ABOUT THE WORKSHOP PRESENTER: Sally Bwden-Schaible is a psychtherapist in private practice in Westbrk, ME and is funder f LivingWell, a center fr cultivating mind-bdy health and spiritual grwth thrugh practices f mindful awareness, creative expressin, and integrated care. She is a Licensed Clinical Prfessinal Cunselr (LCPC) with 30 years f cunseling experience, is natinally certified as a Clinical Mental Health Cunselr (CCMHC) and is certified as an Apprved Cnsultant in Clinical Hypnsis by the American Sciety f Clinical Hypnsis (ASCH). She prvides individual and grup (a cntemplative mdel) clinical supervisin/cnsultatin t mental health prfessinals, and she taught fr many years with Reid Stevens in the Cunselr Educatin prgram at the University f Suthern Maine (Religin and Spirituality in Cunseling and Mind/Bdy in Cunseling). In the Scial Wrk department f the University f New England (UNE), she taught Mindfulness and Meditatin in Scial Wrk. 3 2018 Cntinuing Educatin fr Mental Health Prfessinals Wrkshp Presenter: Sally Bwden-Schaible MS, LCPC, CCMHC Wrkshp Descriptins: February 2 r 14: Buddhist Ethics, Cunseling Ethics: cmparative & cmplementary practices (pssible 4 hurs f ethics fr re-licensure*) A cmmn thread running thrugh the wisdm traditins f the wrld is the entreaty t d n harm. A unique aspect f Buddhism, ne f these wisdm traditins, hwever, is the specificity and detail f the guidance ffered fr living life in ways t minimize harm dne t thers, including all sentient beings, and t neself. At the center f Buddhist psychlgy and philsphy is sīla, the Pali wrd fr ethical/mral practice, mrality r virtue. Sīla is ne f the aggregates (categries) f the Eightfld Path (the ther tw the cncentratin aggregate and the wisdm aggregate), the practice f which can significantly lessen harm dne and the suffering that results frm unskillful, inapprpriate actins f thught, speech, and actin, including the ways we use ur time. Buddhism has been described as a religin, as a philsphy, as an ethics, and as a psychlgy. In this wrkshp we will cnsider hw Buddhist teachings as an ethics cmplement the ethical guidelines f ur mental health and healthcare prfessins. Please bring a cpy f yur prfessin s cde f ethics, and I will prvide relevant Buddhist texts, cmmentaries, and resurce infrmatin. Als, bring a cunseling practice situatin yu might like t discuss. We will spend ur time tgether examining ways Buddhist teachings may (r may nt) be relevant t ur mental health and healthcare prfessinal practice. *Please nte: While I believe the wrkshp is apprpriate and relevant, I cannt guarantee its acceptance fr the 4 hurs f ethics required by yur prfessinal bard fr re-licensure. 1. Participant will identify ways that the ethical guidelines prvided in Buddhist teachings can cmplement the ethical standards f prfessinal cunseling/healthcare practice. 3. Participant will explre if, when, and hw it is apprpriate t utilize Buddhist ethics in ne s prfessinal practice. March 23 r 28: Being with Suffering: n lss & change As mental health and healthcare prfessinals we face the pain and suffering f lss every day ur client s/patient s pain and suffering, as well as ur wn. Peple wh walk int ur ffices are struggling t understand and cpe with sme kind f lss frm a child getting nt the schl bus fr the first time t the dying & death f a belved parent. Lking carefully, deeply enugh we can see the interdependent relatinship between lss and change. One desn't ccur withut the ther: with change, even psitive change, there is a kind f lss; with lss there is, f curse, change. And, ur understanding f these inevitabilities and hw we respnd t them, with an awareness f their intercnnectedness, greatly affect the experience and quality f ur lives. 3

4 In this wrkshp we will investigate, frm a Buddhist perspective, ways f being with the inevitable pain f being fully human while als investigating ways f respnding t the experience f pain that help r hinder the quality f ur lives. Cre Buddhist teachings will be presented in ways that can cmplement ur psychtherapeutic/cunseling appraches when cunseling clients, prviding us with a deeper understanding f suffering and the rts f suffering. We will read relevant Buddhist texts, participate in discussin, sit in meditatin, and reflect individually and as a grup n what we have learned frm the wrkshp experience. 1. Participant will explre the relatinship between change and lss using cre Buddhist teachings and mindfulness meditatin as a way t facilitate deeper understanding f this relatinship. 2. Participant will reflect n hw cre Buddhist teachings and mindfulness meditatin can cmplement western psychlgical theries and mdels when cunseling clients/patients as they deal with the inevitable, but challenging realities f change and lss, including dying and death. 3. Participant will experience thrugh mindfulness meditatin the subtleties f dynamic, mment-t-mment change and lss. 4. Participant will practice respnding t subtle change and lss in ways that, with cntinued practice, can imprve the verall quality f ne s day-t-day life, even when faced with significant change and lss such as dying and death. 5. Participant will identify cautins and cnsideratins related t recmmending mindfulness meditatin practice t clients/patients. 6. Participant will take away resurce infrmatin helpful fr daily practice: reading references related t cre Buddhist teachings, website lcatins, app resurces, etc. April 6 r 18: Living a Successful Life: the language f cmpassin & cmpassinate actin in healing relatinships Grwing up in Western sciety, we have been cnditined t believe that independence, cmpetitin and hard wrk are the factrs that lead t a successful and, therefre, happy life, and if we are nt successful and happy it is because we and/r smene else and/r sme circumstance is at fault. The ensuing judging and blaming ften undermine healthy relatinships, whether twards thers r twards neself. While we can certainly think f individuals wh appear t have achieved success and happiness the American way, hw many thers have we met fr whm this has nt been the case? Verbal and nn-verbal messages we regularly receive (and give) reflect, ften uncnsciusly, the cre attitudes and values f the rugged and fiercely cmpeting individualism f ur culture. Indeed, ne des nt need t experience vilence and abuse and extrardinary stress t feel debilitating fear, shame and insecurity the all-t-frequent emtinal byprducts f messages f expectatin, cmparisn and judgment we receive daily. As cunselrs, educatrs and healthcare prviders we all t ften see the harmful effects f this apprach t life. In this wrkshp we will explre hw such messages detrimentally affect the quality f ur lives: the ways we relate (thught, speech and actin) t urselves and t thers; ur ability t be fully present in ur lives; and ur ability t live life fully, including living ur full ptential. We will explre hw mindfulness practices bringing what is uncnscius int cnsciusness---are true mindfulness practices nly when integrated with qualities such as kindness and cmpassin. We will lk specifically at the cultivatin f cmpassin, beginning with the language f cmpassin (alngside mindfulness), as a vehicle fr healing. And, we will see that thrugh such healing, ne des nt need t cmpete and succeed in the Western, American way t be happy and cntent with life. 4

Participant will experience hw mindfulness practices integrated with cmpassinate actin can cntribute t health and well-being as individuals, in relatinships with thers, and in the greater sciety as a whle. May 11: Transfrming Wrds: entering int The Peace f Wild Things *.. I cme int the peace f wild things wh d nt tax their lives with frethught f grief. I cme int the presence f still water. And I feel abve me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. Fr a time I rest in the grace f the wrld, and am free. frm * The Peace f Wild Things, Wendell Berry Caregiving is a universal activity with emtinal, physical and spiritual effects experienced by thse ffering the care and thse wh are the recipients. Nature is, fr many, a place f slace and healing we are, after all, a part f nature. This wrkshp addresses these tw universals: the activity f caregiving and ur being a part f nature. As caregivers, we knw hw the mind-bdy-spirit can becme deeply weary when tending t the lives f thse needing ur listening ears, ur able mind and bdy, and ur lving heart. Fr many f us, caring fr thers ften takes precedence ver caring fr urselves. And, we may push aside the warning signals f wearing ut until they can n lnger be ignred: we becme irritable and resentful, get sick, lse cnnectin with friends and lved nes, and feel s miserable and alne that ur ability t d what it is we truly want t d care fr thers is unsustainable, n lnger what we can r even want t be ding. In this wrkshp, we will explre ne way the reading f petry t preempt such sul-fatigue. While spending time in nature walking in the wds, sitting in the sun, swimming in a lake is a surce f nurishment and renewal fr many peple, it may nt always be feasible t g t a beautiful and restful place in nature. At such times, engaging the senses and the imaginatin thrugh the reading f a pem can prvide a meditative respite. The pems selected fr this wrkshp bring the natural wrld t us when we are unable t g t it. We will read pems ut lud, experiencing the pwer f wrds t nurish and replenish. Yu will leave with a number f surces fr pems and with an understanding f the transfrmative pwer f petry. (If yu wuld like, please bring ne r tw pems that yu have used in yur cunseling/caregiving practice r that yu think wuld be apprpriate.) The fcus f the wrkshp is n reading already written and published petry, rather than writing petry as a creative and/r therapeutic expressin; and, it is nt abut reading petry as an evcative therapeutic interventin, but using it as a meditative means fr slwing us dwn, bringing attentin int the here and nw thrugh engaging ur senses, and cnnecting us with the renewing aspects f nature 1. Participant will experience the renewing and nurishing elements f the natural wrld thrugh the reading f petry that engages the senses and the imaginatin; 5

Participant will identify pems and resurces fr accessing petry that can be integrated int a sustainable plan f self-care fr neself and that can be used when assisting clients/patients in develping their self-care plan. June 15: Mindfulness in Nature: healing practices fr the mind-bdy As an experiential, mindfulness-in-actin wrkshp, we will spend ur mrning tgether hiking Great Pnd Muntain in Orland, ME. At the tp f the muntain we will participate in a mindfulness mvement practice (ffered by Francis McCabe) and, befre ur descent, we will mindfully eat ur lunch (BYO) tgether. Our time will invlve extended perids f silence, with the ccasinal guided meditatin ffered t prvide a framewrk fr pening ur senses t what is in and arund us. The intent f this experiential wrkshp is t see fr neself the healing and restrative effects f being in nature as part f nature t experience ur interdependence with rather than ur separateness frm, r cntrl ver, the natural wrld. Time will be given fr written reflectin and, at the end f the wrkshp, we will take time fr grup reflectin. 1. Participant will experience mindfulness practices invlving activity and mvement and being with thers fr extended perids f silence. 2. Participant will practice bserving with mindfulness ne s mind-bdy as part f the natural wrld and as it relates t the varius mental, physical and material cnditins (including challenges) encuntered n the hike. 3. Participant will identify benefits f such experiences t mind-bdy health and well-being. 4. Participant will apply insights gained frm the wrkshp experience in the develpment f a sustainable self-care plan fr neself. 5. Participant will gain insights frm the wrkshp experience applicable when cunseling clients/patients in their effrts t create a sustainable self-care plan as part f their mental health treatment plan. PLEASE NOTE: This wrkshp will nly be ffered thrugh the Luna Cttage lcatin in the Penbsct Bay Regin. The hike up Great Pnd Muntain is apprximately ne mile.
