Margaret Werlinger WATERMARKS: OCTOER 2018 The Newsletter for Central Minnesota Watercolorists The President s Message - October 2018 First, I want to thank both those who planned and those who attended our annual dinner meeting in September. We had a good turn out and we had five new members register. We want to welcome them, and I hope everyone will get to meet them in upcoming meetings. New members include Jill Wotzka, Jann Schmidt, Donna Leis, Carolyn Lyschik, and Linda Wymar. We appreciate your input provided through our surveys. You provided many helpful thoughts and suggestions. At our most recent board meeting, we decided to add a June meeting next year to see how it might add to our calendar. Also, we appreciate suggestions for guest demo artists. Susan is working to add a suggested artist to the spring calendar for next year. I hope those who are interested in participating in the Paramount Lobby Show are thinking about paintings they wish to display. Thanks to Mary Buhl for coordinating this activity again this year. Mary needs your JPEG image and associated information (title of artwork, medium used, the price, a brief 1-2 sentence description of the piece, and size of framed painting) by October 18 th. As indicated in the general information sent out earlier, this is a firm date since the information is needed to produce a show catalog. ONLINE Find Central Minnesota Watercolorists on the Web at and on Facebook at Central MN Watercolorists In the more distant future, please think about the retreat scheduled for next May. You can indicate your interest through the sign up sheet at meetings or you can or call Yvonne.
Banner Painting by Margaret Werlinger Color of Autumn by Margaret Werlinger anticipates the rich fall pigments which we relish during October. Her technique of charging the watercolors and letting them blend on the leaves gives this painting interest. The painting is 23 x 19 inches. Margaret captures the beauty of nature so well in her paintings. News from CMW Members News from Kathy Braud: Minnesota Watercolor Society Fall Show at the Ames Center in Burnsville includes paintings by Kathy Braud and Judith Meyeraan. Juror is Calvin deruyter. Kathy Braud and Judith Meyeraan attended the reception for the 2018 Northstar Watermedia Society Juried National Exhibition on September 23 rd at the White Bear Center for the Arts. This show continues through October 18 th. Kathy Braud recently participated in the Joyce Ells Paint Out at a Lutheran camp in Amery, Wisconsin. She reports that the 35 participants had classes on pouring of acrylic paint on canvas with seeds of color that erupted. Kathy s 5-piece watercolor chicken paintings are on display at the Sprout Growers and Makers Market Place in Little Falls, made possible by an Art Place Grants endeavor. Pictured below are Ruffled Feathers 4 and 5.
2018 Annual Meeting & Dinner Thirty-four members and four guests attended our Annual Dinner Meeting on September 10 th at the Watab Town Hall. There was a great sense of comradery as returning members caught up with each other as well as welcoming five new members: Donna Lies, Kess Lyschik, Jann Schmidt, Jill Wotzka, and Linda Wymar. This brings our membership to sixty-six. If you haven t renewed your membership for 2019, please complete the membership form in this newsletter and bring it to the October meeting or drop it in the mail to Yvonne Schrank (address on last page). We tried a Silent Sale this year and are happy to announce that it netted $ Thanks to everyone who donated items for the sale and to all the generous bidders who went home with some new treasures! Mary Buhl showed us how to create our own page on the CMW website. It s a great way to get your artwork out there and it is free. Contact her if you would like further information or send her the information that she requested in her presentation. Thanks, Mary, for all your expertise and work in helping us promote our paintings. It is up to us to help keep the website art pages current. Pat Spence presented info on the 2019 Spring Retreat. See the separate article in this newsletter for more details. Twenty-one of our members indicated their interest in the retreat during the sign up at the Annual Meeting. We thank Gordon & Yvonne Schrank, our President & Treasurer, for organizing the evening. Special thanks to Yvonne for making all the lovely centerpieces and to Stef Young for donating the flowers. Marilyn and Dave Clement assisted with the set up and clean up details, and Marilyn and Susan Jensen-Cekalla welcomed everyone and got them registered. Thank you! Thanks to Mary Buhl for facilitating the Silent Sale and giving a presentation during our meeting on how to create your own webpage on the CMW site.
Thanks to Dody Mowan and the other 22 members who turned in their surveys. Your input is so helpful to the board. We have made the decision to add a June meeting based on your suggestions. Sharon Nieters welcomes two of our new members: Jann Schmidt and Jill Wotzka. Treasurer Yvonne kept busy renewing memberships for Dues provide the revenue for our programing throughout the year John Carter showed us his patent-pending Show N Go display rack for paintings. He reports that he got the idea from another CMW member at one of our shows and made this rack so that it can totally and easily be put together and taken apart in small sections. Way to go, John!!!
2019 Painting Retreat May 6-9 at Riverside Retreat Center in Cold Spring Due to the success of the 2018 retreat at Linden Hill in Little Falls, CMW is sponsoring a 2019 retreat at Riverside Retreat Center in Cold Spring. Sign up will continue until our February meeting (as space allows). Painting can begin as early as 8am on Monday morning and continue until 4pm on Thursday. Room check-in is at 3pm and check out is at 11am. Delightful themed rooms, a spacious conference room for painting, and free continental breakfasts are some of the amenities. Please plan to make your down payment of one-half the cost by the February meeting and final payment by the April meeting. 6 October 8, 2018 CMW Monthly Meeting 6 to 8:30 P.M. at Paramount Arts Center (Lower Level) Our program will feature David Feinberg, who will give a presentation titled No Need to Fear Color with the Help of Georgia O Keeffe. He will talk about the many ways of thinking about color in artistic decision making. The following topics will be presented: Push and pull of color creating space Grouping according to color, value, and intensity Sequencing and border transfers Counterbalancing color No such thing as a bad color all colors can be made to work Complex color identification and matching made simple Taste versus need in color choices The concluding section of the presentation will examine Georgia O Keeffe s use of color. David states she is a lifelong reference. David Feinberg was the main color instructor for the University of MN Twin Cities Studio Art Department for 32 years. He has a degree from Parsons School of Design, NYC, in Graphic Design; the State University of New York (SUNY) New Paltz in Art Education; and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan MFA in Painting. He received the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award and the University of Minnesota Board of Regents Outstanding Community Service Award.
John Carter Member of the Month I started painting a number of years ago, taking a local Community Education watercolor class to combat a serious case of cabin fever. Diane Woit was the teacher, and it was her encouragement that sparked my love of watercolor painting. Thank you, Diane! Since then I have taken watercolor classes and workshops from local, regional, and nationally known artists including Dan Mondloch, Jerry Korte, Skip Lawrence, and Doug Lew. Enjoyment for me comes from painting a variety of subjects: airplanes, landscapes, old buildings, scenes from my travels. I also enjoy trying out various styles and techniques; recently I have started painting more abstract and semi-abstract works, which I find quite fascinating. Some of my paintings hang in private homes in France, England, Costa Rica, and Chile. I have decided to expand my art work, so I am putting copies of my paintings on reusable bags. They are 14 x 16 inches and 9 x 10 inches varying in price from $5 to $10. I have also applied for a patent on a Show and Go display rack that I designed. There is photo of it with this newsletter s article about the Annual Meeting. I live in St. Cloud and am photographed above in my home art studio. The Bull Fight Reusable Fabric Bags Old Barn Door
