUR SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT AVOID SPRAY PAINT (ITS NOT WATER BASED BUT IT IS WET AND IT WILL WARP YOUR BOARD IF NOT USED SPARINGLY) IT CAN BE USED IN LIMITED AMOUNTS FOR BROAD, SWEEPING STROKES OR WITH MASKING TEMPLATES FOR BACKGROUNDS AND DISPLAY BOARD ENHANCEMENT 47

48

PLANNING A COMPOSITION BEFORE YOU MAKE A MARK OR ATTACH ANYTHING, LAYOUT ALL YOUR PARTS AND PIECES ON YOUR BOARD BASED ON YOUR SKETCH* I WILL REPEAT THIS [read slide] Some parts you wont be able to change or alter (photographs etc). For everything else, use scrap paper cut to size to see how things will fit on the display board. This is of particular importance if you are drawing anything titles, subtitles, illustrations, or other graphics. Always create/draw/sketch a rough draft or simple drawing to use for planning. It will help with scale (the size in relation to the other parts) 49

PLANNING A COMPOSITION THEN, MOVE, ADJUST SIZES, ARRANGE, REARRANGE ETC. USING A YARDSTICK AND OR STRAIGHT EDGE TO KEEP THINGS SQUARE OR AT LEAST CONSISTENT If you are using scrap paper to get things the right size and shape, you wont feel locked in on your layout... 50

PLANNING A COMPOSITION BEFORE YOU MAKE A MARK OR ATTACH ANYTHING, LAYOUT ALL YOUR PARTS AND PIECES ON YOUR BOARD BASED ON YOUR SKETCH* LOOK AND SOUND FAMILIAR? Your sketch, no doubt, will change its ok. Go with it. Once you get a layout you like, do a quick sketch of it or take a picture of it (if you are at home, of course). DON T MAKE ANY MARKS ON YOUR BOARD WITH ANYTHING BUT PENCIL AND MAKE YOUR MARKS VERRRRRY LIGHT! The darker colors of board wont erase very well. 51

PLANNING A COMPOSITION ONCE ALL THE PARTS ARE THE SIZE YOU WANT USE YOUR YARDSTICK / STRAIGHTEDGE TO ALIGN EDGES AND CENTER PARTS AND MARK CORNERS FOR PLACEMENT. 52

[read slide] 53

DON T MAKE A COMMITMENT UNTIL YOU ARE SURE THAT S WHAT YOU WANT! USE AS LITTLE WHITE GLUE AS POSSIBLE (NONE IS THE SAFEST) GLUE STICKS ARE BETTER BUT REQUIRE A LOT TO HOLD, BUT YOU WILL WANT THICKER PAPER TO PREVENT WRINKLES [read slide] Avoid white glue if at all possible. Glue sticks are better, but not as strong as double-sided tape, which also has issues... 54

DON T MAKE A COMMITMENT UNTIL YOU ARE SURE THAT S WHAT YOU WANT! SMALL AMOUTS GO A LONG WAY... BESIDES PAPER IS LIGHT SMALL SQUARES ON CORNERS LITTLE MARGIN FOR ERROR [read slide] 55

A WORD OR TWO ABOUT EXTRAS.... DON T ADD STUFF JUST TO DECORATE OR MAKE PRETTY EXTRAS SHOULD DIRECTLY RELATE TO YOUR PROJECT [read slide] We whole-heartedly encourage your creativity. The little extras do go along way to create a visually pleasing display board. Just remember the ideas of shape and space illustrated earlier. Too little negative space or overcrowding the board can be distracting. 56

REMEMBER.... The focus is the work, the board is just to show off the work. [read slide] 57

OTHER QUESTIONS TO ASK Are the sections on your display board organized like a newspaper so that they are easy to follow? Yes / No Is the text font large enough to be read easily (at least 16 points)? Yes / No [read slide] 58

OTHER QUESTIONS TO ASK Does the title catch people s attention, and is the title font large enough to be read from across the room? Yes / No Did you use pictures and diagrams to effectively convey information about your science fair project? Yes / No [read slide] 59

OTHER QUESTIONS TO ASK Have you constructed your display board as neatly as possible? Yes / No Did you proofread your display board? Yes / No Did you follow all of the rules pertaining to display boards for your particular science fair? Yes / No [read slide] 60
