2 Purpose Statement Social Studies: New Mexico History The New Mexico History EoC assessment is intended to measure student proficiency of the New Mexico Social Studies Standards. This course-level assessment is provided to all students who have completed New Mexico History (STARS code 2717) or related courses to measure student proficiency of the New Mexico state standards in social studies. In rare instances, it may also align with the curriculum for Grade 7 New Mexico History (STARS code 2700). Intended as a final exam for the course, this is a summative assessment covering a wide range of content, skills, and applications. Scores are reported to the teacher, school, district, and state levels for the purposes of student grades, curriculum review, student graduation requirements, and the optional use for the Educator Effectiveness System. Analyze the impact of the arts, sciences and technology of New Mexico since World War II (e.g., artists, cultural artifacts, nuclear weapons, the arms race, technological advances, scientific developments, high-tech industries, federal laboratories). Explain how New Mexico history represents a framework of knowledge and skills within which to understand the compl0065ity of the human experience. Compare and contrast structures and powers of New Mexico s government as expressed in the New Mexico Constitution. Explain and analyze how water is a scare resource in New Mexico, both in quantity and quality. Analyze the factors influencing economic activities (e.g., mining, ranching, agriculture, tribal gaming, tourism, high tech) that have resulted in NewMexico s population growth. How cooperation and conflict are involved in shaping the distribution of political, social and economic factors in New Mexico, United States and throughout the world (e.g., land grants, border issues, United States territories, Israel and the middle east, the former Soviet Union, and Sub-Saharan Africa).
