1 Marilyn Clerment Watermarks The Newsletter of the Central Minnesota Watercolorists October 2014 A Message from the President, Stef Young. Welcome. Yes, welcome is a word that came to mind as I pondered what to include here. The sere,dusty/musty scent of harvesting and drying leaves; greens seceding to yellows and oranges, pinks, reds and browns; crisp rustling, school kids bustling; daylight losing weight to dark; all this remodeling infuses a welcome energy. This same energy was felt at the annual dinner September 8 th held at Watab Town Hall. Pat Spence, coordinator of the Hall use, welcomed us and helped with audio- visual equipment, set up, and decorating. Marilyn Clement greeted folks with a welcoming smile and helped Robyn with registration and admin duties. Folks enjoyed the chicken supper catered by Henri s, renewed their memberships, and signed up to exhibit at Rivers Edge Convention Center and Paramount venues. Our guests, Melissa Gohman, Director of the Visual Arts Center(VAC), enthusiastically welcomed CMW as a new partner and Jennifer Penzkover, Coordinator for the St. Cloud Arts Commission, provided an upbeat description of her position and the Art- o- mat machine. Both put faces with names, and enhanced understanding of their organizations roles as resources to CMW and to the greater community. Mary Buhl gave a brief tutorial about the CMW web site. We welcomed Sandra Koep as a new member. Linda Addicott offered to take over the VP role sparing Mary to assume full time web site and FaceBook duties. A successful silent auction closed the gathering. January 2014 ONLINE Find Central Minnesota Watercolorists news and more at rg and on Facebook at September 17, the Great River Arts Visual Arts Committee welcomed the CMW board in Little Falls. Benefits and concerns about partnering with them were discussed. We have agreed to schedule a CMW show in February. September 27, Dan Mondloch and Anita Hendrickx gave demos and were good company to Mary Buhl
2 and I, representing CMW during the Paramount gala. Several patrons, Paramount board members, and staff were awed by Dan s new prints on boards and Anita s calligraphic painting with wine. Thank you Marilyn Clement, Pat Spence and Watab Township! Big thanks also go out to Jennifer and Melissa for taking time from their busy schedules and families to share with us. Thank you Bonnie, Robyn and Mary for your diligent attention to CMW business and event planning and success. We welcome your participation! We still need a person to fill a Member- at- Large position. That person will serve on the board and help with activities as needed. Welcome Sandra Koep, for joining us September 8. Welcome to the board and thanks, Linda Addicott, for stepping forward to take over the VP role sparing Mary to assume full time web site and Facebook duties. Be sure to let us know about the classes you are teaching, shows you re in, and special acknowledgments you receive. We want to provide support to your endeavors and get the news out about all things watercolor! See our web site and friend CMW on Facebook. Nunc cursus magna quis When the seasons shift, even the subtle beginning, the scent of a promised change, I feel something stir inside me. Hopefulness? Gratitude? Openness? Whatever it is, it's welcome. Kristin Armstrong Stef Young Congratulations, Sandra Driscoll, for designing the 2014 commemorative tee shirt for the Minnesota Chapter of Women On Wheels, a club of lady motorcycle enthusiasts. Marvelous color and Look at those Reflections!

There are usually circumstances where a few painterrs are unable to attend at the last moment so do not lose hope. The Paramount has NEVER had a class fill so fast without advertising, so CMW will discuss scheduling a second class when Lian has an opening in his calendar most likely in the fall of Check ourtwww.lianspaintings.com BIG NEWS : ) Starting with the January Paint In on January 12, 2015 (5:30pm- 8:30 pm), we will formally move into to our new digs at the Paramount Arts Center as our official meeting location. This has resulted from many hours of work creating a new more centrally located area with a wonderful painting mirror already in place, and some storage for several items used regularly at every meeting. Our President, Stef Young, worked diligently to come to a formal collaborative agreement with the Paramount Arts Center to gain this wonderful space for all of us resulting in a huge financial advantage to the club. In addition, the Paramount staff will set up, and take down the meeting area each month saving your board members many potential back aches. We look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with the arts community and regional arts center as our home.

8 COLORFUL PAINTING TIPS Sharon Nieters has Arches 140# cold press sheets for members to purchase at a very reasonable price. Contact her at dsnieters@inbox.com. Bonnie Schwichtenberg has large clear bags that hold either a matted ½ sheet or backed full sheet for members. She is ordering bags for 16 x 20 pieces and 11 x 14 also. Reach her at bswitz@cloudnet.com. If you need other sizes contact her now so she can order them. Brushes Part II stepping up. I have one correction for the very reasonable Loew Cornell LaCorneille brushes. They can be found on Jerrysartarama.com. The correct numbers are 7020 ultra rounds # 14, 10, 8 or 6, 2; # 7050 script #4, #7550 Flat wash 1, ½ and maybe their big 1 ½. All good buys. Moving on to Cheap Joe s American Journey Interlocked brushes with a dark green short handle. Super brush not multiple diameter filaments but split ends, which allow HUGE amounts of paint/water to be taken onto the brush. In fact so much paint that it takes patience to clean it completely. Then stepping up to two brands that are slightly more expensive but truly top performing and fall into the synthetic fiber type. These have multiple diameter filaments AND up to 5 different length fibers also. They truly mimic expensive Kolinsky Sable brushes at a fraction of the cost. Any size you now feel comfortable with. They are Blick Master Synthetic. ( I have a round #18 I simply love) and any Winsor Newton Scepter Gold II brush. As for true Kolinsky Sable that I could afford, I have 2 - Cheap Joe s Dragon s Tongue rounds (# 8 and 10). They have good spring and excellent paint holding. I am very careful using them to preserve the sharp point as long as possible. These is not a digging brushes I wet paint with. I have little personal experience with Escodaa, Isaby, or Da Vinci upper end brushes. All have expensive Kolinsky brushes and good reputations. But, be vigilent of any sable lable on a brush that is not REALLY expensive. It is likely to be too soft and will bend over while painting. I have two such brushes that do this. Practically useless!! : ( The gold standard with which to compare any Kolinsky Sable brush is the Winsor Newton Series 7 brush(s). Check out the price as a guide. In these professional brushes you get what you pay for. Note that most master teachers are VERY comfortable using synthetic brushes!! Happy Painting, Bonnie
