REGISTER BY JUNE 10 GUIDELINES + POLICIES HOW TO REGISTER Register online at arkansasartscenter.org/museumschool. confirmations are sent to students who provide a valid address. REGISTRATION DEADLINES Please consult the online schedule for registration deadlines for each class or workshop. If minimum enrollment is not reached by the registration deadline, the class will be cancelled and refunds will be issued. A $50 administrative fee will be added to registrations received after the deadline for any class or workshop. ENROLLMENT Class space is limited. Registration is first come first served. Please register early. Most registrations will close one week in advance of the class start date. TUITION Tuition amounts are noted in the class schedule. Full payment of tuition is required at the time of registration. Tuition is not pro-rated. Payment plans are available. Call for more information. DISCOUNTS Arkansas Arts Center members receive 20% off tuition for one year from the date of their membership. To learn more about membership benefits visit arkansasartscenter.org/ membership. CANCELLATIONS The Arkansas Arts Center reserves the right to cancel, combine or reschedule classes as needed. Classes not meeting the minimum enrollment will be cancelled one week in advance of the start date. Students will be notified by if a class has been cancelled and will receive a full refund. 3 Register by June 10 ADULT CLASSES ADULT CLASSES CERAMICS Only clay purchased at the Arkansas Arts Center is allowed for use in ceramics classes. During the first session, students will purchase a 25 lb. bag of clay from their instructor. Cost is $30 and covers all glazing and firing fees. Basic Handbuilding is required for all intermediate or advanced handbuilding and wheelthrowing classes. DAY CLASSES Basic Handbuilding ACE01-5 JEAN MROSS Mondays, 9 a.m. 12 p.m. Explore basic pinch, slab, and coil construction methods, as well as the use of molds. Decorative treatments will include stamps, slips, and stains. Learn how to glaze and finish pots using high-fire glazing techniques. Important to attend first class. Intro to Wheel & Independent Study ACE05-3 JEAN MROSS Mondays, 12:30 3:30 p.m. Prerequisite: Basic Handbuilding or equivalent Need an intro to the wheel or just some help refining your existing skills? Sign up for a throwing class! Learn to throw a cylinder, mug, bowl, vase, and various other functional pots. Discover how to finish pots, using standard decorating and glazing techniques. High-fire, low-fire, and Raku available. Intermediate/Advanced Hand & Wheel ACE19-3 JULIA BAUGH Tuesdays, 10 a.m. 1 p.m. Prerequisite: Basic Handbuilding & Introduction to the Wheel or equivalent Explore both handbuilding and wheelthrowing techniques with an emphasis on creating a more refined form. Create, design, and pursue your own projects using one or both techniques. Demonstrations will include more complex forms and advanced techniques in throwing, handbuilding, and glazing. All firing options available. Independent Study Ceramics ACE21-5 BETH LAMBERT Ceramics Department Chair Wednesdays, 11 a.m. 2 p.m. $252 members, $315 non-members For intermediate/advanced students Develop and refine your handbuilding and throwing skills, and expand your range of forms through individual projects. Demonstrations will include more complex forms and advanced techniques in throwing, handbuilding, and glazing. Wheelthrowing in Studio 4 only. For students with moderate to extensive experience who have mastered basic centering and pulling skills. Integrating Color and Form for Earthenware ACE32-1 JULIE HOLT Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. Prerequisite: Beginning Handbuilding or equivalent Explore concepts of content, narrative, pattern, and abstract design on handbuilt earthenware forms. Learn about color theory and how to apply decorative elements to handbuilt and sculptural forms. Use slip, underglazes, and low fire techniques while developing a personal voice in your work. Materials fee of $20 payable to instructor at first class. Learn to throw a cylinder, mug, bowl, vase, and flower pot. Discover how to finish pots using standard decorating and glazing techniques. Bring towel to each class. This class is an introduction to the potter s wheel for beginning students only. Intermediate Throwing ACE07-1 KELLY EDWARDS Tuesdays, 6:30 9:30 p.m. Prerequisite: Introduction to the Wheel or equivalent Take your throwing skills to the next level. Continue to develop basic skills such as trimming and pulling handles, as well as throw more complicated forms such as serving bowls, lidded vessels, platters, and altered forms. Work at your own skill level and progress at your own rate. For experienced students who have mastered basic centering and pulling techniques. Classes will present a broader discussion of sculptural forms beyond the figure and how best to incorporate narrative elements. Learn to form, texture, and finish work to bring your ideas to life. Each class includes time to share insights, inspirations, or ask questions. SPECIAL WORKSHOPS Soda Workshop AWS-CE-05-1 DAIN COUCH, Guest Instructor 2 Sessions: July 14 & 28 Saturdays, 1 3 p.m. $24 members, $30 non-members Prerequisite: Basic Handbuilding or equivalent Explore the soda firing process in our soda kiln. Learn about soda glazes, slips, and wadding. Bring 2 3 small, leather hard pots for applying flashing slips and 2 3 small bisque pots to glaze. Examine glazes and compare results during the second session. Electric Kiln Basics Workshop CEE-7/14/2018 BETH LAMBERT, Ceramics Department Chair 2 Sessions: July 14 & 28 Saturdays, 1 4 p.m. $60 members, $75 non-members Specifically designed for educators, this class will cover the basics of operating and maintaining an electric kiln. Topics will include evaluating existing kilns and kiln furniture, pros and cons of different types of kilns, planning for future kiln purchases, loading, firing, and basic troubleshooting. DRAWING Beginning Drawing or the equivalent is strongly recommended for all intermediate or advanced drawing and painting classes. Learn to use line, value, composition, and illusion of depth in an image. Explore different drawing materials. Each student will create a course of action that includes overarching concept, number of drawings, materials, and other details. Includes one-on-one guidance and group critiques. Painting & Drawing Open Studio AOS-PA-DR-01-1 Tuesdays, 9 a.m. 12 p.m. $150 members, $187 non-members Need extra studio time and an opportunity to create in a group setting? Students are invited to paint or draw in any medium. Instructor will be on hand to answer questions. Values in Charcoal ADR37-1 NEW! 4 Sessions: July 20 August 10 Fridays, 1 4 p.m. $77 members, $96 non-members For intermediate/advanced drawing and/or painting students Explore the depth and power of value through the medium of charcoal with Jeremy Couch. Learn how he creates subtle variations and changes in his drawings and creates such dramatic illusions of light and shadow through the use of an incredibly versatile medium. DRAWING WORKSHOP The Dramatic Figure with John Lucas AWS-DR-06-1 JOHN LUCAS, Guest Instructor 1 Session: June 30 Saturday, 10 a.m. 4 p.m. $104 members, $130 non-members Some (medium) experience recommended. Funny Book veteran John Lucas returns to the Museum School to share his insight into creating the dramatic figure! Join John as he delves into the use of perspective, foreshortening, silhouettes, and other techniques to create drama and intensity in the human form. Learn how a pro creates the dramatic effects seen in the world of comics! GLASS Students supply their own glass see the Glass Fusing Supply List on AAC website for glass sources and cost information. Community-use tools are available for use during class in the studio. Tuition includes cost of firings. Glass fusing does not include glass blowing or flame working. DAY CLASSES Enameling Studio AJE77-1 BURKE JOHNSTON 5 Sessions: July 24 August 21 Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. $132 members, $165 non-members Glass meets metal to produce an astounding array of effects. Beginners will learn simple techniques and then join more experienced students to create finished pieces. Copper for two projects and all enamels are supplied. A materials fee of $10 is payable at the first class. Beginning Jewelry AJE103-1 LAURIE SMITH PRUD HOMME Wednesdays, 9 a.m. 12 p.m. $238 members, $297 non-members This class introduces students to basic silversmithing skills, including torch soldering, surface embellishment, bezel setting, and cold connections. Students will produce several pieces of jewelry, which may include simple earrings, pendants, rings, and a short length of chain. The materials fee (due at the first class) will provide a kit of consumables, including silver, for between $50 $100 depending on current silver market. Bronze clay is a good introduction to metal clay and is an economical starting material. JEWELRY + SMALL METALS WORKSHOPS Characters from Found Objects AWS-JE-27-1 JANN GREENLAND Jewelry + Small Metals Department Chair 3 Sessions: July 13, 20 & 27 Fridays, 10:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. $45 members, $56 non-members Bring your collection of found objects and explore possible relationships between them, creating characters similar to those in Jann Greenland s recent What Might Be exhibition. Create wire mounts for the objects and secure them to a wood panel. $20 kit fee payable to instructor at beginning of first class. Mixed Metal Inlay AWS-JE-28-1 LAURA BROOKS 1 Session: August 4 Saturday, 9 a.m. 5 p.m. $40 members, $50 non-members Some soldering experience recommended. Add detail and complexity to your designs with three techniques that mix different types of metals into a single piece. Laminate metals using sweat soldering and rolling mill; join metals like a puzzle, using precise sawing, filing and soldering; and inlay silver solder into a channel carved into base metal. Found Object Sculpture AWS-JE-11-1 DONNELL WILLIAMS 2 Sessions: August 11 & 12 Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m. 3 p.m. both days $80 members, $100 non-members Design and create a three-dimensional sculpture using found objects, tidbits with an interesting shape, patina, or sense of mystery. Alter surfaces, using acrylic paint skins, rice paper, tissue paper, and other multimedia strategies. This will be a fun time to experiment and see what you do by letting go! Kirk will share his approach to painting creating with linear elements instead of just tones. PRINTMAKING NIGHT CLASS Beginning Relief and Intaglio APR05-2 ALLIE THOMPSON Mondays, 6 9 p.m. $178 members, $ 222 non-members Learn the basics of printmaking in this introductory class. Instruction includes how to use the press and use cutting tools. Class provides a basic understanding of printmaking concepts and prepares the student for more advanced classes. The Love of Litho APR07-1 MELISSA GILL Guest Instructor 9 Sessions: June 20 August 22 (No class July 4) Wednesdays, 6 9 p.m. $160 members, $200 non-members Join Melissa Gill for this beginner-level class in polyester plate lithography. Bring your drawings, sketches, and collages and learn to transform them into reproducible fine art prints! Begin with a basic black and white print then quickly move on to color printing.
