Sandra Driscoll WATERMARKS: MARCH 2018 The Newsletter for Central Minnesota Watercolorists The President s Message March 2018 We started the year with a great meeting on February 12 th. There was a good turn out, and we had two new members (Molly Olivier and Vas Wojtanowicz) and one who had been away for a while and renewed her membership (Sandra Theis). Our two new members even brought paintings for the challenge. We also discussed several topics such as color mixing, paper flattening and other ideas about paintings. In addition, we reviewed upcoming events and talked about having cards and prints made for the Arts in the Park sale. Thanks to all for turning out. Once again, please think about participating as a demonstration artist during the art crawls. It s fun and people like to see art in action. Also, please look about and see what paintings you have for the Good Shepherd Community show. As I mentioned last month, this is a very good venue for 40+ paintings. Another topic we discussed was our hope that members will update their web presence on our website. Please consider adding images if you haven t done so. We ll be talking more about that through the spring. There are still many final details to work out for the Linden Hills retreat and workshop. We ll try to keep everyone posted on that and upcoming exhibits. Quote for the Month: In watercolor, if you are not in trouble, then you re in trouble. I ran across this quote from Selma Blackburn and liked it. ONLINE Find Central Minnesota Watercolorists on the Web at and on Facebook at Central MN Watercolorists

Banner Painting by Sandra Driscoll Banner Painting It Caught by usan My Eye What a perfect subject for the President s Challenge at our February meeting. Sandra Driscoll patiently waited for these sweet subjects to make eye contact in order to capture a quick photo. She may have had a few tricks up her sleeve, too! Sandra s alternate title for the Summer painting, at Quarry which Park is now framed and in the possession of her niece, is Close Encounter at the Window. There were many oohs and aahs when Sandra placed her painting on the easel Membership Renewal in CMW Are you a current, 2018 member of CMW? The board extended the renewal date for 2018 to March 1 st, so that you could renew your membership without paying a penalty. After today, the membership fee, with the $5 penalty, is $30. Your membership gives you many benefits: priority for workshops, demos at CMW meetings by professional artists, the monthly newsletter, ability to participate in CMW shows and retreats, a free artist page and posting of your paintings for sale on the CMW website, and networking and support of other accomplished artists. There is a membership form at the end of this newsletter. If you haven t renewed your membership, mail your $30 check with the form to Treasurer Yvonne Schrank at 200 Glenview Loop, St. Cloud, MN Also, please invite others to join us. We need active membership to continue our programing. We all welcome new members Molly Olivier, Sandra Theis, and Vas Wojtanowicz. Shared Member News Kerry Kupferschmidt s painting, Summer at Quarry Park was accepted into the Arts in Harmony 2018 Annual International Show. It is on view now until March 16 th at Hopkins Center for the Arts. Congratulations to you, Kerry!

Easel Night: President s Challenge It Caught My Eye Gordon Schrank Yvonne Schrank Vas Wojtanowicz Jan Roering Molly Olivier Barbara Nelson Susan Jensen-Cekalla Rita Nelson Sandra Driscoll Pat Spence Paulette Swarthout Kathy Braud Sharon Houg Kerry Kupferschmidt President Gordon s theme allowed for a variety of interesting stories by fourteen CMW members who participated in his challenge. It was a fun night augmented by the addition of two new members who brought paintings. One of the benefits of Easel Night is learning from each other. Anita Hendrickx submitted the following for Easel Night even though she couldn t attend: the sets she painted for Guys and Dolls presented by St. Peter s Church in St. Cloud performed in February. Well done, everyone!!!

Waite Park Library Show: February This is a small venue but provides good exposure and community service by CMW members who participated. Our show was on display for the entire month of February. 5 CMW Monthly Meeting Monday, March 12, 2018 Kathy Braud, our own talented CMW member will do the demo for our March meeting on how to create cloud painting landscapes. She will demonstrate making grayscale versions of landscapes from our photographs. Kathy is a Signature Member of the Red River Watercolor Society and member and past board member of many art organizations. She is proficient in watercolor and participates in many shows throughout the year where her paintings are on display and win awards. We look forward to your demo, Kathy. Good Shepherd Show: April and May There is room for forty paintings in this show, a good venue with excellent lighting and good traffic, and the show is also a way for us to brighten days for the residents. We still need several more artists to participate. The hanging of the show will be on Monday, April 2 between 4 and 5 p.m., and the take down is Thursday, May 31 between 4 and 5 p.m. Please let Yvonne Schrank know if would like to take part. May 7-10 Spring Painting Retreat at Linden Hills & David Smith Workshop Thanks to all who helped CMW fully book the Spring Painting Retreat and David Smith Workshop in Little Falls. Check in time is 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 7 th and check out is Thursday, May 10 th at 11:00 a.m. We will accept names for a waiting list in case of cancellations. Let Yvonne Schrank know by or phone if you are interested. Everyone who is registered will receive an from Yvonne with your payment balance, which is due on or before the March meeting. Mail your check to Yvonne if you won t be attending the March meeting. The David Smith workshop will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday. Topic is Soft Floral. David will teach the process and benefits of working on soaked paper a valuable process he has incorporated in each American Watercolor Society painting. The subject will be a soft bouquet of flowers. The same process could be applied to any subject. Techniques used will include working on wet paper, creating different edge qualities to shapes, developing a painting through progressively darker values, glazing, and lifting. David recommends a painting board that paper will stick to when wet, such as plexi glass or the shiny, slick-coated Masonite. The board dimensions should be larger than the sheet of paper, which will be 11 x 15 inches. You will also need to be able to prop your board up at an angle. (A large tissue box will work, but an easel of some sort will work better). Here is the rest of his recommended materials list: Usual Supplies: palette, water container, masking tape, towels, tissue, large spray bottle, hair dryer, pencil/eraser, etc. If you have an ipad/tablet, he recommends bringing it to take demo photos/reference. Paper: one quarter sheet (11 x 15 ) of Arches Cold Press, 140 lb. paper will be provided with the skitch already on the paper. Please bring at least 2 more sheets for practice. Tools for lifting/softening highlights: stiff bristle brush or Fritch Scrubber. David s favorites are the #4 and #16 Fritch Scrubber (Cheap Joe) and the #2 Artisan Short Flat/Bright long-handled (Winsor & Newton).

Paint: David recommends the primaries: yellow, red, blue, and a dark (such as Payne s Gray, Indigo, or Neutral Tint). He will incorporate a number of colors, most likely: Winsor or Lemon or Joe s Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Sap Green, and Payne s Gray. Brushes: a variety of rounds and flats will work fine. David uses synthetics (Escoda, Robert Simmons, Loew-Cornell). He is currently using Escoda Rounds (Perla) size 3, 10, 12 (the Joseph Zbukvic set); Escoda Mops (Ultimo Tendo Syntethetic) size 14 & 18. If interested, these all can be found on the internet. Craftsmart (previously called Mona Lisa Graphite Paper) or Loew Cornell Gray Transfer Paper (at some arts and crafts stores, JoAnn Fabric, or online) and a colored ball-point pen (red works well). These leave a transfer that is hard to erase, BUT are dark, so you can see the lines through layers of paint that won t wash away when wet. If you choose another transfer paper, test it to make sure it will be dark enough to see after a couple washes of color and will not disappear or get too light when wet. Great River Regional Library in St. Cloud Show Our CMW Show at the St. Cloud Library has been confirmed for hanging on Friday, June 1 st between 4 and 5 p.m. and takedown on Friday, July 6 th between 4 and 5 p.m. We will have sign up sheets available at the March meeting. Cost is $5 to participate. 12 th Annual Art Fair in the Gardens Our Annual Art Sale will be part of the Munsinger Clemens Botanical Society s Annual Art Fair in the Gardens on Thursday, July 19 th from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. It s not too early to start planning your participation with smaller sized framed or matted paintings or cards. Contact Pat Spence to offer your help or with questions. Sign-up sheets will be available soon. Several local print shops can do your cards. Andy Evansen Workshop Fall 2018 Dates have been confirmed with the Paramount for our CMW Andy Evansen Workshop. It is scheduled for October 25 th 27 th, We have requested a 9:00 a.m. starting time each of the three days. Derick will notify us of the cost and time to register. Downtown St. Cloud Art Crawl Dates The Downtown Arts Council has announced the 2018 dates for the Art Crawls. They are: March 23, June 8, August 10, and November 2. We are asking CMW members to serve as demo artists during the evening art crawl times in June, August, and November. Gordon and Yvonne have volunteered for March. Again, sign-up sheets will be available at monthly meetings, or you can phone a board member to offer your involvement. You paint between the hours of 5 and 9pm and can bring cards and paintings to sell. It is very enjoyable. Reminder: CMW Website Gallery and Artists Pages One of the benefits of CMW membership is the option of having a personal artist page on our website. It is a public place to let others view your art work. You can also submit JPEG images of your paintings for sale. Contact Mary Buhl with any questions or to submit your art. A 2018 goal of CMW is to get the website artist s pages updated and to have many more members involved. It will be great to have your help in refreshing these pages on the CMW website.

2019 Demo Artists and Workshops Susan Jensen-Cekalla is our new Vice-President and is seeking your input on suggestions for monthly meeting demo artists for October and November and for a workshop provider in the fall of Please let her know of anyone that you think would be a good fit for our members. It is especially helpful if you have been to one of their workshops in the past. Thank you! Member of the Month Molly Olivier The first watercolor painting that I remember doing was in 2 nd grade when my mother put me in a watercolor class for adults because no one offered classes for kids. This young woman, maybe 22, accepted me and taught me for a full week. The picture was a little girl wearing a blue dress in a blue hat holding flowers. I have no idea what happened to that, but the whole experience put me a path of art that I flowed in and out for 46 years. Still to this day my mother has been my biggest cheerleader with use of my talent. My next amazing experience was taking an class with Mr. Jon Crane, a Christmas present from my parents, I learned to do mini washes to control my detail, as well as what salt could do to your painting to make rock or rust texture. I was sixteen. Since then I have been on my own with figuring out technique and style. In the early 90 s I joined a watercolor society in Rapid City hoping to find additional support and an outlet for my work. They concentrated on getting the artwork seen not how to build artist relationships or education. I felt completely out of my league! I have many spurts of inspiration painting intensely for months, and then life gets in the way and I set my brushes down. Being an empty nester, I now have more time to dedicate to my art and honing my skills and have been looking for a place or a group that I could expand my knowledge and painting time. Before Christmas I was buying presents at the Paramount Gift Gallery; I always look at the paintings there and the artist s bios. Many of the watercolor artists listed that they were members of the Central Minnesota Watercolorists. I noodled around on the web and found CMW s website and decided I needed to join. Nothing ventured nothing gained! I have only been a member for 3 weeks and I have been to the February meeting, painted at Watab Township and have completed two paintings. You people are awesome! You know how to encourage and support, so open to show others how you do your craft. I am very excited about finding a place where I can grow and learn, paying it forward when other new members join! My father is an outfitter and we take people to the back country of Yellowstone to experience the nature via horseback. In addition, we have rides in Custer State Park in the Black Hills to share the beauty of the Paha Sapa and watch the annual Buffalo Roundup in September. I have so many pictures of incredible scenery and animals that I have wanted to paint for years. I can hardly wait to dive into painting from those experiences because of the new energy that I have found in this group! Thank you so much for sharing your talent! -Molly Olivier
