1 Sandra Driscoll WATERMARKS: NOVEMBER 2018 The Newsletter for Central Minnesota Watercolorists The President s Message - November 2018 We had excellent attendance at our October meeting. Thank you for coming. Professor Feinberg, using examples from art masters and particularly Georgia O Keeffe, gave us much to think about in terms of using color to move the viewer s eyes through a painting. Also, he gave examples of how the subtle use of different amounts of color can cause adjacent colors to be particularly pleasing and much more. We look forward to the November demo by Catherine Hearding who will base her presentation on color theory and selection. Susan is working to keep the thread of color harmony and use throughout our upcoming demos. Stay tuned for more information. If you want to start thinking about the President s Challenge for the February meeting, take a look at your color wheel. The challenge will be to feature a split complementary color scheme in your painting. If you want to use an interactive tool to select colors, you can search online. Perhaps the easiest to use is RapidTables.com Color Wheel Tool. Two other possibilities include Sessions College of Design Color Calculator and Paletton The Color Scheme Designer. There are many others available besides these three. ONLINE Find Central Minnesota Watercolorists on the Web at and on Facebook at Central MN Watercolorists As noted last month, please think about the May 2019 retreat. You can indicate your interest through the signup sheet at meetings or you can or call Yvonne.

2 Banner Painting by Sandra Driscoll Are we ready? For this upcoming landscape? (Except for our snowbird members)!!! Almost Frozen by Sandra Driscoll captures a typical Minnesota winter scene in her 17 x 31-inch watercolor. Note how she skillfully draws our eyes through the painting with the pathways of light, medium, and dark values. Excitement is created through Sandra s use of the complimentary colors of yellow-orange and blue-green. Other paintings by Sandra can be seen on the Central MN Watercolorist website in the Sales Gallery. This watercolor is listed at $170. News from CMW Members- Thanks for the Good News! Kerry Kupferschmidt is showing several paintings at the Spice of Life Tea Shop at 820 St. Germain Street in downtown St. Cloud. He has watercolors from the North Shore in Minnesota as well as a couple from his recent trip to Prague. They will be on display throughout the months of November and December. Let s all make a point to stop in. Marilyn Clement has had three paintings accepted in the first phase of the Sunniest Place on Earth Juried Art Show in Yuma, Arizona. We will eagerly await further news about her entries. Kathy Braud has achieved Signature Status in the NorthStar Watermedia Society. She received her certificate on October 18 th at the membership meeting in Roseville. Andy Evansen Workshop Twenty CMW members were immersed in the Andy Evansen workshop at the Paramount from October What an incredible teacher of watercolor technique, color mixing, and values!

3 Color News from the October Membership Meeting Dr. David Feinberg shared his wisdom on color through his slide presentation titled No Need to Fear Color with the Help of Georgia O Keeffe. He is a long-time faculty member at the U of M and student of notable color masters. Here are some of his presentation points: Georgia O Keeffe created strong, vibrant works with colors that glow with energy and vitality. What makes colors glow is their differences. She often selected only two colors for her paintings: her main color and one other that jumped one color on the color wheel from the complement to create a rich painting. One entire series used two colors and white. What makes colors glow is their differences with each other. There are no bad colors. Our eyes always look for the complement or the opposite. For example, if you use a light value, your eye will look for the dark value. If you use blue, your eye will look for orange. Use both hard and soft edges in a painting. The artist Milton Avery was a master with these border transfers. Identifiers of color are the Color Family, the Value, and the Intensity. Every artist needs pure, primary colors in his or her palette. Value is the degree of light and dark. Intensity is how much you dull down a color. Simultaneous contrast refers to the way that two different colors affect each other. One color will change how we perceive the tone and hue of the other color when the two are placed side by side. How do your colors react when they meet? A color s appearance will change in appearance by the color it is placed upon. Grays are created by mixing two complementary colors. Hans Hoffman taught about the interdependent relationship among form, color, and space. Colors creates push and pull with each other and create space. Your unconscious tells you what colors to see. Organic versus inorganic edges or large differences in color will create space. Reflect if you see problems. The simplest solution is the best. Don t be afraid of color. Lose yourself in your own ideas as you paint. Color Questions from Members These are a sampling of the Color Questions that were submitted to Susan at the meeting by members. It was great to get these questions answered by Dr. Feinberg: Is there an easy way to make use of the color wheel? What two colors should never be used together? How do you use vibrant colors and still create value contrast? Keep your color questions, color comments, and color tips coming to Susan at meetings or by contacting her by sjcekalla@jetup.net.

5 November 12, 2018 CMW Monthly Meeting 6 to 8:30 P.M. at Paramount Arts Center (Lower Level) The program will feature Catherine Hearding. Her presentation will incorporate a demo and how she makes color selections for her palette and her paintings building on Dr. David Feinberg s October presentation. Catherine is a self-taught, award-winning artist with more than 40 years experience. She teaches classes in basic watercolor technique, color theory, and composition at her studio in Lake Elmo as well as offsite at workshops throughout the US and abroad. I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn t say any other way things I had no words for. Georgia O Keeffe Membership Meeting Schedule Confirmed Your CMW Board is happy to announce the upcoming schedule. See the calendar in this newsletter for more details. Thank you to Susan Jensen-Cekalla for making the arrangements. All meetings are in the lower level of the Paramount Center for the Arts unless otherwise noted. 7 Ralph Carpenter Member of the Month I began working in watercolor (WC) about the time I retired in My wife Sandra spends a lot of time quilting, and I thought I should find something to keep me busy. I had spent over 45 years in the insurance business, I was clean shaven, my hair was short and well kept, & I went to the barbershop every other week. When I retired I took up watercolor, wood carving, and guitar lessons, let my hair grow out, entered the arts community, and became a hippy. I was lucky to have a friend who was part of a group of ladies who started an art studio and gallery in Waseca MN, and she showed me how to get started in WC with the proper brushes, paints, etc. I also began weekly hourly sessions with Jim Brenke at Jim s Little House of Art in Mantorville MN who charged me $5 per session (I couldn t go wrong there), but after a year of that Jim just kind of disappeared. (I guess my weekly $5 probably did not go far enough for this expenses). I took several classes through the Waseca group but soon they disbanded as well. Owatonna, my home at the time, had a small group of fine WC artists but many times when classes were scheduled through community ed they had to be cancelled for lack of attendees. So, anyway, we decided to move to St. Cloud in 2013 to be close to one of our sons and two grandchildren. That proved to be good for my WC experience as I soon found many class opportunities with community ed and instructors like Bonnie Schwichtenburg and Sharon Nieters and others and opportunities with Central MN Watercolor Society. My wife, Sandra, and I have two sons. Jim is here in St. Cloud with his wife Mary and our two grandchildren and the other son, David, lives and works in Berlin, Germany. I am active in my church preparing and hosting friendship lunches every other month. I am also active with SCORE as a volunteer mentor helping people requesting help in starting businesses or working with existing businesses to improve aspects of their business. I very much enjoy the Central MN Watercolorists, you couldn t find a more talented and nicer group of people. I am continuing to try and improve the quality of my work and hopefully can do more showings in the future.
