1 Kings Point Art League January/February, 2019 President s Message: Where did the year go? What did I accomplish? Do I have any regrets? Sometimes reflection is good and sometimes it can bring back some painful memories. I gave up on making New Year s Resolutions a long time ago. I found by the middle of January, I had already failed and I don t like to feel that way. Instead, I try to have Goals. Even if I m not successful, I learn something along the way. This year s Goals are: Be a better listener, read more, pay it forward with kind actions, smile more, worry less, and be thankful every day for all the blessings we share. These are lofty goals but you notice, there isn t one word about losing weight or art and yet, if I do some of the goals, I m sure that it will also affect my health and creative spirit. May 2019 be a year of accomplishment. May you find something that inspires you. May you share your joy of discovery with kind words and deeds. May you all be blessed with good health and comfort. February 22: Membership Meeting at 1:00 in the Ripple Room, followed by Silent Auction in the Art Room KPAL Open Studio in the Art Room Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9:00 am to 11:30 am. Join in the fun of painting with fellow artists. Graphic Arts Open Studio Thursday Mornings 9:00 am - Noon FREE This is an open studio for anyone that enjoys working in the graphic arts. Lynn offers help and advice to artists as needed. Or they can work on their art without help. Monthly Art Display in the Art Room On the First Saturday of each month, all are invited to bring their paintings to be hung around the Art Room for the current month. Please bring them to the Art Room after 8:00 am and no later than 9:00 am. Hanging Dates are January 5 and February 2 Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. 4 KINGSPOINT ART LEAGUE WORKSHOPS On Saturday, January 12 at 9:30-12:00, Sue Lynn Cotton will hold a Watercolor Workshop for $25. Sue Lynn worked as a commercial artist, book designer, and illustrator in Dallas for many years before relocating to Florida 16 years ago. As a well-known local watercolor teacher, she teaches classes year round at Keeton s and her home studio. Students learn to paint realism using a limited palette for unified color in the painting while mixing colors directly on the paper. Her paintings have been published in magazines and books and are in collections around the world. She has also illustrated over 35 children s books. Watercolor Palette Lemon Yellow (no nickel titanium), Sennelier Quinacridone Gold or New Gamboge, Permanent Rose or D.S.Quinacridone Rose (other reds, crimsons or rose madders will not work), Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo Blue (gs), Indigo optional: Burnt Sienna, Opera Rose, Cobalt Blue or Manganese Blue #6, #8, #10, #12 rounds (Princeton Velvetouch Long Round or Loew-Cornell 7020), Princeton Neptune Quill Brush is excellent for a large wash that covers quickly with a point for details, 3/4 or 1 flat brush (Escoda Versatil is terrific!) Princeton Elite Stroke brush is also a great flat wash brush), Large flat brush or makeup brush for wetting paper, a small bristle brush (1/4 flat) for scrubbing, Natural sponge, great for scrubbing out or lifting. Paper Arches 140# Cold Press Watercolor Paper (11 x 14.5 sheet) I will have this for $1.50 Pencil & Notepad or clipboard, Kneaded Eraser or Moo Eraser (other erasers should be used on watercolor paper), Paper Towels (softer ones like Viva are better), Bring old washcloth for blotting brush for water control 2 Water Containers (margarine containers or larger), Masking Tape (no colors, please. Cheap stuff is fine), Paper support, 1/4 sheet size of non-porous board such as Cor-Plast. I will have these for $3. Sign up in the Art room at the bulletin board, pay by check made out to the artist, Sue Lynn Cotton -$25, THEN take a pattern. Trace the pattern onto paper before the workshop. On Saturday, February 9, 2019, 9:30 to 12:30, Peg Lombardi will be doing a Watercolor on Yupo workshop for $25. She will provide the Yupo paper for several paintings as well as some miscellaneous tools and supplies for mixed media painting. The participants will need to provide the following: 9 tubes of watercolor paint in the following colors: Cobalt teal Qor, Opera Rose Winsor Newton, Cadmium Red Lt. Daniel Smith, Gamboge M. Graham, Lemon Yellow Daniel Smith, Cadmium Orange M. Graham, Bright Green American Journey, Ultramarine Blue L Aqurelle, Cobalt Violet M. Graham. NO EARTH TONES! Also, 2 small spray bottles 1 for water and 1 for alcohol, Alcohol either 70 or 90 percent (enough to fill a small spray bottle), brushes 2 Skyflo wash brush, 1 flat brush, #8 round, dagger brush, and any other favorite larger brushes, Viva paper towels, package of tissues, favorite rubber stamps, (textures, shapes, objects, etc.), palette, an apron or smock, old clothes will work, too.
