3 At Aardvark to Zebra you will find wonderful and unusual animal patterns and kits for you to make. The patterns range from easy to make to more advanced. You will have hours of pleasure making and living with these animals. You can express your creativity by modifying the patterns to suit your desires. 4 SPECIAL FURNITURE TECHNIQUES Stretchy Bracelet Jewelry Creating the Arts & Crafts Look The Arts & Crafts style continues to surge in popularity, prompting many homeowners and apartment dwellers to seek out both antiques from the original movement ( ) and reproductions. However, both Arts & Crafts antiques and the new reproductions are expensive, but a third alternative now exists: unfinished Arts & Crafts furniture. Using the same staining and finishing techniques and, in some instances, some of the same products, you can create the Arts & Crafts look for a small fraction of the cost of antiques or reproductions. Creating the Stenciled Look - Without Stencils While there is a wide assortment of stencils available, we still cannot always find the exact pattern we want. Or perhaps we find it, but not in the right size to fit our project. Rather than going to the trouble of designing and cutting your own stencil, you can create the stenciled look using art masking fluid. Steps: 1. Apply wood conditioner to the piece and wait 15 minutes for it to dry. 2. Apply a base coat of water-based stain. Let dry. 3. Trace the outline of your design onto the wood, either freehand or using a pattern. 4. Fill in the outline using art masking fluid and a small brush. Let dry. 5, Apply a coat of stain over the entire piece. 6. Peal off the art masking fluid to reveal the design. 7. Protect the wood and the stain with a waterbased finish. COURTESY: Bruce Johnson Minwax 4 Materials: Stretchy cord (size that fits through your bead holes easily) or stretchy floss Beads of your choice (enough to fit around the wrist) Bonding glue 1 Twisted wire beading needle (if you use the stretchy floss) Embroidery scissors Use about 1 yard of stretchy cord or floss. String on the beads in the order that you desire until the bead strand will fit around your wrist, just tight enough so no cord or floss shows between the beads. Next tie a surgeon s knot making sure the beads stay tight together. Thread the tails into the adjacent beads. Put a drop of glue on the knot and wiggle the cord or floss so that the glue goes into the beads next to the knot. This keeps the tails hidden in the beads. Let dry and then cut off the excess cord or floss. COURTESY: Liz Gourley & Ellen Talbott Authors & Designers
5 Supplies: 1/2 yard muslin 1/4 yard print fabric for dress Trim for dress Hemostats (locking pliers) for turning (optional) Stuffing fork (optional) Polyfil Acrylic paints: green, brown, white Colored pencils in browns & reds Sandpaper Instant Coffee Patterns are on next page Instructions: From muslin, cut out 2 bodies, 4 arms, & 4 legs. Stitch all the way around the body with an opening at the bottom for stuffing. Do the same with the arms & legs. Clip curves and turn right side out. Stuff all parts tightly to about 3/4 from the opening. Hand sew arms to body. Pin legs inside body opening and sew with sewing machine. Hand-draw Miss Kitty s face and stripes lightly with a pencil. Paint her eyes white with green pupils and black centers. Paint a little white highlight on the left of each eye. Paint her nose triangle brown and line her mouth, around her eyes and nose lightly with black. Paint her stripes brown. Allow to dry completely. Sew a loop on the back of her head for hanging. Mix a strong mixture of instant coffee and water. Brush some of the mixture all over Miss Kitty and hang to dry. After she is dry, use your red colored pencil to blush her cheeks. Shade under her eyes, around her nose and her stripes with different brown pencils. For her dress, cut 2 pieces. Sew together as indicated on pattern by dotted lines. Clip the curves, trim & turn right side out. Sew some fancy trim to the hem of her dress. Cut a slit in the top of the dress big enough to slip it over her head. Turn under the edges, sew a running stitch around the neckline of the dress, pull tight to gather and tie off. 5

7 Supplies: 1/2 yard muslin 1/4 yard print fabric for dress Red wool yarn for hair Red thread Hemostats (locking pliers) for turning (optional) Stuffing fork (optional) Polyfil Acrylic paints: red, black, white Sandpaper Instant Coffee Pattern on previous page Instructions: From muslin, cut out 2 bodies, 4 arms, & 4 legs. Stitch all the way around the body with an opening at the bottom for stuffing. Do the same with the arms & legs. Clip curves and turn right side out and stuff all parts tightly. Hand sew arms to body. Pin legs inside body opening and sew with sewing machine. For Annie s face, draw her face on with a pencil. Paint her eyes white with black centers. Paint her nose & lips red and line her mouth with black. Dry brush cheeks with red paint,. To do this, dip your brush in red paint, rub on an old rag or paper towel until almost dry, then paint red stripes on her legs and paint her feet black. Allow to dry, then sand lightly. Sew a loop on the back of her head for hanging. Mix a strong mixture of instant coffee and water. Brush some of the mixture all over, making sure she is covered well and hang Annie to dry. For her dress, cut 2 pieces. Sew together as indicated on pattern by dotted lines. Clip the curves, trim & turn right side out. You can either hem by hand or on the machine.
