1 Top Down Teddy Bear By Diane Dunwoodie I used Judy s Magic cast on to begin but you can do whatever works for you such as four double pointed needles. Any yarn can be used your bear will just be a slightly different size. Choose a needle size that will give you a tight fabric so that the stuffing will not come through. I used worsted weight yarn and size 3 circular needles for mine. Abbreviations used: K knit Kfb Knit in front and back of stitch K 2 tog knit two together PM place marker Rd round N 1 Needle number one N2 Needle number two SM slip marker RM remove marker sts stitches

2 Cast on 36 sts. Divide them as follows Needle #1 18, Needle #2 18. Rounds 1-7 knit At the end of this round place a small removable marker on each side so you will know where to sew the ears at the end. N#2- knit ( N 1 19 sts ) (N 2 18 sts ) Rd 28 N#1 & N#2 - knit Begin legs as follows: Rd 29 N 1 k 8, k 2 tog, k 9, N 2 k 9, place the last 9 sts on st, holder Rd 30 N#1 place the first 9 sts. on the holder, k 2 tog, k 8. N 2 knit Each needle should now have 9 sts each and there should be 18 sts on the stitch holder for the second leg to be worked after this one. Rd 1 18 knit evenly around for the leg Rd 19 k 1, k 2 tog around Cut thread about 12 long and thread through remaining stitches closing up the opening at the bottom of the leg weave in ends. Before working the second leg stuff head body and completed leg. Once you work the second leg there will be very little room for you to stuff your bear. Pick up sts from your holder and divide onto the two needles 9 on each. Work second leg as the first. Remember to stuff this leg before you draw up the stitches and finish it off. Sew the small gap that you have between the legs at the base of the bears body and tie off and weave in this yarn as well. Arms: Pick up sts that are on the stitch holder dividing them as follows N#1 7 sts, N#2 pick up the last 3 sts from the holder, then pick up 4 sts from under the arm on body of bear. Work in rounds Rd 2-12 knit all stitches Stuff arm Rd 13 - N#1 k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 2 tog. [ 4 sts] N#2 same as needle 1 Add a bit of additional stuffing if needed. Cut piece of yarn about 10 thread through and pull tight fasten off and weave in thread to finish arm.

5 Mark second arm same as first. Using matching yarn sew from the removable marker at the top side of the head through all layers of fiber to create ears. See diagram. Use black thread or embroidery floss to make eyes nose and mouth. For a bow tie. Cast on 7 sts, Knit back and forth for 5 rows, cast off. With yarn wrap around the center of your knitted tie pulling tight to form your bow. Fast off and sew to the neck of your bear. If you want a girl bear the flower that I used was artificial and sewn in place with sewing thread. Glue can be used but I do not recommend it for children under three years old as they could pull it off and it could become a choking hazard. On some of the bears I embroidered a little red heart rather than the tie or flowers He could even have a scarf or something. I am sure that you can come up with all sorts of wonderful embellishments for your bear too. The collar for the girl is a scrap of sport yarn, Cast on 30 sts. knit 1 row, cast off in a picot edge. Place around bear neck and sew in place in the back. For flower knit a three stitch eye cord and simply fold and sew into a multi pedal flower. I also added a French knot to the center of my flower before attaching it to the bears ear.
