2 Santa Bear Finished Size: Approximately 11" tall (seated) MATERIALS Worsted Weight Yarn, approximately: Brown - 1 ounce, (30 grams, 65 yards) Black - 3 /4 ounce, (20 grams, 50 yards) Red - 3 ounces, (90 grams, 195 yards) White - 3 /4 ounce, (20 grams, 50 yards) Crochet hook, size G (4.00 mm) or size needed for gauge Polyester stuffing Yarn needle 1 /4" Buttons for eyes - 2 Sewing needle and thread 1 /2" Buttons for Body - 2 GAUGE: 8 sc and 9 rows = 2" HEAD Rnd 1 (Right side): With Brown, ch 2, 2 sc in second ch from hook, place marker around last sc made to mark center front, 4 sc in same ch; do not join, place marker (see Markers, page 4): 6 sc. Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 24 sc. Rnd 5: (Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 30 sc. Rnd 6: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 7: (Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 36 sc. Rnd 8: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 9: (Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 42 sc. Rnds 10-16: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 17: (Sc in next 5 sc, decrease) around (see Decreases, page 4): 36 sc. Stuff Head firmly. BODY Rnd 1: With right side of Head facing and working in Back Loops Only (Fig. 2, page 5), join Red with sc in same st as slip st on Rnd 20 (see Joining With Sc, page 4); sc in each sc around; do not join, place marker: 18 sc. Rnd 2: 2 Sc in both loops of each sc around: 36 sc. Rnd 3: (Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 42 sc. Rnd 4: (Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 48 sc. Rnds 5-9: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 10: Sc in each sc around changing to Black in last sc (Fig. 3, page 5). Rnd 11: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 12: Sc in each sc around changing to Red in last sc. Rnd 13: Sc in Back Loop Only of each sc around. Rnds 14-17: Sc in both loops of each sc around. Rnd 18: (Sc in next 6 sc, decrease) around: 42 sc. Rnd 19: (Sc in next 5 sc, decrease) around: 36 sc. Rnd 20: (Sc in next 4 sc, decrease) around: 30 sc. Stuff Body firmly. Rnd 21: (Sc in next 3 sc, decrease) around: 24 sc. Rnd 22: (Sc in next 2 sc, decrease) around: 18 sc. Rnd 23: (Sc in next sc, decrease) around: 12 sc. Rnd 24: Decrease around; slip st in next sc, finish off leaving a long end for sewing. Add more stuffing if necessary. Thread yarn needle with yarn end and weave through stitches on Rnd 24; gather tightly and secure end. TRIM With right side facing, Head toward you, and working in free loops on Rnd 12 of Body (Fig. 1, page 5), join White with sc in same st as color change; sc in each sc around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off. COLLAR Rnd 1: With right side facing, Head toward you, and working in free loops on Rnd 20 of Head, join White with sc in same st as slip st; sc in each sc around; join with slip st to first sc: 18 sc. Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st and in each sc around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off. MUZZLE Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 4: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 18 sc. Rnd 5: Sc in each sc around; slip st in next sc, finish off leaving a long end for sewing. Using photo as a guide for placement and having marker at center front, sew Muzzle to Head stuffing lightly before closing. 3 Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around changing to Red in last sc. Rnd 5: Sc in Back Loop Only of each sc around. Rnds 6-18: Sc in both loops of each sc around; at end of Rnd 18, slip st in next sc, finish off leaving a long end for sewing. CUFF With right side facing, Rnd 18 toward you, and working in free loops on Rnd 4, join White with sc in same st as color change; sc in each sc around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off. Stuff Arms firmly up to 1" from top edge; lightly stuff remaining portion. Flatten top edge of each Arm and sew opening closed. Using photo as a guide for placement, sew Arms to Body. LEG (Make 2) Rnd 1 (Right side): With Black, ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 24 sc. Rnd 5: (Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 30 sc. Rnds 6-8: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 9: Decrease 6 times, sc in each sc around changing to White in last sc: 24 sc. Rnd 10: Sc in each sc around changing to Red in last sc. Rnd 11: Sc in Back Loop Only of each sc around. Rnds 12-20: Sc in both loops of each sc around. Rnd 21: (Sc in next 2 sc, decrease) around; slip st in next sc, finish off leaving a long end for sewing. CUFF With right side facing, Rnd 21 toward you, and working in free loops on Rnd 10, join White with sc in same st as color change; sc in each sc around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off. Using photo as a guide for placement, stuff Legs firmly and sew to Body. HAT With White, ch 40 loosely; being careful not to twist ch, join with slip st to form a ring. Rnd 1 (Right side): Ch 1, sc in each ch around; join with slip st to first sc: 40 sc. Note: Loop a short piece of yarn around any stitch to mark last round as right side. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each sc around; join with slip st to Front Loop Only of first sc. Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in Front Loop Only of same st and each sc around; join with slip st to both loops of first sc. Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in both loops of same st and each sc around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off. Rnd 5: With right side facing, join Red with sc in same st as joining; sc in each sc around; join with Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 5 sc, decrease, (sc in next 6 sc, decrease) around; join with slip st to first sc: 35 sc. Rnds 7 and 8: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each sc around; join with Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 4 sc, decrease, (sc in next 5 sc, decrease) around; join with slip st to first sc: 30 sc. Rnds 10 and 11: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each sc around; join with Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 3 sc, decrease, (sc in next 4 sc, decrease) around; join with slip st to first sc: 25 sc. Rnd 13: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each sc around; join with Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 2 sc, decrease, (sc in next 3 sc, decrease) around; join with slip st to first sc: 20 sc. Rnd 15: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each sc around; join with Rnd 16: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next sc, decrease, (sc in next 2 sc, decrease) around; join with slip st to first sc: 15 sc. Rnd 17: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each sc around; join with Rnd 18: Ch 1, sc in same st, decrease, (sc in next sc, decrease) around; join with slip st to first sc: 10 sc. Rnd 19: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each sc around; join with Rnd 20: Ch 1, work beginning decrease, decrease around; join with slip st to first sc: 5 sc. Rnd 21: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each sc around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off leaving a long end for sewing. Thread yarn needle with yarn end and weave through stitches on Rnd 21; gather tightly and secure end. POM-POM Rnd 1: With White, ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from hook; do not join, place marker. Rnd 3: Decrease around; slip st in next sc, finish off leaving a long end for sewing. Using photo as a guide for placement, sew pom-pom to Hat. EAR (Make 2) Rnds 4-7: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 8: Decrease around; slip st in next sc, finish off leaving a long end for sewing. Flatten Ears and sew openings closed. Using photo as a guide for placement, sew Ears to Hat and sew Hat to Head. 4 FINISHING Using photo as a guide for placement: Sew eyes to Head. With Black, work Satin Stitch for nose (Fig. 6, page 5). Sew buttons to Body. BEARD Cut a piece of cardboard approximately 3" square. Wind White loosely and evenly around the cardboard until the card is filled, then cut across one end; repeat as needed. Separate each ply on one strand of yarn. Holding all plies together, fold in half. Using photo as a guide for placement, use a crochet hook to draw the folded end around the post of an sc (Fig. 4, page 5) below Hat at side of face and pull the loose ends through the folded end (Fig. 5, page 5); draw the knot up tightly. Repeat to add fringe along edge of face and across bottom of Muzzle. Trim ends. GAUGE Correct gauge is essential for proper size. Hook size given in instructions is merely a guide and should never be used without first making a sample swatch in the stitch, yarn, and hook specified. Then measure it, counting your stitches and rows carefully. If your swatch is smaller than specified, try again with a larger size hook; if larger, try again with a smaller size. Keep trying until you find the size that will give you the specified gauge. DO NOT HESITATE TO CHANGE HOOK SIZE TO OBTAIN CORRECT GAUGE. General Instructions single crochet(s) stitch(es) yarn over MARKERS Markers are used to help distinguish the beginning of each round being worked. Place a 2" scrap piece of yarn before the first stitch of each round, moving marker after each round is complete. JOINING WITH SC When instructed to join with sc, begin with a slip knot on hook. Insert hook in stitch or space indicated, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through both loops on hook. DECREASES BEGINNING DECREASE Pull up a loop in first 2 sts, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook (counts as one sc). 5 FREE LOOPS After working in Back or Front Loops Only on a round, there will be a ridge of unused loops. These are called the free loops. Fig. 2 back both front ATTACHING THE BEARD Fig. 5 CHANGING COLORS Work the last stitch to within one step of completion, hook new yarn (Fig. 3) and draw through all loops on hook. Do not cut yarn unless otherwise specified. Fig. 3 SATIN STITCH Satin Stitch is series of straight stitches worked side by side, touching but not overlapping.
