1 Fall Fair Posters Grade: 5 Subject: Visual Arts August 7, 2013 Students will learn about WPA posters and create posters to advertise the school s annual Fall Fair. Overview Student Objectives List the bulleted goals/objectives behind your lesson plan Students will: Learn about the history of WPA posters and the Federal Art Project Study the use of color, composition, and lettering in selected WPA posters Design and create a poster for the school s Fall Fair Grade level 5 Curriculum area Example: Language Arts Materials Visual Arts White oak tag, pencils, erasers, rulers, markers, colored pencils, crayons

2 Standards Learning Standards by State Explain in bullet points how each of the Objectives align with state learning standards 1.2 History of the Arts and CultureAll students will understand the role, development, and influence of the arts throughout history and across cultures. The Federal Art Project and WPA posters are an important part of our country s artistic history. 1.3 PerformanceAll students will synthesize those skills, media, methods, and technologies appropriate to creating, performing, and/or presenting works of art in dance, music, theatre, and visual art. Students will each create a poster to advertise the school fair. Procedures/Resources Recommended time frame overview Example: 6 sessions: 1 30 min group intro / 5 30 min computer based activity sessions /1 30 min group wrapup (4) 50 min sessions: (1) group intro/ beginning sketches in sketchbook (3)activity sessions

3 List the procedure and resources for bullet points with resource links for each sessions: Session One: Introduce students to the history of the Federal Art Project and show examples of several WPA posters. Discuss use of color, lettering, images, layout, design Give students information about the Fall Fair (date, time, etc.), make a list of their favorite fair activities. Distribute sketchbooks, pencils, and erasers for students to sketch one or two of their favorite fair activities or themes. Session Two: Review main points from previous week. Distribute sketchbooks, pencils, and erasers for students to finish sketching their favorite fall fair activities or themes. Discuss layout for final posters with individual students. As they are ready, students will take a piece of oak tag and a ruler to begin their final poster, beginning with the lettering or the illustration. Session Three: Distribute sketchbooks, oak tag, rulers, pencils and erasers. Students will continue drawing their illustrations and lettering on their posters in pencil. Students will use markers to trace their lettering. They will have the choice of using markers, crayons, or colored pencils for their illustrations. Session Four: Distribute posters and materials Students will finish their posters, both the illustrations and lettering. Display finished posters for all to see, and discuss where we can see the influence of the WPA posters. Students will fill out questionnaires.

4 Evaluation Note the rubric which will help you evaluate/grade your students Students will be evaluated using group sharing of projects and a questionnaire for self evaluation and reflection. My elementary students do not receive formal grades in art. On the report card, they can get S for satisfactory or N for needs improvement. Additional Resources List any additional resources (example: websites related to lesson plan topic) that students can use for additional information and/or after class exploration Examples of fall fair posters made by students from previous years. Accommodations Note any accessibility options that might be applied to address student needs Students who have difficulty with writing may type on the computer, print, and glue. Students may use a simple image rather than a detailed illustration, or even cut out simple shapes for collage.
