Amanda Ellis ED 337 Unit: Shading Techniques 7-8th Grade Art Purpose: This performance task will be used as a summative assessment to gauge student understanding of shading. The assessment will include the creation of preliminary sketches and a final product created from a still life set up within the classroom. Two classroom critiques will also occur: halfway through the final product, and once the final products have been finished. Ideally, the final product should display a successful application of shading with a clear light source and full range of values. Shading can be done by graduated tones, hatching, or cross-hatching. The medium used will be pencils with varying hardness. Feedback will be focused on: - The creation of preliminary sketches/thumbnails. - Ability to critique the work of peers with knowledgeable comments and respect. - The final drawing. Grading will be focused on: - The final drawing (1 product worth 30 points) Standards: ART.VA.I.7.1 Understand the varying qualities of materials, techniques, media technology, and processes at an emerging level. During the critiques we will ask questions and make comments based off the final rubric which will require the students to compare their drawings to the learning goals. Any gaps seen in the process will be addressed, and individual assistance can be given during class.
Name: Hour: Date: Shading Techniques with Pencil Purpose: It is important to understand the techniques of shading in order to create an accurate still-life drawing. This task will assess how much you have learned about shading from previous instruction and assignments. Through the process of creating preliminary sketches and participating in classroom critiques, it is my hope that you will present a final product that displays your understanding of shading with a high level of craftsmanship. Directions: This performance task will be completed within one week of class. Make sure to use your time wisely so that you do not fall behind. Your preliminary sketches and final drawing will be created with PENCIL ONLY. Using varying hardness of pencils is encouraged in order to achieve the entire value scale. Follow the day-to-day directions provided. If you are absent or fall behind, please come talk to me. We will make arrangements to assure that you will be caught up. If you have any questions or need further demonstration, come ask me. I will gladly assist you throughout the process. DO NOT LOSE THIS ASSIGNMENT PACKET!! You will need this as a reference for your daily goals. It is important to learn how to follow deadlines and pace yourself.
Day 1 Create 3 preliminary sketches from the still life set up in the classroom. You will have half the class period to complete this step. Create your sketches on newsprint paper. They should be no bigger than 6x10. Each sketch should be drawn from a different angle. Make sure to indicate the range of value seen within each sketch. Remember that these are sketches and do not need to be perfect. Spend only about 5 to 10 minutes on each sketch. Once the sketches have been drawn, find a partner and discuss which sketch has the best composition. Interesting compositions often include aspects such as: overlapping, a wide range of values, varying shapes, repetition, positive/negative spaces, cropping, contrast, balance, etc. Make sure your chosen composition has a clear foreground, middle-ground, and background. Your chosen composition will be used to create your final drawing.
Day 2 Your final drawing will be completed on the white drawing paper provided. To begin, use painters tape to create a 2 border on the bottom edge, and a 1 border around the other three edges. Begin drawing your composition. DO NOT BEGIN TO SHADE! Make sure to frequently look at the still life. Do not just draw from your sketch or from memory. Once you have finished drawing your composition, show me your drawing. We will discuss what aspects are good and what may be improved before you begin shading.
Day 3 After I have checked your drawing, begin shading according to what you observe from your composition of the still life. Shading may be done with ONE of the following techniques: graduated tones, hatching, or cross-hatching. Make sure to include the full range of values. Make sure that your shading has a clear light source. You will have half of the class period to begin working on your shading. The second half of class will be used as a time for in-progress critiques. Find a partner and fill out the in-progress critique worksheet. Make sure your comments are constructive and respectful. Discuss your comments with each other and how each drawing could be improved. I will also walk around and give verbal comments on your work.
Name: Hour: Date: In-Progress Critique Name of the artist being critiqued: 1. What has the artist done well in his/her drawing? Be specific! (What about their composition is interesting? Do they have a clear light source? Is their shading done correctly and with a full range of values?) 2. What aspects are unclear in their drawing? Be specific and respectful with your comments! (Can you tell where the light source is? Can you tell what objects are in the foreground/middle-gound/background? Can you see clear definitions of objects? Is there a ground plane? Can you tell if the artist has used either graduated tones, hatching, or cross-hatching?) 3. What steps can the artist take to improve their drawing? Once again, be specific! (Should any objects be altered? Should the shading have more range in value? Where could the value be improved? Have they missed any light reflections?)
Day 4 Continue working on your drawing. Follow the comments given during the in-progress critique in order to improve your techniques. You should finish your drawing by the end of class today. If you have any concerns or questions, please come and talk with me. Self-Check Look over the list below and make sure that you have done your best! Your finished drawing should include: An interesting composition drawn from the still-life provided in class. Either graduated tone, hatching, or cross-hatched shading. The full range of values. A clear and consistent light source. Sense of light reflections (if any). Distinct separation of objects (one object should not morph into another object that has the same value).
Day 5 Today we will exhibit our final drawings and hold a classroom critique! It is important that you learn not only how to create a finished piece, but how to present and analyze your work in a community setting. Hang your finished piece on the critique wall, and take some time to look at the work of your peers. After taking time to see everyoneʼs drawing, we will hold a classroom critique. I expect everyone to participate! Make sure your comments are constructive and respectful!! In order to critique everyone, I will limit discussions to only 5 to 7 minutes for each drawing. After the critique, complete the grading rubric for your own work. What grade do you think you should receive? I will discuss your drawing and completed rubric with you individually before determining a grade.
Name: Hour: Date: Grading Rubric Directions: Circle the proficiency level you believe that you achieved for each performance criteria. Please write any comments or questions on the lines provided.
