This lesson will take 2-4 hours to complete depending upon whether you re an absolute beginner or a more experienced student. Also available on DVD. A most enchanting painting loved worldwide by landscapes students. The blues and greens contrast so nicely giving the impression of many brilliant colors in the woods. Using a nearly full palette, this exceptional painting can be adapted to any size canvas. PAINTING SUPPLIES Paints Sap Green (SG) Alizarin Crimson (AC) Burnt Umber (BU) Burnt Sienna (BS) Ivory Black (IB) Prussian Blue (PB) Orange (OR) Titanium White (TW) Yellow Ochre (YO) Indian Yellow (IY) Cad Yellow (CY) Paynes Gray (PG) Pthalo Blue (PTB) Cad Red Light (BR) Brushes 2 1/2 Landscape 1 Landscape #2 Script Liner #3 Fan Brush #6 Fan #4 Flat Bristle #5 Palette knife #10 Palette Knife Hake Blender Sponge Brush (1-2 ) 1 Filbert or Oval Mop Medium Medium White (MW) Black Gesso Medium Clear (MC) Canvas 18 x24 although any size can be used. Miscellaneous: Paper Towels, Baby Wipes, Baby Oil (or Odorless thinner), Container & Cleaning Screen for oil, Beater rack and waste receptacle, table top easel, paper palette.

4 P R Page 2 E P A R A T IO N Our Basic Supplies. Paint the entire canvas with 2 coats of Black Gesso. Dry canvas between coats using a hair dryer. Check to ensure your easel and canvas are level. Lightly wipe off excess MC on canvas. Paint the entire canvas with a coat of PB Lighten background Doing X Stroke, blend TW from center outwards. Blend colors from bright center to outermost edges. 5 Page 3 Paint Falls w/#3 fan w/ptb & TW mix, single stroke. Add 2nd stroke to complete waterfall width. Rapidly brush a lighter mix over top of water for sun.? At Fall s bottom, fill up area with water mix for splash. Blend splash out as though it was a cloud. You can make the splash as big and full as you d like. Bring the moving water out of Fall s splash. Create a 2-fork set of cascading water.. A Cascade is like a mini, mini waterfall. Paint it same.

6 Page 4 M ID D L E G R O U N D Check to make sure Falls are believable.. Add a 2nd set of cascades. Add a little splash at bottom of all cascades. Keep small. Add a short wide waterfall with lower cascades. Double load #2 bristle flat with 2-tone brown for rocks Add rocks throughout falls, one s transparent in water.. Add splash around new rocks just added.. For real splashing splashes blend all of the foam.. Have another tree and paint island on opposite side.

7 Page 5 Mix SG, PB with IY, YO, CY, BR for different greens. Add rocks throughout the waterfall. Add as few or as many rocks as you d like. We ll have 3 rows of trees. No sky. Tap filbert lightly. Begin to left of falls with TW/PTB mix using filbert. Group the blue trees so a natural progression is seen. Don t forget to go above the waterfall, but not on it. Surround the light color, with darker, bluer trees. Move to green trees after the medium blue trees painted.

8 Page 6 F O R E G R O U N D I painted the right side and then the left. Overhang.. You ll get a lot of practice painting these filbert trees. Add small tree trunks and stems from bushes. Add bushes strokes around all rocks to set them in. Add more tree trunks and stems.. Cover the forward rocks with a darker highlight. Then brighten up rocks with 2nd lighter highlight. Check: Highlights? Details? Water? Add small bushes around forward rocks.

9 Page 7 F IN A L D E T A IL S Add bushes on both forward side of bottom canvas. Add blue, red shrubbery. With #3 fan add BU tree. Very lightly, highlight the tree trunk with #10 knife.
