1 Every Picture Tells a Story Photography and The Civil War Grade: 9 10 (Special Education) Subject: Social Studies + Social Skills July 19, 2013 Examination of the Civil War using Photographs with an emphasis on the Battle of Gettysburg. Overview Student Objectives List the bulleted goals/objectives behind your lesson plan Students will: Identify emotions from facial features in photographs Identify events from physical characteristics in photographs Learn about Matthew Brady and Civil War Photographs Evaluate the effect of a photograph on public opinion Write description of Civil War event from examination of photograph Grade level Curriculum area Example: Language Arts Materials 9, 10; Special Education (Autistic Support) Social Studies, Social Skills Photographs, graphic organizers and worksheets, internet
2 Standards Learning Standards by State Explain in bullet points how each of the Objectives align with state learning standards 16.1: Student Interpersonal Skills: Students will evaluate emotional responses in relation to the impact on self and others at home, work, school and community. (in lesson, determining emotion and event details from examination of photograph) 8.3.U.D. Conflict and Cooperation: Students will evaluate how conflict and cooperation among groups and organizations have impacted the history and development of PA and the U.S. (In lesson, research Civil War events, participants) A Students will explain the historical, cultural and social context of n individual in a work of art. (In lesson, examine Civil War photographs and determine possible effect on public opinion) Procedures/Resources Recommended time frame overview Example: 6 sessions: 1 30 min group intro / 5 30 min computer based activity sessions /1 30 min group wrapup 6 sessions (classes), 40 minutes each Each session: 10 minutes direct instruction 25 minutes group work and presentation 5 minutes wrap up
3 List the procedure and resources for bullet points with resource links for each sessions: Session One: Teacher will display 5 assorted photographs from Google images at a workstation. Students will examine photographs, circling around display. Using a handout graphic organizer, students will identify emotion of the subject by examining facial features. Using the graphic organizer, students will list 2 details from each photograph. Students will make a guess about person/event in photograph Share results as a group Session Two: Students will research photographer Matthew Brady using computer. Complete worksheet with biographical information. Suggested websites: photos/ Session Three: Teacher will describe Library of Congress and give demonstration of website Students will examine Civil War photographs, Battle of Gettysburg, from Library of Congress Students will complete NARA photograph analysis with teacher assistance, as group Session Four: Teacher and class will discuss war and power of photographs with tie in to current day conflicts and video games. Using the Library of Congress wesbite, teacher will show newspaper articles at time of the Civil War that show public opinion. Session Five: (Activity will take 2 sessions) Students will browse Library of Congress website for Civil War photographs. Battle of Gettysburg recommended. Each student will select 1 photograph, examine the photograph and write a 3 paragraph story describing the photograph. Include personal opinion about possible public reaction. Cut and paste photograph to document( including description and
4 URL from Library of Congress) Session Six: Students will complete assignment from session 5. Share with class. Evaluation Note the rubric which will help you evaluate/grade your students Students will be evaluated using. Teacher observation Student participation Group work Classroom writing rubric Additional Resources List any additional resources (example: websites related to lesson plan topic) that students can use for additional information and/or after class exploration (kid friendly videos, games, other info) (more kidfriendly information including music) Accommodations Note any accessibility options that might be applied to address student needs Individualized per student IEP Students will have direct assistance from teacher and instructional assistants
