1 Specificc Talent Aptitude: Visual Arts Examples of Performance Evaluation Rubrics & Scales: Visual Arts 1 Office of Gifted Education Examples of Performance Evaluation Rubrics and Scales Identification in the talent domains requires the examination of a variety of instruments and multiple pathways that leadd to identification. Talent domains include: visual arts, performing arts, music, dance, psychomotor, creativity and leadership. Often criterion or norm referenced assessments are nott available in a talent area; therefore performance evaluation is an important component in the body of evidence. If data from a valid and reliablee test are not available to demonstrate exceptional ability, two or more indicators in the performance area may be used to meet identification criteria along with an exceptional rating on a norm referenced observation scale. Performance Evaluation and State or national talent contest top place or ranking and/ /or Expert juried performance (Advanced or Distinguished) and/ /or Portfolio review (Advanced or Distinguished) Practitioner Tips Norm Referenced Observatio n Scale and Criterion/Norm Referenced Test* 95th percentile or above on norm referenced observation scale in area of talent 95th percentile or above on norm referenced creativity test and/or Advanced/95% or above on approvedd criterion referenced specific talent test and/ /or 95th percentile or above on cognitivee measure *If criterion or norm referenced tests aree not available, two performance evaluations are requiredd along with observation scale Specific Talent Aptitude Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Music, Dance, Psychomotor, Creativity, Leadership Fair, accurate and consistent evaluations of student work are critical to the screening and identification process. Trainedd individuals evaluating student work play a vital role in identifying talent, providing feedback to students, and helping educators and parents make appropriate and informed educational decisions. Trained individuals would include highly qualified art teachers and community visual artists, experts or practitioners in the field. It is helpful when the evaluatorss are experienced in the same medium on which the student is being evaluated. The following questions may be useful for trained individuals to consider as they assess visual art portfolios. Am I objective about assessing the natural ability of this student, regardless of my past knowledge of or relationship with the student? Am I assessing the Display of Work in comparison to other works created by students of similar age? Am I assessing the Display of Work in comparison to other works created by students with similar training and experience? Am I assessing the Display of Work in comparison to other works created by students from similar environments? Do I have sufficient familiarity with works of art created by students of similar age, training and environment to allow me to make valid comparisons? Are my written comments legible, clear and understandable?? Are my comments professional in tone and word choice?
2 2 Are my comments and criticisms specific and constructive? 9 9 Guidelines for Trained Individuals Evaluating Display of Work Portfolios Step One: Review the collection for completeness. An incomplete Display of Work cannot be evaluated. Are at least five works of art included? Is a Response Sheet included for each work of art submitted? If an entry is a student created reproduction, is the original photograph, post card or magazine print attached to the artwork? Step Two: Thoroughly review each example of student work in the Display of Work, along with the corresponding Artwork Written Response Sheet. Step Three: Using the rubric, circle or check the evaluation description that best applies to the collection of work as whole. Students should be rated relative to other students of similar age, training and environment. Step Four: Total the points received to obtain the final score achieved by the student. Step Five: Write comments on the rubric to indicate strengths and weaknesses of the Display of Work. Where can I learn more?
