VA:Cr2.2.K Identify safe and non-toxic art materials, tools, and equipment. VA:Cr3.1.K Explain the process of making art while creating. Play-Dough Students will be starting to look at a different element of art, shape. To introduce shapes students will watch a short video about shapes from our Arts & Humanities curriculum. We will then talk about how shapes are all around us. Students will then learn what geometric shapes are and we will practice drawing and naming them. After we discuss geometric shapes, students will receive a play-dough mat with shapes on it. They will use the play dough to make the shapes. After we practice different shapes, students will see the artwork they will be creating. Before we start creating our dinosaur collages they will hear a story about a dinosaur. I will show students different dinosaurs from our story and show them how they can make them with their geometric shapes. Once students are finished we will assess our artwork using a grade appropriate rubric.

Once students are reminded of geometric shapes, we will talk about free-form shapes (shapes that don t resemble anything). We will then read Jeremy Draws a Monster by Peter McCarty. Students will then be lead through a monster drawing where they will first receive a piece of string that they will have to lay on their paper and create a free-form shape with. Once they create their shape they will then trace the shape onto their paper and turn it into a monster, like in our story. Once students are finished we will assess our artwork using a grade appropriate rubric.
