1 Cezanne s Apples: Still Life 3 rd Grade PERFORM Domain
2 Process: After a pre-assessment, students read and discussed the life and work of Cezanne within the book Cezanne and the Apple Boy. When students returned to their tables, we participated in a group discussion of shape-to-form, overlapping, and placement to create the illusion of depth in an artwork. Students then sketched a bowl of apples, paying careful attention to applying knowledge gained in whole group instruction. Black tempera was painted over their lines and students used tempera to color their artworks after a discussion about complementary colors in Cezanne s work. They added shadows and other details with chalk after letting the paint dry. To summarize the learning, the class participated in a gallery walk and assessed their learning using an art rubric. Lesson Objective: I can create a Cezanne-inspired still life demonstrating the illusion of space. Criteria for assessment: 1. Shape-to-form through highlighting and shading 2. Overlapping 3. Complementary shading 4. Accurate light source 5. Cezanne-inspired (bold, black lines, complementary shading, fruits having more than one color, subject matter) 6. Level of Craftsmanship Domain: This collection represents the Perform domain. Perform is shown in the pre-instructional drawing to the post-instructional still life.

4 Pre-Instructional sketch The student arranged red circles, stacking them beside and on top of each other. There is no overlapping of the fruit except for its placement hovering on the edge of the bowl. The bowl has been drawn using ellipses which shows some attention to form. The still life is set upon a table that has been rudimentarily drawn, with little attention to perspective. No details to background or setting are included. Details such as wallpaper and window are also included. It is obvious that the student has grown exponentially from the pre-assessment. 5 Pre-Instructional Still Life The student has drawn organic shapes for her apples and leaves, which she has set within a brown bowl. She added geometric shapes for the windows and sun, although the sun should be outside. Her work demonstrates some attention to skill and understanding of space as she has placed the apples in the bowl and created a background. Pre-Assessment Sketch from the beginning of the year Post- Instructional Color Wheel, 100% Correct The student has met all lesson criteria and demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship. Her fruit seems to have mass and the bowl is well drawn. The glass of water, window, wallpaper, and table are details that create a strong composition. She is extremely successful at creating a Cezanne-inspired work. 6 Pre-Instructional Sketch The student has drawn organic apple shapes that have been placed inside a bowl. However they have not been overlapped and there is no real sense of space except for the ellipse that was used to draw the bowl, suggesting form. The detail on the bowl demonstrates an attention to craftsmanship. She has also included details such as wallpaper (inspired by some of Cezanne s work) and a tablecloth. The student shows adroitness in her handling of a variety of media.
