You will find that the mixes for the hue are given first. This is followed by a colour that will raise or lower the value. Once the value and colour are mixed, the next addition usually is meant to either brighten or dull the colour. Finally, a colour may need to be mixed into the pile that will adjust the temperature. 3 Stage One Sepia/Bistre Underpainting Review sepia underpainting segment on the video as this is your best reference. It will help train your eye. Start with a white, primed canvas. Thin a mixture of BU + a small amount of Black with Paint Thinner. It should be thin enough that you can draw on the canvas. Paint in the dark sections of the canvas such as the lower left of the dress, the dark upright of the step and shadow work. If a section becomes too dark, load a brush with Paint Thinner and scrub out the light sections. Wash the flesh sections in with a very light value. This is the lightest section of the entire piece. Darken the outside edges of the arms and each finger and palm. Add a dark value in the eye sockets, under the chin, and nostril opening. Add a darker value to define the cheek/nose area. The painting must be dry prior to moving to the next stage. Stage Two: Color Wash Wash each object with the colors listed. This is a transparent layer so as to begin to bring the objects to their local color. Thin each color with paint thinner so that the sepia underpainting glows through. Low Dk Wash the upright girl s skirt with Blue (Cobalt, Phthalo or Ultramarine) Wash the upright girl s pinafore and foreground with RS Wash the flesh tones with Flesh 08 or RS + TW + R Wash the upright girl s hair and reclining girl s clothes with Black Wash the backround with Y + Blk Wash the reclining girl s hair with RS

4 Face, Hand and Feet Block in the face, arms and feet with the flesh tones without blending as shown on the provided step-by-step photos.use a soft brush to create a smooth appearance. Block out the sepia tones underneath. Ignore details such as the eyes, mouth, nostrils, etc. Blend the values together slightly. While blending, keep the brush half on one value and half on the other value. Blend using virtually no pressure. Just melt the sections together. All sections will be reinforced when dry. 6 Eyes Step-by-step Nose Step-by-step 1. Base iris with UB in an elliptical shape. Add pupil with black. Fill in the white of the eye with light flesh. 1. Base nostril and nose wings with dark flesh. 2. Add tear ducts with dark flesh. Add lash ledge with dark flesh leaving a space for the light ledge. Add light value on top of ledge section. 2. Place dark below the nose as a shadow and a slight shadow on the left side. 3. Add lash line with black. Shade both corners of the eyes with black. Add black around the outside of the iris.add highlight in upper right with light flesh. Add a pass through in the lower left using the same. 3. To create the underside of the nose, shade with medium flesh + R.. 4. Add shading around eye with dark flesh including fold line. 5. Add brow with BU. Add fold under eye with dark flesh. 4. Add highlight on nose with light flesh.

7 Mouth Step-by-step 1. Base lips with Medium + R. 2. Add a darker red between the lips. Add light to the bottom lip. 3. Repaint face and neck with flesh tones to make more solid following the initial placement.

8 Clothing Shirt: Base in the white shirts with TW + a small amount of orange. Shade with TW + Black. Blue Skirt: Base in with UB + BU + TW. Add lights with TW + orange (shirt base coat color). Add shading with Black. Pinafore: Base in with RS. Add lights with TW + Blk (light grey). Add shading with BU.

9 Black Pinafore & Skirt: Base in with Black. Add lights with TW + orange (shirt base coat color). Add shading with Black. Stage Two Hands & Feet Repeat steps from before to create stronger lights and darks. Background Block dark green on the upper left, mid value green in the center of the composition and lighter green in the upper right. Add foilage with light greens to resemble light, vague leaves. Add distinct leaves on top. Base foreground with RS + Green. Highlight with Blue Tint (UB + TW). Accent with RS. Add leaves on the foreground with green values. These are distinct. Create scene of lake and trees by basecoating the lake and sky with Blue Tint. Add mountain with mid-value gray. Pull trees and leaves over the scene with dark green.

10 Hair Base coat dark hair with BU + Black. Highlight with TW + UB. Shade with Blk. Base light hair with RS + TW + Orange. Add dark values BS or BU + R. Add highlight with WW. Strengthen areas on face by adding stronger lights and darks, blush tones and ear. Add red ribbon with R, Shade with R + Black. Highlight with Blue Tint. Stage Three Strengthen areas on face by adding stronger lights and darks, blush tones and ear. Add highlights of Blue Tint and Warm White add stronger dark areas with Black. Add red trim with R.

11 Nuts Add nuts with TW + Y + UB. Shade with dark green (Black + Y)and highlight with WW in the upper left. Add one with Orange. Shadow Work Add shadows with Black + BU. Reference overall photo on cover or below for placement. Analyze Your Painting Is the right side of the face darker than the left? If not, glaze the flesh with BU + QC Is the left side light enough? If not, add highlights on the right side of the face and gown with TW + Y. Are there any dull sections? In the face, add pink tones to alleviate dullness. Are there harsh violet tones in the skin? Glaze with RS in order to neutralize. Varnish Varnish with Final Coat Varnish building up several coats to give the painting an Old World sheen.

12 Here are the steps used to create a leaf/green palette consisting of mixes: Step One: Mix a basic palette with a value scale a gray 2-8 or lay out the Genesis Values of Gray 2-8 (Mix on Wingate or disposable palette - not on the final storage palette. Transfer all mixes at the end of the mixing process so as to keep it neat and compact) Add Genesis Yellow to each gray pile of paint to create Basic Green. Step Two: Divide each Basic Green pile into 3 or 4 additional piles. In other words, across your palette you will have 4 (or 5) identical values scales of the scale you just made. Step Three: In the second value scale of Basic Green, add UB each pile of paint to create Cool Green To create an optional cool scale, add Phthalo Blue 01 to the third value scale of Basic Green. Step Four: In the third value scale of Basic Green, add Y to each value 5-8 and BU to each value 2-4 to create the Warm Green Step Five: In the fourth value scale of Basic Green, add RS to each value 5-8, BU and QC to each value 2-4 to create Neutral Green Step Six: Place all of these value scales onto a large glass palette with a lid or in aluminum tins with lid.
