5 Copyright 2011 DCollinsworth 5 MATERIALS: Dog: Lion Suede yarn in Print, Lion bran Fun Fur in Champagne, 4 ply yarn in Brown, DMC size 5 Pearl Cotton in White and Blue, size J, H & O (zero) hook or hook to obtain gauge, small amount of cardboard, 4 small snaps, needle and invisible (clear) sewing thread. Fleas & such: Size 10 crochet thread in Black, Blue, Pink, Yellow, White, Red, Green and Natural (whatever odd and ends you have on hand), chenille stems, needle to take crochet thread, small amount of stuffing, gray & black fabric pants, small amount of cardboard, round toothpicks and craft glue. GAUGE: Suede: 4 hdc sts = 1-1\2, 3 rows hdc = 1-1\2. Thread: 9 hdc sts = 1, 6 rows hdc = 1 FINISHED SIZE: Dog Body Closed: 6 X 11. Dog Body Open: 11 X 11. Flea: 3-1\2 tall. DOG BODY: ROW 1: With Suede and J hook ch-28, hdc 3rd ch from hook, hdc ea ch across, ch-1, turn. (26 sts) ROW 2-19: Hdc ea st across, ch-1, turn. PUTTING THE FLEA TOGETHER: Cut 3 chenille stems in half. Take ea half of a stem and fold it in half twisting it to hold. Place twisted stem inside ea crochet leg-arm. Place open ends of 4 legs-arms into the bottom of the flea. With needle and thread sew in place. Sew other two legs-arms to ea side of flea at shoulders. Using gray fabric paint make two eyes a nose on the flea s face. Let dry and then come back and place a black dot on ea eye. Weave two toothpick over and under sts across bottom of wagon. These will be the wagon s axles. Glue one wheel to ea end of toothpick. Make as many wagons as you did babies. Connect the wagons tog by joining thread in middle back one wagon, ch-4, sl st corresponding spot next wagon. The cardboard is shorter than the crochet pieces so when you sew a pair of house sides tog there will be 2-3 rows free. Sew down to these free rows and across bottom of the cardboard. The free rows make the flap you needed to sew to inside the dog s body for the house to stand up. Make 2 sides this way. Sew tog at long edges keeping free rows free. Find the center of the dog s body by folding it in half. Place the seam of house at that point laying flaps out straight onto suede crochet piece. Pin in place and make sure house will fold inside and lay flat when the two sides of the dog are placed tog. Sew in place. Sew the gusset bet the two pieces of roof at long edges. Sew center triangle bet roof pieces at short ends and where row 1 of gusset meets end of roof. (Sew photo) Lay finished roof on top of house with roof overlapping house edges. The roof will not lay across the top of the house, but rather diagonally from center to outer edge. Sew in place.
