3 Instlltion of Pnels Roof Pitch Gulf Cost roofing pnels require certin degree of pitch to ensure proper wter dringe. Florid Building Code llows minimum pitch of 2/12 for Gulf Ri pnels s long s lp screws nd selnt re pplied to the lps to prevent wter from siphoning over the ris (see Fig. 5 on p. 4). Lp screws nd selnt re optionl when the pitch is 4/12 or greter (4/12 pitch mens tht there is 4 inches of rise for every 12 inches running horizontlly). As generl principle, the less steep the roof, nd the more necessry lso tht selnt e used t ll side-lps. Consult our representtive for recommendtions for your prticulr roof pitch, nd out roofing options if you hve less thn 2/12 pitch. Roof Preprtion Oil-cnning is wve-like, rippled ppernce extending up the length of the pnel fter it hs een instlled on the roof. Any irregulrities in the roof, including uneven plywood joints, wrped plywood, uneven trusses, poor ppliction of underlyment, the use of utton cps with felt pper, etc., cn promote oil-cnning. Cre should e tken to provide flt, uniform surfce on which to ttch the pnels. See pge 6 for more detils. Roof Appliction Pnel instlltion should egin t the gle end of the roof opposite the previling rin-ering wind (this will provide dded ssurnce ginst wind-driven rin eing forced under the lps). Mesure one pnel width in from the roof edge. At this point chlk line from ridge to eve. Plce the leding edge of the first pnel long this line. It is extremely importnt tht this pnel e lid squre to the eve nd ridge so tht the remining pnels will line up squre on the roof frme. It is wise to hve person t the eve nd t the ridge to ensure tht the proper pnel coverge is eing mintined cross the roof. Also e sure tht the pnels re properly side-lpped (see fig. 7 on pge 7). In pplictions where end-lpping is necessry, the upper pnel on the slope should lp over the pnel tht is lower on the slope y out 12 inches. Lesser roof pitches require greter mount of pnel overlp. All end-lp pplictions should use two horizontl rows of utyl selnt tpe cross the pnel nd proper fstening to provide mximum wter sel. An overhng of 2 to 3 inches on the eve is recommended to provide drip edge, while only 1 inch overhng is necessry where gutters re used. The open pnel ris t the eve cn e seled with inside closures. Trimming nd Cutting Steel Pnels The est device for cutting steel pnels cross the profile is either hnd snips or niler. Nilers, nd especilly Crorundum ldes on electric sws, however, do hve tendency to either leve hot metl prticles tht cn urn pint surfces or to leve rust mrks on pnels nd trim. The sme is true of ny filings left on the roof cused y the ppliction of screws. Cre should e tken to rush ll such prticles from roof surfces fter ppliction. To cut pnels lengthwise: Note crefully where the pnel is to e cut, nd, using strightedge, score deeply down the length of the pnel with shrp-pointed utility knife. Folding the pnel long the score mrk, nd ending ck gin if necessry, should produce clen rek in the pnel. 5 Ordering Roof Pnels nd Screws Cre should e tken to order pnels of the correct length to void hving to mke corrective mesures fter purchse. Pnel lengths should fll 2 to 3 inches short of the ridge when vented ridge is desired, nd should extend 2 to 3 inches pst the eve to llow sufficient drip edge (except s noted on pg. 3 concerning gutters). When roof trnsition is involved, pnels of the upper portion should e ordered short to llow plcement of the trnsition flshing (see digrm on p. 10). The Gulf Cost sles personnel re redy to ssist customers with informtion specific to their prticulr roof. Specilly-wshered screws pplied through the flt of the metl is the most recommended method used to ttch roofing pnels. 1-inch screws cn e used if penetrtion of only ¾ inch is either necessry or desired; otherwise, 1½ inch screws re usully recommended. 2½ inch screws re lso ville, nd re often used y those who dhere to through-the-ri fstening, nd for ridge-cp ppliction. See pges 6 nd 7 for more informtion on screw spcing nd ordering. Ordering nd Applying Trim The most common flshing for metl roofing is the ridge cp, which is used t the pek of roof where two opposing roof slopes join. Other flshings include trnsition flshing, end wll nd sidewll flshings, nd vlleys (see digrm on right for ppliction). Eve trims include gle flshing nd eve drip, either of which re often pplied ove fsci trim. When roof pitch exceeds 5/12 ( 5 inch rise in 12 inches), the slope of the roof should e mentioned when ordering ridge cps, endwlls, nd eve drip. When steeper roof slope meets lesser slope, oth slopes should e mentioned when ordering trnsition flshing. At the gle edge the use of gle trim dds to the ppernce of the structure nd protects the fly-rfter, nd sidewll flshing is used where the side of pnel utts up ginst n djcent wll. In either cse, the instller should e creful to sel etween the gle rke or sidewll nd pnel with utyl selnt tpe, nd to fsten the rke every 6" to 12" up the slope of the roof with the pproprite screws. If eve drip is used on the gle, the numer of 90 degree eve drip should e specified seprtely from tht used on the drip edge when ordering. To prevent penetrtion of wter, insects, nd deris t the ridge, outside closures should e inserted etween the ridge cp nd the top end of the pnel. Screws re pplied through the ridge cp, closure, nd ri in t lest every other ri of the pnels. At lest 1½" (or preferly 2½") screw should e used for ttching ridge cps. Self-drilling lp screws cn lso e used to ttch ridge cps. Keep Mterils Dry! Pint nd finishes of Gulf Cost pnels nd trim re designed to withstnd severe rin nd wet wether conditions. Neither pint, glvnized, or Glvlume finishes, however, re designed to e in continuous contct with wter for long periods of time. Since deris, insects, nd lowing rin cn find esy ccess under the ridge cp, closures re required to either completely or prtilly sel the opening. 13 GR-2 Outside Corner The GR-2 Rke nd Corner cn e used s gle trim or corner for metl-sided uildings. As n lterntive, the smller EF-1 or the GR-1 (oth on p. 11) cn lso used s gle rkes, nd the PC-5 (elow)or the GR-1 s corners. Customizing rkes or corners is often necessry due to their lnding on pnel ri. Both the GR-2 nd the IS-2 cn e ordered s custom trim items y specifying custom dimensions or. 15 Gutters Gulf Cost Supply produces 29-, 26-, nd 24- guge gutters in either 5- or 6-inch widths (depth is pproximtely equl to width). All gutters should e ordered specific to the pitch of the roof. Downspouts re ville in 3"x4" (for 5- inch gutters) nd 4"x4" (for lrger gutters). End cps should e ordered t the sme time s the gutters to ssure custom fit. Specil hngers fit into the pnel ri nd under the gutter lip.
