There is a Paint in each month on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 5:30pm to 8:30 pm at the Paramount Visual Arts Sudios for all CMW members. We just paint and sometimes share snacks we bring.

This is a wonderful space, large and quiet. There is no charge. The club has coffee there so we make a pot.

1 Watermarks Newsletter for the Central MM Watercolorists June 2015 Presidents Message, Stef was called out of town suddenly and will return soon. The summer newsletters will be briefer as we do not have member meetings but we do still get together. There is a Paint in each month on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 5:30pm to 8:30 pm at the Paramount Visual Arts Sudios for all CMW members. We just paint and sometimes share snacks we bring. It is a lot of fun and a chance to paint. The dates are: June 9, July 12, and August 11, 2015 Also several CMW members are meeting at the Watab Town Hall on Thursdays also just to paint. This is a wonderful space, large and quiet. There is no charge. The club has coffee there so we make a pot. This wonderful space is through the kindness of the Watab Township and their Secretary, our own Pat Spence. Thank you, Pat and the township supervisors. The CentraCare exhibit was cancelled due to information we did not receive unfortunately. Stef has worked tirelessly to re- connect directly with CentraCare and has rescheduled a new exhibit for Sept. 1. We will not be going through Visual Arts Minnesota. Robyn contacted everyone immediately and will use the new dates. There is some exhibit overlap this fall so please consult the Calendar pages very frequently in the newsletter and especially on the website at Mary Buhl continues to be our outstanding webmaster. She will work directly with you to help get your paintings onto the website even sitting beside you while you learn. This is pretty darn unusual to have such a great resource available. Contact Derick at Bonnie has supplies you can buy if you need any. 2. Need a ride to meetings or events? Contact a board member and we will get you connected. The CALENDAR BELOW has many opportunities to exhibit one or two paintings. Try one. If you need help with the framing call a board member and we will help you find a framing mentor. The Art in the Park, July 16th is an exceptionally good place to start showing your work. It is casual, fun and you DON T have to price your work. You can just show it marked NFS (not for sale). 5. LAST DAY to enroll for the CAROL SPOHN WORKSHOP - JUNE 20, 2015 The workshop is on AUGUST 22, 2015 ALL DAY. THE COST IS $40 for members and $50 for non members. CAROL SPOHN WO RKSHOP AUG. 22, 2015 We all enjoyed the demonstration in March so much, we asked Carol Spohn to return for a full day workshop on Aug. 22, She has agreed. We have reserved the Watab Town Hall for this. The fee for members at $40 for the whole day including supplies (non members $50). Carol will pick the subject. 2

3 The Banner Painting Here is Robyn York s painting Edge of the Woods. Robyn has a unique style that often incorporates only three colors in her compositions and unusual viewpoints. These two qualities make her pieces unique. Here is Edge of the Woods.

Come to the Paramount Visual Arts Center and paint for fun and friendship. JUNE 15-18, 2015 Lian Quan Zhen Watercolor Workshop 9-4pm Mon. Thurs. Paramount visual Art Center. JUNE 16, 2015 FREE DEMONSTRATION BY LIAN FOR MEMBERS 6-8:30. Lian will demonstrate Chinese painting first and then do a traditional watercolor. JUNE 19-22, 2015 Lian Quan Zhen Watercolor Workshop #2, 9-4pm Fri- Mon. Paramount Visual Arts Center JULY 1- AUG. 15, 2015 St. Cloud Library Exhibit. $5 per painting. Signup sheets will be at the June Paint In. Last day to give Robyn information (up to two paintings) is June 22, Hang time is 4-5pm July 1, The show title is Food for Thought. JULY 16, 2015 Art in the Gardens sponsored by the Munsinger Clemens Botanical Society. Sign- up sheets are at the meetings and Paint Ins. The show title is Small Treasurers. $5 per artist for as many as you want to bring. This is a great place to start exhibiting. You DO NOT have to sell stuff. Just show it. Time for the event is 10am- 7pm. Kerry Kupferschmidt is the coordinator ( ). AUG 1- SEPT 30 Paramount Exhibit. $5 per painting. You may show more that one painting. The Paramount is requesting that you donate 30% of your sale to Paramount Visual Arts. Sign- up deadline is July 27, AUG. 22, 2015 Carol Spohn workshop Batik Watercolor. All Day. $40 members, $50 non members. Contack Robyn York robyncmw@gmail.com. Sign up sheets will be at June Paint In. Last day to sign up is June 22, ANNUAL SHOW AND SALE AUG. 14, Paramount Visual Arts Center Granite Lounge 12-9pm. This is where you can have a booth or table to display all your work. We are very lucky to have secured this space. It is upstairs, in the glass lobby of the ticket sales area. We will likely also have part of the indoor lobby of the theater. The fee for an area has not been set yet but it will be VERY small.

I have never painted with one but, I hear they are really nice, hold tons of paint and water but spring back to a point which is the problem with most hair brushes.

8 Isn t my tail just perfect? You can tell by its bushiness, I m a male! COLORFUL PAINTING TIPS What the Heck is Kolinsky Sable? This is a case in which you get what you pay for which will be a lot! The gold standard is the Winsor Newton Series 7 brush. I have never painted with one but, I hear they are really nice, hold tons of paint and water but spring back to a point which is the problem with most hair brushes. This hair comes from a really cute vicious little guy, Mustela sibirica. It is the winter hair from the tail of the male Siberian Weasel not even a sable or marten at all. Some brushes are a combination of 40% winter female tail hair and 60% winter male tail hair. I have two of those. They bend over as the moisture floats onto the page ending up looking like a sloppy J. They are Richeson 6882 PURE KOLINSKY 14 and Cheap Joe s Legend Sable 10 Germany. I have learned to use them with a very light touch and I mean very light. So that s kind of a bummer. I also have a couple from CJ s Dragon s Tongue series featuring Tajmyr region sable hair again not a weasel but they are good at springing back and holding water/paint, and one CJ Lizard s Lick #6 round whose name conjures up a strange scene but basically the same brush with a long skinny point. Haven t figured out how to use it yet but it s kind of like a rigger. AND I just got some Creative Mark Rapsody Round Kolinsky Sable brushes that are performing really well note again not the weasel. But then none of them say weasel on the description so maybe they went for the cute name instead of the vicious bloodthirsty little varmit it is. In 2014 the U.S.Fish and Wildlife declared importation of Kolinsky fur illegal which is kind of odd since it is considered a pest in all of northern Russia and China but there you go. So brushes are hard to come by now unless the producer bought the hair from their dead little bodies before the ban. Yes, they are killed before they are shaved. For some this will be the end of wanting one for others not so much. Anyway you know about the ban now. Some manufacturers that are here in the USA that have hair are: Escoda, Rosemary Brushes, Winsor Newton, Richeson. Isaby, Cheap Joe s and, Creative Mark. However they can no longer import already made brushes from their international locations. Happy Painting, Bonnie
