Step 1 - Introducing the Georgia O Keeffe Slideshow Guide MOTIVATION BEGIN READING HERE I have something special for you today! Do you like special surprises? First, what is the name of this art program? (MEET THE MASTERS) You usually meet the masters by looking at their artwork and hearing about their lives. But our special surprise will let you meet our master today in a new, exciting way. Your special surprise is that today you get to hear the real voice of our master artist! She will tell you all about her artwork in her own words. Have you ever had a famous artist share her feelings and ideas with you while looking at her beautiful paintings? Well, today you will! Before we hear directly from our artist, let me introduce her. Today we will meet master artist Georgia O Keeffe. What do the dates under her name tell us? (YEARS OF BIRTH AND DEATH, POINT TO EASEL) What year did Georgia O Keeffe die? (1986) Georgia O Keeffe lived to be 98 years old! O Keeffe was a very popular and famous American artist. People wanted to know all about her life and about her art. So she agreed to be interviewed. What happens in an interview? (ANSWER QUESTIONS) That interview was recorded, and you will hear parts of it today. Are you ready to hear all about Georgia O Keeffe in her own voice and words? She was in her 90 s when this interview was done, so her voice is not always loud and strong. If you listen very carefully, though, you will be able to understand her. As we look at her first paintings, listen carefully to find out what O Keeffe sees in her mind. Click Start Lesson To Begin 1. WHITE ROSE II Click Audio I see shapes. It s as if my mind creates shapes that I don t know about. I can t say it any other way. I get this shape in my head, and sometimes I know what it comes from, and sometimes I don t. And I think with myself that there are a few shapes I have repeated a few times, and I haven t known I was repeating them until after I had done it. End Of Audio Continue Reading 1 GEORGIA O KEEFFE Ages 5 7 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

What did O Keeffe see in her mind? (SHAPES) Has your mind ever thought up a shape to draw or maybe just imagine? Well, besides just thinking up shapes, Georgia had the talent to beautifully turn those shapes into works of art, like you just saw. 2. PINK TULIP Can you easily tell what her shapes are? (NO) Are the shapes you saw REALISTIC? (NO) There is an art word that describes O Keeffe s way of painting shapes that are not realistic ABSTRACT. An ABSTRACT work of art doesn t look like a real thing. Please say abstract. Abstract art invites us to use our imaginations and feelings. 3. RED CANNA Have you ever collected something? Georgia had two special collections. Artificial flowers were one of the things she collected. Why do you think an artist would collect artificial flowers? (TO DRAW AND PAINT) Let s remember, though, were O Keeffe s paintings realistic or abstract? (ABSTRACT) So do her painting of flowers look just like them? (NO) I want you to pretend that you have a special camera to photograph a flower. (OPTIONAL: USE AN ARTIFICAL OR REAL FLOWER WITH LESSON) Your camera has a powerful zoom lens that brings you closer and closer to the flower. You see less and less of the flower as it is MAGNIFIED. Let s turn our zoom lens on now (PANTOMIME), and tell me what you see if you looked at the flower through your camera lens. What do you see? (JUST THE PETALS, STEM, CENTER) Click Back 2. PINK TULIP Georgia looked at her collection of flowers as if she had a zoom lens as part of her eyes. She zoomed in on a flower and painted it very large. Does this painting remind you of a flower? (YES) Why did O Keeffe want to paint her flowers so big? I ll let her tell you why. Listen. Click Audio There was a collection of paintings in New York that I would see every once in a while, and they had a new painting, but it was a floral painting, about 20 x 16 maybe. But the flower was beautifully painted, and I thought, now if I would paint that flower, just that flower, the size it is -- no one would ever look at it. But if I enjoy the flower, and I would paint the flower, I will paint it big, so they will have to look at it. 2 GEORGIA O KEEFFE Ages 5 7 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

End Of Audio Continue Reading Why did she paint flowers so big? (SO PEOPLE WOULD NOTICE THEM) Do you think her plan worked? (YES) She became very famous for her flower paintings. Let s see another beautiful painting by O Keeffe. Click Next Twice 4. BLUE AND GREEN MUSIC Besides the shapes in these paintings, what else catches your attention? (COLOR) Look carefully. Do you see more than one color of blue in this painting. (YES) Do you see several colors of green too? We call those different colors of blue and green, VALUES of color. Values of a color can go from very light to very dark. 5. SHADE AND TINT Do you know what O Keeffe added to a color to make it darker? (BLACK) Black added to a color makes a SHADE of that color. What would you add to a color to make it lighter? (WHITE) White added to a color makes a TINT of that color. Now I want you to picture in your mind, like Georgia O Keeffe, a painting of brown hills with so many values of brown it s impossible to even count them! Let s see if your picture looks anything like what O Keeffe painted. 6. THE MOUNTAIN, NEW MEXICO Do you see many values of brown? (YES) Have you ever pretended to be a color? Right now let s pretend that you are different values of brown, like O Keeffe used to paint these beautiful hills. If you see a tint where white has been added to your brown, show me by forming a T with your hands (DEMONSTRATE). If you see a shade where black has been added, curve your hand like the top of an S (DEMONSTRATE). Are you ready? Show me the sign for tint for shade. Good. Let s begin. I will point to a value of brown in this painting, and you give me the right hand signal. (POINT TO SEVERAL DIFFERENT VALUES) Good job! Now that you know all about color values, you will be painting tints and shades in your art projects. Let s take a different look at beautiful hills painted by O Keeffe. 3 GEORGIA O KEEFFE Ages 5 7 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

7. BLACK CROSS, NEW MEXICO Georgia O Keeffe lived in the United States. Her favorite place to visit and to live was the state of New Mexico. New Mexico is mostly desert. It is hot and dry with little rain. Georgia would hike all over the hills and desert and set up her easel and paint until the daylight ran out.are the hills in the foreground or background? (BACKGROUND) What is the big, black shape in the foreground? It s not a window. (CROSS) When you do your art activity, you will be drawing and painting beautiful New Mexico hills like these. Is each hill a different color? (YES) That s how you will paint your hills, too, with shades and tints of your colors. Remember I told you Georgia liked to collect things. Do you remember what she collected? (ARTIFICIAL FLOWERS) She had another collection, a very unusual one. I bet you have never heard of this collection before! Let me show you. 8. PELVIS WITH SHADOWS AND THE MOON What did she collect? (BONES) As she hiked across the hills and desert, she would pick up the bones she found. What was it about bones that Georgia O Keeffe liked? (SHAPES) - 9. RED, WHITE, AND BLUE She loved the beautiful shapes in the skulls and bones and thought they were very lovely. She would put them on different colored backgrounds like you see here. After hearing her voice and seeing her paintings, would you like to see a photograph of Georgia O Keeffe? She was married to a famous photographer who took hundreds of pictures of her. Do you think she enjoyed posing for him? 10. PHOTO OF ARTIST BY ALFRED STIEGLITZ Georgia said it drove her crazy to sit still for photographs! Do you sometimes feel like that? Can you see what Georgia is painting? (FLOWERS) Do you think she will paint it just the size it is? (NO) Show me how big she would paint it. (VERY LARGE) Now it s time to review all you ve learned about Georgia O Keeffe in a fun way. Click Next To Begin Quiz 4 GEORGIA O KEEFFE Ages 5 7 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

The last few pages of this section contain the Art Activity for Georgia O Keeffe. This stepby-step outline will be a guide for instructing your child(ren) through the activity. The parent/instructor should review all steps necessary to complete this project before beginning any work. Cut out the Artist Profile Slip below and attach it to the back of the completed art project. Georgia O Keeffe (oh-keef) - American Georgia O Keeffe was a famous female American artist. Her modern desert and botanical paintings inspired our young artists as they painted in her style. Her love of the American Southwest was reflected in her work. Place the O Keeffe print and demonstration papers where they can be easily seen. Arrange materials nearby. SET-UP [ 5 minutes ] Distribute the following materials to each child: SUPPLIES: Brush, Watercolor Crayons, and Black Crayon Distribute water cups and water after students have finished using Watercolor Crayons. PAPER: White paper, newsprint, paper towel and artist profile slip ORIENTATION [ 5 minutes ] What is special about Georgia O Keeffe s paintings? (COLORS AND SHAPES) Today you will paint a LANDSCAPE of hills just as Georgia O Keeffe would have. You colored tints and 9 GEORGIA O KEEFFE Ages 5 7 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

shades with crayons in your Learning Packet; now you will paint them in a landscape. You also practiced drawing hill shapes. I think you are ready to paint some hills with watercolor! Let s get organized so we can begin. DEMONSTRATION AND ACTIVITY Have the students repeat each step immediately with their materials. ORGANIZE YOUR WORK AREA [ 2 minutes ] 1. Place your newsprint horizontally (DEMONSTRATE) on your workspace, with your white paper on top. 2. Open your Payons and put them on a corner of your newsprint. 3. Put your brush and black crayon to one side. 4. Put your artist profile slip on one top corner of your workspace. DRAW THE HILLS [ 5 minutes ] Watch first and then follow to make a hill in the front, the FOREGROUND: 1. Use a pencil to very lightly draw a low hill in the front. It should start on one side of the page, near the bottom, and end on the other side. 2. Behind the first hill, draw a higher hill with a different shape or a higher curve (but not higher than the middle of the page). 3. Add more hills further back, for the BACKGROUND. Who remembers do things seem smaller or larger as they get further away? (Smaller) Good! Make the hills smaller each time! (Add smaller hills one at a time having the students follow. 5 to 7 hills are needed; leave 1/3rd or 1/4th of the page for sky.) THE PAINT CRAYONS [ 15 minutes ] 1. Start at the foreground hill at the bottom. Do things in the front seem brighter or lighter than things farther away? (Brighter) Choose a bright color. 2. Start coloring at the top of the hill. Sweep back and forth moving down a little with each stroke. Keep going in the same direction. Follow the shape of the hill. Don t press as hard on the Payon as you go down the hill; make it lighter each time. This will make a tint. 3. For the next hill, choose another bright color. Start at the top and use the same sweeping strokes following the shape of the hill. Remember to make a tint on each hill. 4. Continue coloring the hills with different colors to show contrast. As you get to the hills in the background, the colors should be much less intense. Don t press as hard on the Payon to make them less intense. We remember that things in the background are not as bright. 10 GEORGIA O KEEFFE Ages 5 7 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

THE SKY [ 5 minutes ] 1. Watch while I show you how to color the sky: Remove the Payon from its cardboard tube. Start at the top of the paper and press hard, using the side of the Payon. Using long strokes, color across the page. Remember to put it back in the sleeve. 2. If you choose, you may add another color to your sky. (DEMONSTRATE PUTTING ANOTHER COLOR ON TOP OF THE FIRST, USING THE SAME TECHNIQUE) 3. The sky should be darkest at the top of the page. THE OUTLINE [ 3 minutes ] Using the black crayon, go over the pencil lines, separating the hills from each other and the sky. Press hard to make a heavy black line. THE WATER [ 5 minutes ] Have the students pack up and close the Payons before they begin painting with the water. 1. Watch as we magically turn our bright crayon picture into a beautiful watercolor painting! 2. I will dip the tip of my brush into the water and gently tap it to get rid of drips. 3. Hold the brush the way an artist does. (DEMONSTRATE AND CHECK THE CHILDREN) We hold it like we do a pencil, but further back on the handle. Your arm needs to be higher than the bristles when you paint. Our painting today will be like sweeping the floor with a broom - long sweeping strokes. 4. Start at the top of the paper with the sky. Work down quickly before the water dries. Use only long horizontal strokes. 5. Dip the brush again when you begin to run out of water. 6. When you get to the hills, do each hill separately, being careful not to mix the colors. Your black crayon lines act like a dam to keep the water and colors separate and bright. 7. You should be careful not to use too much water. There should not be puddles or runs. CLEAN THE BRUSH Dip it into the water and dry it gently to a point on the paper towel. MOUNTING THE ARTIST PROFILE SLIP [ 2 minutes ] (Profile slips for each artist are provided. They give a brief description of the artist, the technique, and the media used in the art activity. They should be mounted to the back of each art project after it is completed.) 1. Write your name on the front of the artist profile slip. 2. Using glue, mount the profile slip on the back of your artwork. 3. Encourage students to discuss their artwork with others using this artist slip of information. 11 GEORGIA O KEEFFE Ages 5 7 MeetTheMasters Online Edition

CONCLUSION Look at the beautiful landscape(s) you have created! I can just picture Georgia O Keeffe hiking over your hills and setting up her easel to paint. Would you like to hike and paint with Georgia O Keeffe? THIS CONCLUDES THE GEORGIA O KEEFFE UNIT. 12 GEORGIA O KEEFFE Ages 5 7 MeetTheMasters Online Edition
