2 Supplies Grapes pes & Checker ered ed Cloth Materials all available from Masonite panel (8 x 10 ) and frame of choice Genesis Artist Colors: Burnt Umber, Genesis Yellow, Mars or Carbon Black, Phthalo Blue 01, Quinacridone Crimson, Raw Sienna, Titanium White DecoArt Americana Acrylics: Dove Gray Royal & Langnickel Signature Brushes by Kingslan & Gibilisco Nos. 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 filbert (Series FF), Nos. 0 and 1 mop (Series MOP); Majestic No. 3/0 Detail Brush (Series 4125), No. 10/0 liner (Series 4595); Sponge Roller Brush Genesis Thinning Medium, Glazing Gel, Drying Gun SPC, Inc. Final Coat Varnish, Low Gloss Glass palette Miscellaneous: tracing paper, transfer paper, stylus, kneaded eraser, oven Preparation Note: Follow all manufacturers label instructions for proper product usage. Use acrylic paint in the preparation steps only. Use Genesis colors for the mixtures and in the painting steps. Roll 2 or 3 coats of Dove Gray acrylic onto the panel. Leave the surface slightly rough. The surface needs to have a small amount of tooth for the Genesis colors to adhere. Transfer pattern to panel. Mixtures Note: Refer to the Color Mixture Chart when mixing colors. Create the value scales by first matching the hue (color), then the value (light or dark), then finally the intensity (amount of pure pigment). Mix the value marked * first. Tablecloth Light: Medium value + Titanium White + a small amount of Raw Sienna Medium: Titanium White + Black + Raw Sienna* Dark: Medium value + Black Low Dark: Dark value + Black Grapes and Leaf Light: Medium value + Titanium White + a touch of Genesis Yellow Medium: Genesis Yellow + Black + Titanium White* Dark: Medium value + Black Low Dark: Dark value + Black Background and Table Light: Medium value + Titanium White + Raw Sienna Medium: Burnt Umber + Quinacridone Crimson Dark: Medium value + Burnt Umber + Black Painting First identify the light source it is coming from the upper right slightly in front. Each object in the still life can be classified as a form. The proper use of value creates the form. If an object can be viewed as a form, it is very easy to paint because we paint the effect of light on forms not the objects. Each grape is a sphere shape. The wine glass bowl is a half of a sphere. The leaf is flat plane similar to a cube. The cloth is a combination cube (the flat areas), a cylinder (the rolls within the cloth) and a cone (the roll on the right side). The table is also a cube. Refer to the Value Placement Diagram for location of the values. Painting: Stage 1 (see photo) Develop the form of each object Use the No. 4 filbert to place the Medium value on each of the grapes according to the Value Placement Diagram. Next apply the Dark value. Blend the two values together by blending with the brush half on the medium value and half on the Dark value. Next, use the No. 4 filbert to apply the Light value and blend into the Medium value. In the same manner, use the No. 8 filbert to apply values to the leaf. Use the No. 2 filbert to base the stems with Medium value. Place the Light value just in from the right outside edge. Shade the left side with the Dark value. Blend values together slightly. Use the No. 6 filbert to add the violet values (Quinacridone Crimson) to the grapes. Base the leaf with the Medium value using the No. 8 filbert. Use the No. 4 filbert to apply the Dark value into Grapes & Checkered Cloth - Page 2

3 this wet basecoat where indicated. Blend the two values together, positioning the brush half on the medium value and half on the dark value. Add the Low Dark value as diagrammed. Blend the Low Dark and Dark values together. Use the No. 2 filbert to apply the Light value and blend into the Medium value. Use the No. 12 filbert to place the Medium value on the background according to the Value Placement Diagram. Next apply the Dark value. Blend the two values together by blending with the brush half on the medium value and half on the Dark value. Next, use the No. 12 filbert to apply the Light value and blend into the Medium value. Clean up edges with a clean brush that has been dipped into Thinning Medium. Blot the brush and clean up messy edges. Clean up fingerprints with a kneaded eraser. The first stage must be completely dry before continuing. To dry Genesis colors, heat-set with a Drying Gun for 3-5 minutes or dry in your home oven for 5 minutes at 265-degrees. Painting: Stage 3 Shine and shadows Place the shine in the center of the originally developed light area using a Warm White mix of Titanium White + Genesis Yellow. Add pass through light in the lower left of each grape with Blue Tint. With a 10/0 liner, add a Warm White line of the edge of each section of the cloth. Add a Black cast shadow from the wine glass onto the tablecloth. Add a Black cast shadow from the tablecloth onto the table. Refer to photo of finished piece for placement. Finishing Dry (heat-set) the painting. Varnish surface with Final Coat, following the manufacturer s instructions. When dry, frame as desired. Painting: Stage 2 Add details Use the No. 2 filbert with Quinacridone Crimson to create the stripes on the cloth. Thin the paint slightly with Thinning Medium. Draw the stripes following the outside edge cloth. Dry these stripes and add stripes that form a right angle to the first set of stripes. Use the No. 4 filbert with a mixture of Black + Quinacridone Crimson to apply veins to the leaf. Start at the stem of the leaf and pull toward the tip. Add side veins in the same manner, setting the brush down in the center and pulling toward the outside edge of the leaf. If the veins appear too prominent, mop using the No. 1 mop. The second stage must be dry in order to continue to the final stage. Transfer the wine glass. With #4 filbert, add a Warm White shine (Titanium White plus a very small amount of Genesis Yellow) to the front of the glass and the stem. Add Blue Tint (Phthalo Blue 01 + Titanium White) in the lower right of the wine glass bowl and the stem. With a 10/0 liner, add a line of Warm White horizontally across the lip of the wine glass and on the foot of the stem. With Warm White add a few dry brush shines on the glass bowl.
